Skull Cake
Brian, Lindsey, and Loren Miller created this skull cake. I've been in the mood for lots of sweets. I'm sure this colorful icing rich cake would satisfy that craving. It would be perfect for a Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Skull Portraits
Marcus Wemyss, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, painted these Day of the Dead skull portraits. They are oil on canvas and were painted in 2012. I love these portraits, which capture traditional Dia de los Muertos skull makeup. We often get submissions of skull makeup, which are all great. I don't often seen skull portraits, so these really caught my eye. To see more of Marcus Wemyss' work, check out his website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Sugar Skull Lamp Shade
Bat Fastard is back with us, to show a three sided sugar skull lamp shade that he created. Lamp shades are often boring and plain. This one is a refreshing take on a staple houseware need. I'd love to see if the skulls are cast onto the walls at night.

Felt Sugar Skull
Lydia Leigh from Sheffield, UK, created this felt sugar skull. I love seeing hand made toys and soft sculptures like this. I've been sewing for a few decades, but sadly I'm terrible with soft toys. There is no indicator of scale for this skull. I'm hoping it's human sized, as that would make for amusing photos...and a lovely pillow.

Super Skull Clock Saturday
These killer skull clocks are from Bat Fastard of the U.K. He's back from the past with a new set of painted skulls. Never mind the fact that time doesn't really exist, just appreciate the fact that you are in the here and now enjoying some cool looking cranial chronometers. Thanks for making some "time" for us with your submission, Bat Fastard!

Roller Girl Skull
Julie Linebarier Reilly's 8 year old daughter "Tiny CrusHer", plays Jr roller derby with Florida Junior Roller Girls. She wore this skull makeup for one of her games. If I was in roller derby (I can't skate though), this would be intimidating...or just really distracting. Glad to see young girls getting into a rough sport like this. By the group photo on their Facebook page, it looks like they have a blast!

Music Video Skulls
Lukasz Pytlik, from Poland, created this Dia de los Muertos inspired music video. It was for the Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros music video contest. I love the use of skull masks to unify the characters. You can see the video below the still photos.

Dia de la Abby: #86 Dia de los Muertos Box
Inspired by Valentine's Day and Dia de los Muertos, I took a heart shaped box and transformed it into a dark Valentine box. I covered the box with tissue paper, to give it a faux leather look. I painted a sugar skull, flowers, and leaves on the box, as a way of personalizing it. This box would be great to contain mementos, gifts, treats, or a shrine. Head to my blog to learn how to do the faux leather tissue paper treatment and see photos of the anatomical heart box. For the artwork, check out the Sugar Skulls and Marigolds Sneakers Tutorial. Sugar Skull Makeup
Alicia Troiani created this sugar skull makeup. This is another great interpretation of the sugar skull motif in makeup form. Painting a face as a sugar skull is commonly done during Dia de los Muertos and recently Halloween celebrations. I love that Alicia included a flower headband and shawl into her costume. That really helps bring together the costume of La Calavera Catrina.

Dia de los Muertos Couple
Will Rawlings and his wife Christie, from Bossier City, LA, were "skulled out for Halloween". Christie did the makeup. I love seeing skull loving couples. Especially in skull makeup. Thanks for submitting these!

A.O.M. D.O.D. Skulls
Kim DiLoreto from Medford Lakes, NJ is obviously a fan of skulls(and our site, thanks), BUUUT she also contributes to the Art-O-Mat world of vending machine dispensed art. These Day of the Dead skull paintings are made for the machines, and whoever is lucky enough to enjoy them. She was nice enough to include an awesome pic featuring a multitude of these blockheads so that we could enjoy seeing all of them. Thanks for sharing these with us, Kim!

Dia de la Abby: #85 La Calavera Catrina Doll
A few years ago, I started making a La Calavera Catrina doll. I crocheted the doll, but never finished decorating it. Last week, I starting participating in a 30 day drawing challenge. Today's challenge was "Dolls or Puppets", so it was the perfect time to play with finishing up my doll concept. I drew everything with a pencil, inked it, and used colored pencils. To see what other projects I'm working on, follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Crafty Lady Abby. To see the other 84 skulls I've created over the years, go here.

