241. Skull Bread A.K.A. Night of The Living Bread

Baked Bread. A huge thanks to my friend Carra for preparing the dough, letting me use her kitchen and helping with the process! Here's her recipe:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix thoroughly:
1-1/8 Cup of Water
3 Cups Flour +1 Tablespoon
1 Tablespoon Sugar
3/4 teaspoon Salt
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
1-1/2 teaspoon Yeast

After mixing knead, let rest and rise.
Then knead again, let rest and rise again.
(or use a bread machine if you have one)

Bake in bread pan at 350 degrees for 35-65 minutes (depending on thickness)

*For Dark bread, use same recipe, but
Subtract 1 Tablespoon Flour
Add 6 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
Add 1/8 Cup of Water

  1. This is fantastic. I work with bread dough every day, and can tell everyone that doing this kind of thing is a big challenge. Great work.

  2. Thanks Terry, that means a lot to me! I've never made bread before, so I was happy that it came out even vaguely recognizable!

  4. NOT that you would, but this seems like the perfect kind of bread for eating endangered species sandwiches!

Kidding aside, I love this. How'd it taste?

  5. I can't believe how well that came out! Was that how you expected it? (Did you pick the best two pieces? :P) How did you get that mushroom shape? I know the top normally puffs out like that, but the bottom is hardly rectangular (like you would expect from a conventional loaf tin).

  6. Bravo! Can I order a loaf in time for Halloween?

Mmmmm... honey smoked eagle club sandwich.

  7. No eagle for me, thanks - just a peanut butter and skelly.

If I didn't know you better I'd scream photoshop, but since I do...absolutely incredible. You never cease to surprise.

  10. It looks like marble cake.
Your blog is having some effect on me. I was watching the news, on the projected background I noticed a skull, maybe just the shape.

  11. Once again, you absolutely shocked me with your abilities. I am generally so jaded, yet clicking on this site has yet to elicit anything less than a gasp or "holy crap!" response.

    Of course, usually the method doesn't make me so hungry ... {{slinks off in search of food}}

  12. Thanks everyone!

    Keltie: It tasted pretty good!

Kim: Those were definitely the best pieces, though the others were passable. It's not exactly what I intended, but considering hard it is to control, it's about as good as it could get. I used a deep bread pan, but it continued to expand a bit after it was removed.

    Chirxcel: Amazingly just one!

  16. SO many possibilities! Rye would do well for the darker parts, but cocoa? yum... gimme! The way you made #241 (LOVE the title!) could it be used for French toast? nom nom nom

"Noah, my French toast is grinning at me!"

  17. Wonder if you could add red food coloring or some such to fondue to serve with this...

Good for a Halloween party at any rate.
