Creative Sprint: Skull Edition - Day 26

Story Time!

I've been diligently making skulls all month for the Creative Sprint and posting them in my Instagram stories and on LinkedIn, but posting them here just hasn't been happening. However I thought it would be good to share this one, for the story that accompanies it.

Today's prompt was, "make a new flag for a place you've visited based on your experience there." Since my theme is skulls, the first place that popped into my head was the Catacombs of Paris.  I made a fairly classic pirate style flag, using a photo I took in the Catacombs back in 2006.

For those of you who've followed this project for a longtime, you might recognize this image. I used it as a reference on this day and on this day. So the Catacombs has a deep connection to Skull-A-Day.

You might also remember that on day 94 I created my first Skullphabet which I released as a free font for all to use with the help of Skull-A-Day fan Mark Conahan in 2007.

Then in 2019 I discovered that the Catacombs had a brand new logo that looked surprisingly familiar!...

It's not my font exactly, but it certainly bears a striking resemblance to my work. I'm not saying that no one could come up with this on their own, but my font had been available for free for a longtime before then. So I like to think I inspired their graphic designer in some way and that my project has come full circle and now there's a part of me always in the Catacombs.

Thanks for continuing to read my blog in 2025 whoever you are!

Back To Skull

I had the unique opportunity to create a giant skull from vinyl stickers on the hood of a decommissioned school bus!

If you look carefully you'll spot a vintage Skull-A-Day sticker peeking through!

This was created in conjunction with a street art sticker exhibition called Hello My Name Is which was at Gallery5 here in Richmond, VA in September.

The bus will eventually be transformed into a mobile art gallery. You find out more about the plans as they come about from Little Giant Society HERE.

Creative Sprint 2025: Skull Edition

Once again my company is holding our annual public Creative Sprint from October 1-30. Each day for 30 days we share a simple prompt and ask folks to take just a few minutes to make something and share it!

I always try to participate as well since it's inspired by my original Skull-A-Day project. AND since it's the 10th anniversary of the Creative Sprint I decided  make some daily skulls again in tribute to the project.

Here's what I did on Day 1, when the prompt was, "make something that fits in the palm of your hand, using only the materials in your immediate environment"...

This is a direct reference to day one of Skull-A-Day when I cut out an orange paper skull.  My schedule is absolutely bananas right now, with multiple overlapping creative projects, so I really don't have the time to dedicate many hours a day to skull making this time around. However it's fun to spend a little time each day thinking about the project that transformed my life and career!

If you want to see what I'm making, I'm just putting them in my Instagram stories AND in the private LinkedIn group dedicated to the Creative Sprint (you're welcome to join there if you want to take part. The prompts are being posted each morning!)

Sticker Skull: Laughing/Screaming

Skull art comes in waves for me and apparently 2025 is the Year of the Skulls for me. This is the first of 2 new pieces I created recently and more are on the way...

This is the first sticker art skull I've made since 2021 and I'm thinking that this will be part of a trilogy of pieces eventually.

This one is currently in Brooklyn for the Skull Rock At Treasure Island show at Sweet Lorraine Gallery, featuring over 160 artists.  The show opens Saturday the 4th and runs through Halloween.

If you're in the area, I hope you'll check it out in person! More details about the show can be found HERE.
