Rummaging through my kitchen for more things to paint with, I chose three types of tea, and hot chocolate, for this skull.
This was a fun experiment. I knew that the black tea (Lipton) would be light brown, and the hot chocolate would be dark brown. The raspberry tea is grey, though it's red-pink in the mug. The chamomile tea is a very pale brown, which was a nice surprise since it was more leaves than color in the mug. I sketched out the skull with pencil, then painted with the tea, like I would with water colors. This painting smelled great immediately, even when dry. The tea smell faded a day later, but the chocolate scent stayed.
You might wonder how I made paint from these items. It's rather simple. I took four mugs, and opened one bag into each mug, so the items were separated. Separately, I heated up some water in a liquids measuring cup, in the microwave. Once the water was warm enough, I poured a little into each mug, and poured the rest in the sink. I only needed enough water to make a concentrated infused liquid. If I had prepared the mugs, as I would to drink the liquids, then the "paint" would be too watered down and sheer. You will obviously have loose tea leaves, but I wanted this, as it adds extra concentrated color to the paper, when I painted with it. This is technique very similar to how I painted my #52 Skull Sculpture, but for that I used layers of just black tea to age it. The most easily seen variations are the bits of undissolved hot chocolate.

White Chocolate Truffle Skulls
Designer Marc Brownlow submitted these tasty skulls. He wrote: “I thought you might be interested in my Halloween project. I sculpted little skulls from polymer clay, made molds from them with food-grade silicone and then used the molds to make skull shaped truffles. The white chocolate truffles have bittersweet centers and are topped with little candy-coated walnut brains.”

This is an absolutely awesome project. I am constantly in awe of the mufti-faceted talents that our readers have at their disposal. Thank you for sharing these tasty results with us as well as your easy to follow tutorial to try this at home.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.22
With Halloween one day away, here are some skull items that will help you celebrate.
Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.
“Countdown To Halloween”
1 more day and counting...
Mathieu took this photo of his Irish coffee, in a bar in Montmartre, Paris.
Mica (Noah's sister), spotted this in an NYC thrift shop window. Noah said, he is "very tempted to buy it for (his) house".
When I was baking my Pumpkin Skull Cookie, I baked more cookies using the drop method. When I was removing them from the cookie sheet, I noticed this one looked like a skull. This was the first one to be eaten.

Dia de la Abby: #64 Pumpkin Skull Cookies
I love baking and at this time of year, I want pumpkin foods. To help fill both of those loves, I made some special cookies.
Non-baked
Baked
I followed this recipe to make the cookies. I added pumpkin spice to the dough, so the cookies had a little kick to them. I might add a bit of nutmeg to the next batch. They could use a bit more spice. I used mini chocolate chips and regular butterscotch chips to decorate this one. I placed them close together, because I knew they would spread out when baking. I chose to use mini chocolate chips, so I could have better control over the design. After decorating this one, I mixed in a lot of the chocolate and butterscotch chips into the batter, to make more cookies.
I baked them for a couple minutes longer than the recipe said. I have a gas oven. I recommend checking the thickest ones with a toothpick, at about the 8 minute mark, to see if they need more time. Mine took about 12 minutes. Then, I finished cooking the tops in the broiler for about 20 seconds. That is how I have to bake cookies with my oven. Yours might be different. This is a great cookie to make with kids, as the cookie dough is a bit firm, so decoration with the chips is easy.

Dia de la Abby: #6 - Skull Brownies (Skullnies?)
This was inspired by a craving for brownies...Cheesecake Brownies!
Unbaked

Baked

I blended both the brownie and cheesecake topping according to instructions. The part I deviated on, in order to make the skull, was the application of the cheesecake topping. You are supposed to spread it all over the top and then swirl it into the brownie batter with a knife, fork or toothpick. I used a fork to carefully put all of the cheesecake topping into a skull shape. It's really thick, but it worked out well because after baking, the face is sunken in the cheeks, which gives a nice effect to the skull. I tried to "draw" teeth in the mouth portion using a tooth pick, but it no longer shows in the baked area. I think using some of the brownie batter to draw teeth, would have shown better before and after baking. This was a great excuse to "play with my food"...which means, I'll probably make more food skulls.
No additional tutorial today, as above is basically that. However, if you don't like cheesecake brownies, you can really use any topping (mini marshmallows, small candies, crushed candies, sprinkles, peanut butter, nuts...you get the idea) to make a design on your brownies of any type. From experience, if you want to use marshmallows, I do recommend waiting until the brownies are almost done to add them. If added before baking, they can cause the brownies to not bake correctly and they also are burned by the time the brownies are done...which isn't very yummy.
My daughter and I like to eat our brownies in a mug with ice cream on top. This works for any type of cake. You can add whipped cream, grated chocolate and a fruit on top if you want to be fancy.

Chocolate Skull
Jed from Mount Barker, Australia developed this sweet "pick me up" while feeling down. "I got this idea after browsing through your wonderful collection. I've been sick at home for a while and it really brightened my day. He didn't last long though, because he started to melt and had to be... disposed of."

Wrap your mind around,
One skull eating another,
And tasting so sweet.
One skull eating another,
And tasting so sweet.
We've all heard of death by chocolate, and one would think that a chocolate skull would be the perfect graphic for that, but Jed shows how Skull-A-Day readers see the world differently. Thanks for the sweet vision of the candy cranium, Jed!

C-Rations: 0C10
This week's offering is a Chocolate bar.
7" x 4" Large chocolate candy bar carved and filled with chocolate fudge.
C. Bucket says:
Not quite a golden ticket, but maybe it means I have won a trip to the Skull-A-Day studio to visit the Skullmaster. Can't wait to meet the skull-a-lompas.
Remember each Monday during the 3.0 year I am posting an original skull design. My weekly offerings are nothing compared to the one-a-day massive project done by the Skullmaster in 1.0, but hopefully you will find some nourishment in these weekly offerings.
