116. Grid Skull

Cut Cardboard, 2 Views (approx. 4.5" x 6" x 6"). I'm thinking this might be a prototype for something much larger. Would you like to make your own? I need to refine the pattern first, but I'll put it online once it's done!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the interlocking form was inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames specifically their House of Cards toy.

P.S. The pattern for this piece can be found at the back of my book SKULLS!

P.P.S. If you don't have the interest in making your own from scratch, you can also buy a kit from Cardboad Safari.

  1. I love this! I made some nifty cardboard furniture in the 70s, from a book called Nomadic Furniture. It was actually very sturdy and comfortable. You could do HUGE skulls. Sittable skulls. Skull side tables.

  2. Last November my friends and I made a similar cardboard grid in the shape of a turkey, wrapped it in chicken wire, and then paper maché. It was a lot bigger, though, like three feet tall. Then we shot it with a flaming bow and arrow. I'm not suggesting you burn anything, but it's really easy to scale a cardboard grid up, and a giant paper maché skull might be cool.

  4. This reminds me of the structure used to make a grass chair that emerges from your lawn. A lawn skull would be a nice addition to any suburban backyard ;)

Plus what Mike said, please post a pattern if you can.

  7. Yes, I would love to see a pattern too. I would make miniature ones to hang from my Christmas tree. That would freak the neighbours ;o)

  8. I think this is one of the coolest ones you've done yet! Reminds me of those balsa wood models you can get of dinosaurs. I'd love to see the pattern!

  10. I'll definitely post the pattern this weekend.

To answer Mica's question: I basically drew the pieces while looking at a skull model and picturing what the sections would look like. The interlocking form is inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames especially their House of Cards toy.
