277. Circus Skull - for Terry

Arranged "Circus Peanut" Candies (18in x 26in [46cm x 66cm]). The recent series of brilliant Circus Peanut themed posts by Terry at Bent Objects inspired today's skull. Here's a detail shot if you're not familiar with this banana flavored confection:

  1. Ha!!

First, I would like to say that I'm extremely honored!

Second, at long last we have found what these things are really good for- Art. I'm pretty sure that if you wanted to leave these in this arrangement, the piece would be darn near archival.

  2. Thanks Terry. Yeah, they're definitely not meant for eating, that's for sure!

  3. I am squealing like a fangirl at the crossover/merging of two of my favorite blogs...you are both scarily talented [but a good scary].

  4. I wonder if they would stick together if you got them wet like those cornstarch packing peanuts?
Someone else has to try it because I can't stand the feel or smell of them.

  5. More great art from a melding of great minds. Nice!

P.S.-I have never eaten circus peanuts because they seem gross, but I had no idea that they were banana flavored. Shocking!

  6. How many did the cats steal, and for how long will you find them hidden around the house?

  7. I love it when the world gets all small like this...

  8. @tatman

That's probably because they aren't banana flavored at all. Maybe Wikipedia is right and they are flavored with artificial banana flavor, but if so they are not even remotely reminiscent of bananas in flavor.

  9. i love the fact that my two favorite blogs are united....when books come out...im buying both.

  10. For the love of all that is good in this world, how could any one of you say a word against the succulent taste and aroma of circus peanuts? Just to look at a photo of them is to smell them, to smell them is to taste them. Obviously, you guys were not brought up on Tang, Space Sticks, Pixie Stix and Candy Corn (which was a year round staple and not shoved into a corner of Christmas). Folks... we're talking a decade before Pop Rocks. And the nest news of all was that it didn't matter how old they were. We didn't need no stinkin' expiration dates! Why (cough cough, geezer spits out her dentures and sinks to the floor with a smile on her face...

  11. Banana?! Really?! *That's* what flavor they're going for with those things?! Huh. Never knew that.

(I am part of the small minority of adults who will actually eat circus peanuts... but I never knew they were supposed to be banana flavored.)

  12. Obviously, another fabulous skull (and by far the best use for circus peanuts ever). But is anyone else wondering why oh why the mental giants of confectionery decided to make banana-flavored peanuts? Peanuts that taste like bananas—where's the logic in that? And yes, they're god-awful.

  15. I love the tie-in between the two projects/blogs! There's no way to escape showing my age when I admit that this reminds me of a time in my childhood, when we'd go to Sears. The one near us would sometimes have the orange peanuts in an orange flavour sometimes but most of the time had them in that funky wannabe banana flavour. I would have to decide between the peanuts and maple nut goodies.

Gotta go. My right knee just gave out on me again and I have to yell at the kids on my lawn.

  16. Why are peanuts banana flavoured?

From the way you all talk, it sounds like they don't particularly taste like banana, but rather like an accepted "banana flavour" flavour. Sort of like all of those candies that are supposedly grape, but just taste "purple".

Do they taste like those marshmallow bananas that actually are shaped like bananas?

  17. Oh, man. I have an unofficial 'no food' rule with my maskmaking, but you're both tempting me quite a lot ...

Fortunately, I have no idea where to get circus peanuts from.

  18. Speaking as someone who actually worked for candy company that manufactured these little gems, I do have to agree that they are banana flavored. They are not quite the same flavor as the marshmallow bananas, but are sweeter if that is even possible. I am Canadian and had never seen these before working at this company, apparently they are an American favorite.

  19. I hate Circus Peanuts, but I love this skull! If they really tasted like banana I'd probably like them.

  20. BANANA?! After the thousands I must have consumed (along with twinkies, ho-ho's, ding-dongs and TANG!), I never would have guessed they were going for banana.

But by all that's good and right in this world, confection that will never expire, clowns that scare children, and Peeps that are only yellow and peep-shaped, that is one yummy looking skull.

  21. Circus Peanuts! A modern day marvel for sure. I've yet to taste a fresh one...I here they taste like banana skulls!
