A Skull by Any Other Name...

I have a big art exhibition coming up this July and August here in Richmond, Virginia at Quirk Gallery. The show will feature a wide selection of the original 365.25 Skulls as well as several new pieces made specifically for the show (and it is first time any of the pieces will be for sale). The only problem is I need a title! Below is a list of what I've come up with so far. Can you help me out and let me know which one/s you prefer and/or give you own suggestion/s for what it could be? Thanks!

  • The Skull Show
  • Vanitas
  • Memento Mori
  • Carpe Diem
  • Postmortem
  • After Life
  • Still Life
  • I [heart] Skulls
  • Skulls

p.s. I'll post more details about the show as it gets closer!

Skull Fanatic: Wolf Leach

This month's addition to the Skull Fanatic series is Wolf Leach. He says...

"I have been a skull fanatic for as long as I can remember. I guess it may have started back in the Sixties when I was about 5 or 6 years old while watching horror movies through openings between my fingers. I always thought they looked really cool. My Dad also had a skull tattoo that he got when he was in the Service during the Korean War....I also have dozens of t-shirts with skulls in different configurations on them. Many of my friends and relatives buy me skull related paraphernalia for birthdays and such. I think my 9 year old daughter has become a fanatic as well. She now has many t-shirts and jewelery items depicting skulls."

Below are a few skulls from his collection (L-R snowflake obsidian, hematite, snowflake obsidian, and unakite) as well as a logo he created for his guitar picks and case...

Are you a certified/certifiable Skull Fanatic? If so, send an image or two of your personal skull/skeleton collection and tell us a bit about what makes you so crazy for skulls, how many skulls you own, and whatever else you think is pertinent!

One upon a time...

Just wanted to point out that thanks to the hard work of the site's anonymous benefactor Citizen Agent you now have a way to look at all of the original skulls in this project without digging through the archives! He's made three pages of links which encompass all original 365.25 skulls, plus an additional page for the new skulls that have been coming up periodically. The links are below, but they can also now be found in the sidebar under "about". I hope this gives the new fans of the site a chance to get caught up and older fans a chance to revisit their favorites.

SKULLS 1-122
SKULLS 123-244
SKULLS 245-365.25

Death Mask Skull

Andrew Schrock from DC/Richmond, VA says, "I was inspired by your site and began my own ' ___ a Day' escapade a while back but have only published it recently (aDeathMaskaDay). I've created one of my Death Masks as a reaction to Skull-a-Day, I hope you enjoy it!" He even kindly gave me this mask for my personal collection, so an extra thanks to Andrew! Be sure to check out his daily Death Masks HERE.

Sunday Simulacra - Round 31

OK so Cameron didn't actually take this picture, but kudos to him/her for discovering a skull in space via the Hubble telescope...

Scott "Drac" Smale of Mishawaka, Indiana, discovered this creepy weather system on the local news (he also provided some skull coverage to protect the innocent weatherman)...

And Arbyn found this happy skull fellow on the bottom of a roller skate...

New Skull-A-Day Notebooks from Modofly!

The fine folks at Modofy, who previously brought you the lovely laser-cut Moleskine notebooks have just relaunched their site, with a ton of great new products, including four Skull-A-Day designs! The new notebooks have full-color printed fabric covers that feature wraparound art from dozens of amazing artists. Of course I would hope you'd consider buying one (or more) or my designs, but really all of the books are great and the money goes to help a small business stay afloat and of course a portion goes to the artists as well!

You can check out my four current designs here (front and back art shown):

Tesselated Pattern

Here's what the finished notebooks (from some of the other artists) look like...

Brand New T-Skull brought to you by I Can Has Cheezburger!

Hey folks, this one's NOT an April Fool's Day joke, the fine folks at I Can Has Cheezburger & FAILblog have kindly agreed to make and sell the latest Skull-A-Day T-shirt for me! The L33T Skull shirt (based on my skull #48) is the first non-LOL/FAIL product they've made and it's available exclusively through the LOLMart HERE. Please buy one and show them that this was a good decision and that they should make more of my skulls into shirts!

Cheesy Stuffed Peppers Skulls

Marco from Italy made these delicious looking stuffed peppers with cheese skulls! He says, "some of the skull eyes are just the natural cheese holes (emmental probably, or edamer)." Here they are before and after cooking...

This would make a great dinner party with my own (Who Cut The) Cheese Skull(?)!

SKULLS The Audio Book! (April Fool's 2009)

Hey folks, I'm very excited to announce that an audio version of my book SKULLS is going to be released this summer! It's read by the incredibly talented Eliza Skinner, who you may know from her roles in Amy At The Club & Pop Tudors, and features the complete unabridged text of the book on 3 CDs. It'll be available on Amazon.com and of course I encourage you to ask for it at your local independent bookstore when it's available. Right now the release date is set for June 2nd, but you can get a special sneak listen below. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do...
