Dia de la Abby: #86 Dia de los Muertos Box

Inspired by Valentine's Day and Dia de los Muertos, I took a heart shaped box and transformed it into a dark Valentine box. I covered the box with tissue paper, to give it a faux leather look. I painted a sugar skull, flowers, and leaves on the box, as a way of personalizing it. This box would be great to contain mementos, gifts, treats, or a shrine. Head to my blog to learn how to do the faux leather tissue paper treatment and see photos of the anatomical heart box. For the artwork, check out the Sugar Skulls and Marigolds Sneakers Tutorial. To see what else I'm creating, follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Skull Maps

Eike explains, "These are collage made of old hiking maps (37 x 37) on bristol pasteboard 50 x 50." This is an interesting reuse of materials. Reminds me of Noah's Skull Island. I wonder how these locations would look in person, if they were actually rearranged into a skull.

Laser Cut Skulls

Carl Stevenson in London, England, of Paperfiction, created this laser cut popup skull card and vinyl skull decals.

Lasers are awesome. These creations reconfirm that I need to play with a laser cutter. The precision they create, lend themselves to being used for fantastic designs like these. Carl shared these pieces with us, but check out his Etsy shop, Paperfiction, for more awesome creations.

[BONUS] Papercraft Skulls In-Use

Melanie Church is "a librarian at Greenlease Library at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO. I found your papercraft skull online and thought it would be perfect for the spooky side of our fall book display. The student assistants who work at the circulation desk had a lot of fun making these. They were an even bigger hit than the hand-turkeys we made the week before."

We love seeing the Papercraft Skull being used! This festive Autumn display of papercraft skulls, origami frogs, much approved scary books, and other seasonal artwork is great! I'm glad the student assistants enjoyed making them and the response was so good.

If any of you has made anything using the Free Stuff on our blog, please submit it to us! We love seeing what you all create, and want to share it!

DIY Paper Skull

Artist Lorna Love from New Zealand sent us one of the paper craft skulls she made using a design she  created with inspiration from the Skullmaster's 72. Papercraft Skull.

*You can download your own blank template of her skull design HERE.

Sheepish C says:

It is always wonderful to see what is created through the inspiration of this site.  I adore this self contained design as I can imagine putting a flame-less tea light inside a finished piece to create some spooky ambiance.  Thank you for sharing your design with all of us here and perhaps the next unique papercraft skull we see here will be created with your inspiration in mind.

Skull Card

Jennifer Ferrell, created a skull card for Halloween.

Receiving a card is always a nice way to know someone is thinking about it. Receiving a hand made personalized card oozes love. Jennifer created the skull by tearing and aging white cardstock. She used a stamp set for the spider and web designs. She placed a red rhinestone in the misshapen eye, to resemble a pirate's eye patch. For more of Jennifer's work, visit her blog, Ferrellgraph.

[CONTEST] Win a Cardboard Safari Vince Skull

Thank you for participating. This contest is now closed.

We're happy to offer our readers the opportunity to win a skull from Cardboard Safari. "Cardboard Safari designs, manufactures and distributes home decor products worldwide using sustainable materials and state of the art manufacturing technologies. The tall tales and misadventures of my (owner Chris Jessee) woodsman cousin inspired the design of the first Cardboard Safari product, Bucky the deer trophy. Other trophy heads quickly followed as friends and customers made requests for their favorite animals. Our fun products inspire the soul and imagination of our customers at an affordable price." The folks at Cardboard Safari, are excited to participate in this Skull-A-Day giveaway by offering a Special Edition, "Vince", full-size human skull, to one lucky Skull-A-Day reader!

"Vince" is made of over 50 laser cut layers of recycled cardboard, a non-toxic, environmentally friendly product. Laser cutting makes for a precision fit and easy assembly using layered construction. Packaged flat for shipping; includes detailed instructions. There is one skull per package. This Special Edition includes a highly detail contour box. You read that right...there is assembly required and detailed instructions, because "Vince", is a fantastic 3D puzzle. This 3D skull puzzle is a great skull for teenagers to adults. Since cardboard is flammable, please keep the skull away from open flames and hot lights. Also, cardboard edges are sharp, since they are paper, so handle with care. "Vince" Measures: 6W x 6H x 8D inches

Puzzles are a great way to keep you busy on a leisurely day, and this unique one is sure to entertain you for hours. I normally put puzzles together at a house, but "Vince" deserves an adventure! To enter the contest, leave a comment below answering, where is the craziest place you would put your "Vince" skull together? I might put him together deep in the Paris, France catacombs. I think he would feel at home there.

[NOTE: If you are reading this on Facebook or Google+, be sure to leave your comment on this Skull-A-Day.com blog post if you want to be actually entered in this contest.]

Paper Skull Latern

Max Rubenacker, from Colorado, created "A little paper craft lantern...to print out and attach to Christmas lights for my Dia de los Muertos celebrations." The design is "inspired by Manny Calavera of Grim Fandango."

It's that time of year where I have Halloween and Dia de los Muertos on my mind every day. I love simple paper craft projects like these. This one was designed to fit over Christmas lights, so they are transformed into skull lights for a Dia de los Muertos celebration. These would be a great project for a group. I can easily see these paint or drawn on, to make them more festive, by people of all ages. Dia de los Muertos is of course about celebration of your heritage and family, so what better way to celebrate than doing a family activity. Noah's Papercraft Skull could also be used as Christmas light covers, with or without the articulated jaw. Feel free to print out both of the paper skulls and use them to decorate your abode. Halloween and Dia de los Muertos only come 3 days a year, but for a skull filled house like mine, having these up year round wouldn't be out of place.

Dia de la Abby: #75 Skull of Triangles

This piece is inspired by various geometric artwork that I've seen recently.

I wanted to challenge myself by using only triangles. Many months ago, I collected paint swatches in 30 shades of blue from a hardware store. I had no project in mind when I collected them. I only thought they would be an interesting medium to work with. I included pieces with the paint color names, so the medium type was more obvious. I used the different shades and tones of the paint swatches to create shadows and highlights in the skull, and make flowers, vines, and leaves.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  FacebookGoogle+ and/or Twitter.

Dia de la Abby #72: Cut Paper Skull Pendant

One of my favorite pieces I made for Skull-A-Day, is my first piece, my Cut Paper Sugar Skull. I decided I loved it so much, I wanted to make a mini version as a pendant.

Unframed

Framed

This pendant style might also look familiar. I bought a set of them when I made #42: Skull and Heart Necklace. Unlike my first piece, this one took a lot less time. I used the same type of black paper, left over tissue paper, and techniques to create this pendant. To give you an idea of scale, the pendant frame is 1.5" x 1.5". This means the cut paper piece is about 1" x 1". The pendant, like #42, is reversible. The reverse is a square of the paper I used as the background for this photograph. It's a flocked piece of paper. On the reverse of that is a print I used to create the skull for #51: Collage Skull. Today's creation pulls from three of my favorite Dia de la Abby projects.
