(Organic) Peanut Butter & Fruit Spread on (locally made) Bread. I appear to be on a food skull kick again (sorry, no cookies yet). My understanding is that this type of sandwich is not very popular outside of the US, is that true? And yes, I am eating this for lunch.
P.S. Skull-A-Day is featured in the special Halloween issue of MAKE magazine! Be sure check it out when it hits stands next week.
p.p.s. To Rob: I tried using the sandwich box you gave me, but it didn't fit! There's still a chance it'll make it into a future post though, we'll see.
Really Tasty!
ReplyDeleteI do especially like the knife underneath ...
in sweden they don't like PBJ at all - they say peanut butter is fattening! something i never thought of, eating all those PBJ sandwiches as a kid.
ReplyDeletelove the skulls btw
hee hee hee hee....yummmm!
ReplyDeleteit's true - pb&j is unheard of over here in Europe. you get the strangest looks when you mention it... they don't know what they're missin!
The peanut butter that I've tried outside the U.S. was terrible. Not enough sugar. I think that's the big problem with PB&J's not catching on.
ReplyDeleteAnd they eat Nutella. No way that is any less fattening than sugary peanut butter.
In Australia we are more about the Vegemite toast. PB&J's have never caught on.
ReplyDeleteI can send you some Vegemite if you like :)
Hmm, I've never had Vegemite, it looks scary, but maybe I need to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteDon't do it! It's a trap! Aww kitty, if you send him Vegemite he might hate Australians thereafter.
ReplyDeleteIn Australia we love peanut butter sandwiches (no, it's not very sugary, it's very nutty -- that's a *good* thing), and we love jam sandwiches, but never the twain shall meet.
I know some people here like banana and honey sandwiches, which I think is equally weird.
You can buy peanut butter in the UK, but if you eat a PB&J sandwich people will look at you like you're a nutter (pun not intended).
ReplyDeletejust found this blog yesterday. it rocks. keep up the splendid work!
ReplyDeleteI have to say it had the makings of the cutest sandwich ever.
ReplyDeleteAnd the reason why Australians prefer Vegemite to Peanut Butter..Sanitarium? you know a place to treat a long term illness.
Not good for Vegetarians
Developed for Vegetarians
Peanut butter and jam: yes, we like that in England!
ReplyDeleteOr peanut butter and marmite...though I draw the line at all three together :/
I've never had the desire to eat a skull until I came to your site. You are great at making death seem appetizing. Nice work as always!
ReplyDeletepb & j sammie + skulls = amazing!
ReplyDeleteyeah, I got some friendly teasing when I showed up for tea one morning at the printshop here in Dresden Deutschland with a jar of peanut butter and a roll. I good-heartedly countered with the fact that it is an inexpensive high-quality protein source that is very easy to grow in hot climates with bad soil...and low on the food chain!
ReplyDeleteI am planning to read a biography of George Washington Carver as a result -- they aren't just for pb & j, ya' know --they have a wide range of admirable qualities and uses.BTW, this skull has my second favorite name so far - I still have the biggest crush on Crushagami though so far. I think PB & Skully should be a shirt, goes with the first theme of America - the all-american sandwich...think about it.
YUM!
ReplyDeleteI was talking to an English child I know about PB&J sandwiches and she said she thought they sounded disgusting -- but then I realised that when I said "jelly" she was thinking "Jello" not "jam"!
ReplyDeleteI recently returned to the US from a year in Australia. I was horrified of vegemite. The Aussies were horrified of my PB&Js. It was a cultural learning experience for all of us.
ReplyDeleteWhat IS Vegemite? Is it like a yeast thing? Does it have a jam like consistency? Does it have nutritional value (referencing Kris) I've heard it only in some British jokes, maybe Monty Python or Fawlty Towers or the Young Ones, something like that. It sounds yukky!
ReplyDeletea lot of australians enjoy peanut butter and honey sandwiches!
ReplyDeletewhen i was a kid i thought it was crazy that americans eat peanut butter & jelly, coz we call it jam... jelly is jello here!
and mim- vegemite is a yeast extract (how gross does that sound!), with spices and vegetable extracts...
it's deliciously salty!
similar to marmite/promite, but... not too similar. ;)
Yeah I think most Americans my age only know Vegemite from that Men At Work song!
ReplyDeleteHow would I go sending you some Vegemite?
ReplyDeletei'm thinking whatever you don't eat might make for interesting paint.
:)
Try me on listone(at)soporific(dot)net if you are interested. That goes for other people that might be interested too. Not for Kim though... hee.. wayyy to obvious a trap!
Thanks Kitty! Address is on its way to you. As long as it's vegetarian I'm willing to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteI think there is a nation-wide schism over Vegemite in Australia. You either love it or hate it. I would much sooner eat PB&J than Vegemite, despite it being far less healthy for you.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think it tastes disgusting. But, uhmm, enjoy! :P
Now isn't that creative. lol :)
ReplyDeletescary skull! but only because I'm allergic to it.
