Dia de la Abby: #86 Dia de los Muertos Box

Inspired by Valentine's Day and Dia de los Muertos, I took a heart shaped box and transformed it into a dark Valentine box. I covered the box with tissue paper, to give it a faux leather look. I painted a sugar skull, flowers, and leaves on the box, as a way of personalizing it. This box would be great to contain mementos, gifts, treats, or a shrine. Head to my blog to learn how to do the faux leather tissue paper treatment and see photos of the anatomical heart box. For the artwork, check out the Sugar Skulls and Marigolds Sneakers Tutorial. To see what else I'm creating, follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

A.O.M. D.O.D. Skulls

Kim DiLoreto from Medford Lakes, NJ is obviously a fan of skulls(and our site, thanks), BUUUT she also contributes to the Art-O-Mat world of vending machine dispensed art. These Day of the Dead skull paintings are made for the machines, and whoever is lucky enough to enjoy them. She was nice enough to include an awesome pic featuring a multitude of these blockheads so that we could enjoy seeing all of them. Thanks for sharing these with us, Kim!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.13

Today's simulacra are really leaving their mark....

This paintball splash skull was shot by Riki from Toulouse, France....

...and this perky chap was snagged by Job.

I guess some skulls make their presence a little more known that others. Have you captured your own sneaky skull simulacra? If so then be sure to submit it to us. We be as thankful as we are to Riki and Job. Thank you!

Wood Burned Skull Jewelry Box

Louis Cordova said, "This was my first time at wood burning. Thought it came out good, so I made it into a jewelry box."

My favorite thing about wood burned pieces of art, is the scent. There is something lovely about using a hot metal to burn wood into designs. If Louis hadn't mentioned it, I would have never known this was his 1st attempt at wood burning. I'm glad he was pleased with his work and turned his skull creation into a practical jewelry box.

Boxy Skulls

Here are a couple of skulls that answer the old quest: “What is black and white and boxy allover?”

Nathan Fuja created this skull with books and light

Simulacra hunter Tyrone Hernandez from Kunkletown PA showed off an original screen print. He said: “The medium is a very dirty window screen and a very clean finger.

Pixeled C says:

Nathan: I tried to go CSI, and find out what is on the front of the books, but alas I don't have the technology they have. Are the books part of the significance? Tyrone: After many excellect simulacra, we are glad to feature an original piece by you, was is the story about its final fate? Thank you both for submitting these wonderful pieces for us to share.

Dia de la Abby #54 - Wooden Skulls

This piece is inspired by wanting to improve my carving skills using my Dremel.

Painted

Non-painted

Sawdust from hours of carving

This project took a lot longer than anticipated. Cheap wood equals inconsistent wood and therefor harder to carve and keep smooth. It's pretty good for my first try at carving with a Dremel. I used engraving bits to carve the details. I used a drill bit and a large engraving bit to carve the open areas. I used watered down acrylic paint to make the white and black color washes. All the carving created an impressive amount of sawdust, so I made a little skull with that before cleaning it up. I plan on storing my Beaded Skull Broach in it.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  FacebookGoogle+ and/or Twitter..

Skull Trinket Box

Erica R. writes to us, "I've always had a fascination with Mexican art, and Day of the Dead art in particular. Occasionally, I'll paint skully things and sell them on my Etsy shop. This picture is of one of my trinket boxes that sold at the end of last year, and I just love the way it turned out."

Nicely done, Erica! It's too bad that I don't have any skull trinkets to keep in such a box, just the teeth of my enemies. Thanks for sharing.

The "Countdown To Halloween" has only 9 days left. Don't get caught unaware.....

Tuesdays With Tatman #6

These two blokes are here today to represent the end result of a lifetime of smoking. Whether it be some kind of cancer or a complication of being ill...SMOKING KILLS! It's not my place to tell you to stop. Heck, it's not even my place to tell you not to start, but I can tell you the place you'll end up if you don't quit. If you're lucky MAYBE your skull will get to enjoy a last smoke like these fellows, but I DOUBT IT.

Since I know that we have some young readers out there, let this picture be a sign to you. If this looks gross; it's because it is. To those who do smoke, just think of how much better you'll breathe, how much better your food will taste, and how much better your clothes will smell after you quit.

Each Tuesday in the 3.0 year will bring a new Tuesday With Tatman. As a tribute to the Skull Master's astounding feat let's all get creative and try something new(and hopefully skull related).
