I looked back at my original comment on this one, and now three years later that sentiment about owning one piece is still very true. I remembered seeing it in the pictures from Noah's exhibit he did a year ago here. This has been mentioned before, but this is one of those instances in which photography makes the piece. Grouped with others in a white box, it doesn't seem like much, but on a dark background, with the warm glow of an incandescent light- this piece really comes alive for me.

Thank you all for sticking with me the last 17 weeks and allowing me to share some of my thoughts with you. First let me start with the execution of it, nothing was added or subtracted to create this. The finished art material exists exactly like it was before just slightly shifted. A more philosophical lesson here is that art is inside of everything and it is just waiting for an artist to bring it out. Also, doing it inside the natural frame- only a mature artist would see that and use it. The item however that I spend so much time thinking about is the actual fate of it. Here is a piece that was meant to be left behind for others to discover, but at the same time it was created on something that was portable either by purchased or ultimately removed for destruction. Even today I wonder: Is it still sitting there? Did it get sent for scrap? Was it an invitation for more additions, did the image get obliterated by profession of love or profanity? Did a local Skull-A-Day fan venture forth and carry it away back home for display? This is one that I would really like an update on if at all possible.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. There is no reason why something like this shouldn't exist on the market for sale it is brilliant in its design and execution.

I have always wondered about the history of this object. How did Noah come to aquire it? Was it personal, family, an estate sale? In order to understand a deeper meaning that may exist with the piece I want to know more about it. I am afraid however, that once given the background more questions may surface and I may end up reading more into it then really is intended. So I leave you with this simple thought. By this point in the project one could say Noah was committed to it, a marriage of sorts and every day for better or for worse we got to see his relationship with skulls and the bond that they formed during the project.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. As Noah talked about in his post here, I was one of those who received that email announcing the project. I did a little digging and was able to pull that email out of my Skull-A-Day archives to share with you.

While this piece was created a couple of years after this happened, it is hard to think about this skull without putting it into that historical context. Besides, announcing that audio tapes are dead, this piece is representative for being the first in a series of what can be thematically grouped as “dead media” that was skullified throughout the original project year. From computer diskettes, to a reel to reel machine, to a TV, Noah explored the accumulation of objects that our society no longer sees as useful. It is powerful to think about how the objects we use everyday maybe the items that define our current existence one-thousand years from now, are looked to as junk. Will our future selves laugh at our objects and call us primitive, or will they see us as geniuses that helped move human culture to its next evolutionary level. For now however, these objects will survive as art.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. Harvey says:

It was almost inevitable that this one would show up. However, most of you were probably guessing that this would be #1 not #5. Since this one now has taken on a life of its own, let me share with you a more humble beginning.

As the original project started its second month, Noah and I developed a sort of rapport I would try to encourage him with my commentary, and he would sometimes have a comment on my commentary only encouraging me further. I fell in love with the idea of using this image as wrapping paper and I was thinking about sending Noah a little present wrapped in it. (see the original comments here) I printed out #32 large enough for the purpose of wrapping paper and tacked it to a bulletin board until I would be ready to send it.

On July 8, 2007 I was sitting at my computer staring at the bulletin board, and was struck by the proverbial lightning. The #32 that I printed out a couple of days earlier was the same size as my head. I cut it out punched a couple of holes and it worked perfectly as a mask. “C” was ready to go public, I took a couple of pictures and sent them off.

The next day Noah posted this on Skull-A-Day. It was the green light that singled to me “lets keep this going” and so it did for the rest of the year. I know making a skull a day was hard, but needing to come up with a comment a day was not so easy either. Sadly I didn't earn my 365 merit badge, but I gave it a good effort.

Now you ask: Whatever happened to Citizen Agent’s original mask? The answer: It became part of the #366 installation and I would guess it is now part of the Skull-A-Day archives, maybe if I am lucky it is framed hanging on a wall in a Skull-A-Day Cafe.

And now you know -- the rest of the story- Gooooooood Day!

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. This is one however that I feel is often overlooked, perhaps it is because it was too early in the year or maybe the material is just too mundane to invoke any passion. I however, find this piece not only brilliantly thought out, but extremely well executed. In this piece, Noah crossed the threshold of getting into more traditional sculpture. Before this point, all of the pieces had either been cut or arranged, and the 3-D work he did was building upon what was already there. This piece was Noah's first attempt at a 3-D skull “ex nihilo” for the project, and because of that this piece is one that comes to mind quickly when I think about the great art that was produced during the original Skull-A-Day. If the employees hadn’t been so disgruntled I would have attempted to do something like this in solidarity with those who were about to lose their jobs. It was sad to see that this chain store who chased out the independents a few years ago now were being chased away by the internet leaving nothing in the community.

