Happy Skull Appreciation Day!
10 years ago today, I made a tiny orange paper skull that started a chain reaction that completely transformed my life!
The Skull-A-Day project was a simple idea, meant to boost me out of a creative rut that I'd fallen into. I never expected it would lead me to a new career, opportunities to travel the world, multiple book deals, opportunities to show my art in museums and galleries internationally, and even a visit to The Martha Stewart show. I still get opportunities almost daily related to the project. 10 years of dividends on a 1 year investment is pretty amazing. All of this is the reason I consistently encourage others to take on the daily creative challenge. Even as small a commitment as 30-days is enough to create major changes in people's lives. Please join me in celebrating our craniums today by taking a moment to do one little creative act and sharing it with the world, you never know where it will lead!
If you're a longtime fan of the project I'd love to hear from you below (when did you find it? how did it inspire you?).
If you're up for a bigger challenge why not make your own 30-days of skulls starting today. If you share it with the #CreativeSprint & #SkullADay hashtags I'll track you down and give you a prize!
Also if you haven't picked up a copy of the Skull-A-Day book, featuring all 365 of the original skulls, plus a great essay from the Mütter Museum's curator Anna Dhody, now would be a good time, as the publisher Chop Suey Books is offering it in combination with the new book I wrote with my sister Creative Sprint for a massive discount! Get it HERE.
p.s. I'll be re-sharing the first 30 days of the project, starting today on Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook & Twitter.

Celebrate Skull Appreciation Day on June 4th!
On June 4th, 2017 Skull-A-Day turns 10!
In 2007 Noah Scalin had an idea. He would make a different skull a day for a year on his blog, the idea was simple, but crazy enough to go viral within weeks. It landed him book deals and an appearance on the Martha Stewart Show, all the while completely transforming his art and life in the process. Because of its rabid following the Skull-A-Day project continued long after its first year and grew from a fanbase to an international community of skull art creators!
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of his seminal Skull-A-Day project we're kicking off a 30-day “skull-a-bration” and everyone is invited!
Starting on June 4th – the date Skull-A-Day project launched 10 years previously (now known as Skull Appreciation Day) – Noah will be re-sharing the first 30 skulls daily on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr.
In addition skull lovers everywhere are invited to celebrate Skull Appreciation Day on June 4th, by sharing their own original skull themed artworks on a variety of platforms.
Prizes will be given to anyone who completes their own 30-day skull art challenge between June 4 and July 3 using the #SkullADay & #CreativeSprint hashtags.
Sign up for the Creative Sprint mailing list today to get a special weekly inspiration email during the Skull-A-Day celebration, featuring creativity boosting prompts, Noah’s lessons from the project, and free downloads.

Spinkle Skull
I haven't made a skull in a while, but I was inspired when I sat down beside a bowl of this colorful ice cream topping at the launch event for the Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Business 10-day Creative Sprint. I love that just being around other people being creative makes me want to create as well!

Happy Skull Appreciation Day!
For those of you that don't know, June 4th marks the start of my original Skull-A-Day project way back in 2007. After the project ended I kept the site going as a place for the community that formed around it to continue sharing their skull art and I dubbed it Skull-A-Day 2.0. This year is Skull-A-Day 10.0! It's been an amazing journey these past 9 years and there isn't a day that goes by that I'm not experiencing a benefit of that commitment to practice. I highly recommend giving a daily creative project a shot, you never know where it will take you. And be sure to give your head bone some extra love today.

Dead Media 5: Newspaper Skull
I was invited to speak at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas and as part of my visit I worked with students in the graphic design program to create a new large scale anamorphic installation in the lobby of the School of the Arts building. The timing was appropriate as it was just announced that the local newspaper would no longer be printing in town, but moving production to another city before eventually transitioning to just a digital format. This temporary piece will stay up for just a few days before it is disassembled and recycled.
This piece is part of my ongoing Dead Media series. Would you like me to make one at your school? Get in touch.

Snowmageddon Skull
My hometown was hit by this year's crazy blizzard and since we're not used to dealing with snow down South, everything shut down. After 2 days stuck at home we all start to get a bit stir crazy. Luckily the sun was out today and snow was finally packing friendly, so I decided to add another snow skull creation to my collection...
And after two days in the sun...

Fire, Flour & Fork Skull
I was commissioned by Real Richmond to create a piece of artwork for the Halloween portion of their Fire, Flour & Fork event this year.
I created this papel picado style illustration to be used on all of their marketing materials at the Beaux Arts Ball held at The Jefferson Hotel on Halloween evening, which also happened to be the 120th anniversary of its opening!
As well as being used online and in print, my image was also projected onto the hotel itself and used as decoration inside the lobby.
Some of my other work was also on display as projections in the space!

Dead Media 4
I was asked to create a new site specific installation at the Science Museum of Virginia here in Richmond, Virginia as part of the RVA MakerFest. The local creative reuse organization Stuff Redux helped me collect the hundreds of CDs & DVDs I needed to create this anamorphic piece.
