Sunday Simulacra - Round 30
Leo discovered this buttered skull on his toast...
My friend Phil discovered a laser skull hiding in his wife's older Mac mouse...
And Jack Morgan found this skull urinal mat at Blackfriars Playhouse during their appropriately skully production of Revengers Tragedy. He says it is, "the skulliest play I have ever seen. Vindice poisons his murdered girlfriend's skull (pictured) and tricks the lascivious duke into making love with it. Then there's a head in a bag and more skulls. It makes Hamlet's skull scene look like a talk on archeology or something." (image of Benjamin Curns by Tommy Thompson for the American Shakespeare Center).

Tintype Skull
Generally I want people to have made the actual skulls they share, but I'm making an exception for this excellent image by Anthony Lawson, since it was made in such an interesting way. He says, "this is a tintype photograph, a process from the late 1800's. A sheet of metal is coated with a light sensitive colloid emulsion, exposed in the camera and developed resulting in a one of a kind image on the plate. This was shot with my 4x5 camera but I plan to do shots with my 5x7 and 8x10 after I work out the bugs of the process"

Skull-A-Day Wallpaper (the non-digital kind)
After many requests I have finally found a partner to create actual wallpaper out of my Ornament(al) Skull pattern! Steve Abrams Designs is now selling a variety of colorways through their Designer Wallcoverings site. Printed on eco-friendly fabric or paper, pricing can be obtained by contacting them directly HERE.
The Office Skull
TeratoMarty shared this excellent office decoration saying, "Last summer, I was randomly uprooted from my office and inserted into a cube farm at my job in Watertown, Massachusetts. I don't like anything about the cube, except for the blood-red wall. I recycled cover sheets from the printer to make the giant pixel art shown in the attachments- it's 14 feet high and 11 feet wide. The statisticians were frightened, the programmers thought it was hilarious, and human resources just didn't get it."
Amazingly TeratoMarty only recently encountered Skull-A-Day and didn't realize we had more in common than a love of skulls, but also an interest in office supplies, and pixels. See my own 8x8 skull made of Post-Its HERE.

Teens love SKULLS
I've been completely blown away by the positive response that my book has gotten from the librarian community! The latest honor is that SKULLS has been included in the New York Public Library's Stuff for the Teen Age 2009. This is the 80th year of this list of the best books, music, movies and video games for teens. Items were chosen by working with a teen advisory staff who rated all of the items for consideration. Below is a short video of some of the responses to SKULLS...
As part of their teen related programming this year I've been asked to come speak to both librarians and teenagers in NYC about the book and project. I'll post the details when I have them.

[BONUS] Skull Stencils in Use
Sage Lesko in Boulder, Colorado made this nifty tote bag using my original Stencil Skull...
Alex Bing in Sweden made this delicious looking white chocolate cheesecake for his 28th birthday.
It is decorated with blackberries and a cocoa skull using my own Cocoa Skull Stencil...
And Aaron says, "I wanted a red Eee PC 901, what I got was definitely pink. Fortunately your stencil and some self-adhesive vinyl, solved the problem. Thanks for making it available."...

Coat of Many Skulls
Shay Hall made this terrific piece saying, "This skull coat is based off a pattern for a Hungarian coat - no skulls on the original, alas. The entire coat is made of felt, with little felt skulls cut out and hand-stitched onto the surface. It's surprisingly warm, and quite attention-getting. I make art coats, and this was an early example. I intend to return to the skull motif soon - a little fancier, perhaps?"

[BONUS] 369. Pull-tab Skull for the USMC Skulz
Made in honor of the USMC Skulz...
It's been a while since I've made an original skull for the site, but I had to come out of retirement to thank the Marines of the Skulz unit in Al Asad, Iraq, who have been fans of Skull-A-Day for a while (and were previously featured on the site HERE). They recently sent me a fantastic care package from Iraq (isn't it supposed to be the other way around?) before finishing their time there. The box contained a note from the guys with a hand-cut skull on the front, Iraqi Coke and Pepsi cans, a carved cork skull, some Miller promotional items thanking the marines, a cammo hat, an OIF-OEF dog tag bottle opener, a small plastic skull, two commemorative coins, as well as a bag of pull-tabs specifically for skull-making. It was a weird flashback getting into the skull-making mode again (and the hours spent arranging and photographing reminded me how happy I am that I'm not making them daily anymore), but the time spent on this was the least I could do to thank the Skulz again.
Happily the gang should be mostly on their way home soon (if not already). However the next batch of Marines will be there shortly to replace them, so please, if you care about the health and well-being of the American troops who are overseas, consider doing something nice for them by participating in a group like Books for Soldiers or donating to the USO.

Cute & Creepy Skull Dolls
Junker Jane shared another terrific skull-y creation: a Skeleton Girl Plush Rag Doll...
and Al Frank made this frightening fellow. He says, "This is mister bunny. He was made of scrap material when I was in Jackson, Mississippi and needed a friend. He's been missing for 2 years now. I fear I will have to start watching my friends more closely when they come by."...

Sunday Street Skulls
I usually don't post work that's not made by the artist themselves, but this group of anonymously made skulls found on the streets were just too fun not to share:
Christopher in Seattle, Washington said, "Someone must have remembered there was a skull deep down in the layers of posters and decided to reveal him for us!"...
My friend Kate Black spotted this on 4th Street in NYC and thought I might have had something to do with it (nope, not me!)...
And medgey sent this found note. It says, "Dear Diary, This retarded kid named Dennis has a crush on me! He kissy faced me and I saw him writing, "I love Sara," I'm so embarrassed! How do I get him away from me."...
