To celebrate year 5 of Skull-A-Day I've decided to paint 100 skulls on 4 x 4in (10.16 x 10.16 cm) wooden panels over the course of the year...
This time I wanted to do something extremely light and let the wood of the panel really show through. I also wanted to try to use no straight black at all. I ended up treating the acrylic more like watercolor paint thinning it out and applying it in washes.
Oh and you might have noticed that I'm making these fairly frequently, despite my stating I would make 100 over the course of the year. The reason is that I plan to show the first batch of these at the end of this month as part of the Cabinet of Curiosities show at Asbury Lanes! So if you're in the area I hope you'll plan to come out on the 25th to see the work and me in person.

It looks like wood burning and stain. It's very interesting how you created that effect with thinned acrylic.
ReplyDeleteWell done!!! This just proves that acrylic possibilities are endless :)
ReplyDeleteI've always preferred acrylic over oil because I find the medium to be a lot more vibrant. Also, it's water-soluble and dries immediately (which is good for us impatient types).
I'm greatly looking forward to seeing the other pieces of this series.
The woodgrain of the block showing through makes this look like a photo negative that's been double exposed. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteWow...great eyesockets....actually looks like we can see a reflection of what that skull is looking at....or thinking!!:)
ReplyDeleteBravo Dude!
