Anti-Gas Skull

Clare Twomey of North Lismore, Australia is an artist who has been using the skull as inspiration for a long time. At the moment she's part of a protest group fighting Coal Seam Gas mining. They're currently using this image on badges, later she'll finish it as a coat of arms for t-shirts and jackets.

The 'Knitting Nannas Against Gas' "peacefully and productively protest against the destruction of our land and water by exploration and mining of Coal Seam Gas and other nonrenewable energy."  Knitting with a cause and creative revolution.  Who knew that yarn could carry such weight?  Thanks for sharing, Clare!

[Flashback Friday] 5.4- Red, White & Blue Skulls

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Citizen Agent, Azurafae, and myself, Tatman, are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

In honor of our upcoming Independence Day holiday this July 4th I have decided to celebrate with some of my favorite red, white, and blue skulls.

Red- 86. Drizzled Skull

White- 246. Yarn Painting Skull

Blue(I know it's technically a white skull on blue)- 331. Bleach(ed) Skull

If you're planning on spending this weekend traveling then I wish you a safe and happy trip. No matter where you spend it let's all remember to make it a great one!

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here.

246. Yarn Painting Skull

Yarn Glued to Cardboard (8in x 11in). I was inspired by Keltie at 365 Masks to try out the technique of yarn painting!

UPDATE: Keltie just let me know that yarn painting is properly called Nearika and is practiced by the Huichol Indians of Mexico! See some examples HERE.

161. Latch Hook Skull

Latch Hooked Yarn (12in x 12in). As promised, another yarn skull (though no one guessed it would be this!). I bought a pre-existing latch hook kit of a puppy and made my own pattern using the yarn colors provided. Since the color proportions weren't exactly the same I got a second kit to have the extra yarn. I made the pattern in Photoshop by reducing a photo I took to 40 x 40 pixels and then saving it as an 8-color gif (with manually adjusted the colors to reflect the existing yarn). I enlarged the result and printed it out and then used it to determine each strand as I went. The total production time was around 9 hours (which I believe makes it the most time consuming piece yet) and actually gave me a migraine headache near the end, which I had to sleep off before I could complete it!

UPDATE: Since Kim asked, here's a link to the 40 x 40 grid (enlarged) that I made for my pattern. Have fun and be sure to send a picture of anything you make with it.

142. Yarn Skull

Arranged Yarn. I don't know how to knit or crochet (yet) so this'll have to suffice for now, though I do have another yarn idea in the works already. Can you guess what it might be?