Skeleton Body Art
Elvis Schmoulianoff does incredible body paint artwork. You might have seen her work featured in the past. She shared with us this Dia de los Muertos face art and a video of a skeleton ringmaster. I'm fond of body painting. It takes incredible skill to paint bodies and make the artwork last for hours. I don't think I'll ever tire of seeing artwork on bodies...well alive ones at least. You can find more of Elvis' body artwork on her website, Facebook, and Twitter. She's part of the artists collective Happy Slap Boutique.

Dia de la Abby: #84 Sugar Skulls and Marigolds Sneakers
I had a plain pair of canvas sneakers laying around unworn, for several years. I decided to paint sugar skulls, marigolds, vines, and leaves on them. I love Dia de los Muertos motifs and often incorporate elements from the celebration, into my artwork. These sneakers are just another canvas for me, and a great way to use my artwork for practical things. Head over to my blog to see additional photos and follow the tutorial, for these sneakers! Dia de la Abby: #83 La Calavera Catrina Makeup
A couple weeks ago, I attended a party on Dia de los Muertos. Over the past few years, I've been doing skull makeup at least once a year, for various things. I decided this was the perfect time to do a La Calavera Catrina, in honor of Dia de los Muertos. I wanted to play with a softer design and do colored eyes instead of my normal black. For this one, I also painted bones on my neck and decolletage. For more photos and a makeup tutorial, head on over to my blog. To find out what else I'm creating, follow me on Facebook, and Twitter.

Dia de los Muertos Makeup
Nonna Tarmina from Western Washington sent these photos of her "daughter Janine and grandson Connor dressed up for a Dia de los Muertos celebration last year." Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, but in some places, the festivities go on for weeks. This is the time of year where we see lots of great costumes and artwork for this holiday. Many more to come!

Seven Hills Scooter Skull
Clear the roads and make way for today's skull!!! This piece of genuine RVA artwork is courtesy of Skull-A-Day friend, Meena Khalili. Meena's day of the dead skulls are adorning a metal glove box door that is on a Vespa P200 that the Seven Hills Scooter Club will be giving away at this year's "Indian Summer Scooter Rally", featuring a day of the dead theme, from Nov. 8-10. You heard me right! Not only will you get this one of a kind door featuring screen printed paper, gesso, acrylic inks, Micron pens, and clear coat spray (to seal and weatherproof artwork) done by the superbly talented Meena, but the Club is also throwing in a Vespa scooter to boot! To see more of the artful in work processing then check out Meena's blog. To find out more about the Scooter Rally click here. Sugar Skull Makeup
Dina Gerold from Philadelphia, PA, created this sugar skull makeup. She explained her process, " Love sugar skulls and wanted to try this for Halloween 2013. Looked at many images and watched a couple video's, got my supplies ready and here is the outcome." It's the season for Dia de los Muertos makeup. The holiday is coming up soon, November 1st and 2nd, and it's definitely on my mind too. I enjoy seeing the variety of interpretations of a sugar skull makeup. I like the use of the red eyeshadow around the eyes and along the cheekbones. The flower crown works well with the makeup. I'd love to see what the rest of her costume looks like, since this makeup and crown normally accompany a festive costume. However you celebrate Dia de los Muertos, it's a great holiday to reflect on you family history and honor those who departed before you.

Dia de la Abby: #82 Papel Picado Pumpkin
It's been a long time since I've done a Dia de la Abby post. It's that time of year when I do a lot of skull crafts and I'd thought you all would like my 1st one of the Halloween season. This one is inspired by Alisa Burke's Lace Inspired Pumpkins tutorial, and papel picado (Mexican cut paper). I followed the lines of the pumpkin to place the designs. I used a thin paint pen to draw on the pumpkin. You can find these at most craft supply shops in a variety of colors and neutrals. Some have glitter. They are very easy to use and great for detailed line painting like this. If you create a skull pumpkin (or any skull thing) this season, don't hesitate to submit them to us! We love seeing what you all create. It's a perfect time of year to get inspired by skulls, and create something marvelous! I'll post another skull adorned creation this October, and it will have a tutorial, like many past ones! To find out what else I'm creating, follow me on Facebook, and Twitter.
