Skull Shakti Self Portrait

Elisa Rose Mountain from Chicago created this oil painting titled "Skull Shakti Self Portrait".

If you are not familiar with what a Shakti is, it is thought to be a powerful energy of creativity, change and fertility found in Hindu religion. This painting shows a division of life and death working as one. I like the blending of the two together. Both come together, so being depicted together is very fitting.

Stripeboard Skull

Everyone knows that skaters and skulls go hand in hand and Toronto's Paul McCue performs a 900 around my head with his "Stripeboard". In true Skull-A-Day fashion Paul upcycled this found skateboard and decorated it using some recycled latex paint.

I'm not sure whether Paul uses this board or not, but I wouldn't blame him if he didn't. It would hard to replace a one of a kind board after doing too many grinds. Thanks for sharing this sweet deck with us, Paul.

Thank you for submitting your work. I find your work very interesting, and your skill of creating a faux finish is amazing. For example, when I first saw “Love until Die” you had me completely fooled. The contrast between the white back ground and the faux wooden cut out, as well as other paint techniques made it appear to be a real cut out at first glance. Furthermore, I am intrigued by your subject matter, the juxtaposition of birds with wooden skulls gave me a something to think about certainly with your “Untitled” piece. It made me think about how it is that we use the “bones” of a tree to create shelter for birds only to put those houses back into the tree. What would our reaction be if we saw bones from other sources hanging in a tree. It's an amazing concept to think about how the “death” of something in used to create shelter and encourage life for something else.

Non-Tattooed Skulls

Today’s skulls come from a pair of Tattoo artists on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean.

The first piece is done by “Big Frank” who works at the Royal Peacock Tattoo Parlor in Sacramento, CA.

The next piece, done in oil, is made by Benny who works at Chopstick Tattoo in Osaka, Japan.

It is wonderful to see you two put down your guns long enough to show off your work. Often times people forget that to be good at what you do with ink you also need to have the skill away from the ink. Thank you for allowing us to see your multi-talented skills, and sharing your work with us.