This piece however, is a great example of how Skull-A-Day shifted that year. At first it all rested on Noah to finish the project, but as it grew that year, by the end it became much of a community effort to see this project succeed. Noah still did all the skulls, but there was this cheer-leading effect that seemed to emerge and much of the second half included skulls that came about because of others’ involvement. I guess one could say that what you need in order to have a successful 365 project is the support of friends that will inspire and teach you when your bucket list is empty.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. This has stood out in my mind because it is an amazing example of industrial design. The concept is simple, and the design intricate, but what really makes this work for me is the functionality of it. It really works as one imagines it should. Up to this point in my list I have focused on many readymades in the project that Noah was raising the status of them from the mundane into works of art. In this piece there is a great shift in that it represents turning art into the everyday object. This piece has had a lasting impression with me in that almost every time I need to turn something in with a paper clip attached, I secretly wish I had these to use. I am surprised that these have yet to be picked up by one of those stationary stores and sent these into production for sale.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. Who knows maybe some enterprising reader went out and found this after you posted it and you will find it posted for sale someday. It has been mentioned before that the job of an artist is to see the potential in a form and allow that potential to come out. I admire that you were able to give birth to this just by casually walking by and seeing the potential. I also like that this was non-destructive graffiti, in that at anytime it could be undone and returned to its original state. Some thing I have always wondered about, what were the actions that you ended up with the materials to do this? After your meeting did you tell them you were having an art emergency and needed, a piece of construction paper, scissors, and tape stat?

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. This is a piece that I felt never got the full recognition it deserved. Seeing this piece always reminds me of how when I was a child I was told how important it was to cut these up before we threw them away. I remembering being told about the animals that would get caught in them and die if we didn’t do it. This piece serves as a fitting commentary on that idea. This is another piece that falls into that wonderful category of what I see as readymades. The object remains the same, just changed in its appearance. The ability to do this is something that was repeated in much of the original 365.25 and it is something that I continue to admire in Noah’s work. On a side note speaking of trash in the ocean, I just want to share this fascinating story that I think about often.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. When I first saw this piece, I was fooled into thinking that this was a photoshop job of a real mountain. After enlarging the picture I then realized what an extraordinary piece this was. If I remember correctly each skull Noah did back in 1.0 was actually started and completed in the same day. The Skullmaster must have rose with the sun in order to finish this while there was still daylight to take the picture. To this day I am still curious about the size of the piece, I know the dimensions, but I just can't imagine what it would look like say next to a gallon of milk. To this day, I still really enjoy the mirror effect for the water, how can something so smooth cause such a ripple effect.

In thinking about this piece today I was reminded of the early 20th century climber, George Mallory, who’s body was recover 75 years later on Mount Everest. This piece would make a fitting tribute to all those who push the limits of their human existence for eternal recognition.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Eames says:

I am a one trick pony when it comes to comments on this one, I wrote almost the exact same comment today as I did almost 3 years ago and now I have that song stuck in my head. When I saw this piece, sitting where the photo was taken, I immediately thought of a tombstone. I even went so far as to send in a roughly edited photo of it that was featured here. I don't know what type of chairs your parents have, but the shape of this one accents the skull design so perfectly. Another reason why this one has stood out in my mind for so long is because of your conversion of a functioning everyday object into art that is probably still functioning in its original purpose. Once again I am reminded of the mid-20th Century art movements in which lines were tested taking art off the gallery walls and finding it in everyday usable objects.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. One could have easily taken the easy way out and just formed bends in the pipes, but you went beyond and used connectors to achieve your features. Also the use of a die to cut threads instead of soldering pieces is also something else that I admire about the piece. I have always liked the idea of constructing this into a fully functioning piece, however studying it, it would be almost impossible unless you add some additional valves to keep sections from mixing or make it a single temp water feature. I wonder what having this installed would do for the potential resale value of a house, maybe a drinking fountain at the Mütter Museum would be a better place to install a food safe version of your work.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. I let the psychologist handle that that one for me. I have always been impressed by this one by the fact that you were working with a random assortment of bricks and were able to come up with something so perfect. I remember after this one was posted I explored the custom set creator tool over at Lego.com. Yes, I could be nice and link you right to it, but today is a day of discovery so I will let you go and find #366 yourself. Here is a good place to start.

What has always stood out in my mind about this piece was the creative spark that made it happen. These are objects in their natural state simply arranged with a minor modification . Some may consider this piece’s style to be “Surreal”, “Avant-garde”, or even dare to suggest “Pop”. Personally, this piece reminds me specifically of Marcel Duchamp’s collection of Readymades. In it, I admire Noah’s ability to look at the disks in their natural state and give birth to what we see here. This piece, in my mind, truly helped earn him the title of “ The Skullmaster.”

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. What makes this one of my favorites, is partially the subject matter and partially the material used in making it. First, with Lincoln, how can one not immediately think of a skull because of the manner in which he was assassinated. Second, the tecnical achievement of this piece is amazing, I really enjoyed that this piece was actually built using a full spectrum of the diversity of pieces in the set rather than just having the main pieces arranged into a skull form.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. It seems my favorite list is not starting out much better, as I have found yet another I missed. One of the things I remembered most about this one was how a specific moment in time was captured in this picture with the birds circling overhead. It reminded me that we are also just a moment in time, and that no matter how we try to repeat something it can never be the same. In doing “C-Rations” each week I discovered the large number of pictures I take just to get that one “good” shot. I can imagine how the same was true for this image. The birds, being traditionally tied with death in folklore, work beautifully with the skull because it looks like an unspoken message is being sent altering them to the location of the of the departed.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o.
