Sugary Skull Jewelry

Miranda Ross an 8th grade Spanish teacher. When she's not teaching, she is crafting. She works with polymer clay and paints, creating original designs. She loves making little skull earrings and upcycling any old piece of furniture she can find with the skull motif. The photos she shared with us are of skulls with mustache earrings and a sugar skull necklace with real candy sprinkle eyes. You can find more of Miranda's work on her website Sugar Skull Vintage, Facebook, and Instagram.

Skeleton Earrings

J L Tunnell made this "pair of earrings I made a few years ago. The head/skull of each was a natural gold nugget and the skeletons were made with 14K gold wire. Each earring is about 1-1/2 inches tall."

I rarely get to see great skeleton jewelry. I'm particularly fond of skeletons that have movable joints. The skeletons dance around when someone wears them. These have a creative use of materials and great proportion. Perhaps I'll have to make my own dancing skeleton jewelry.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.11

The skull hunters are taking to the streets to find more hidden skulls. Let's see what the streets bring us this week...

I found this frightful fellow on the bricks in front of the fantastic Gallery 5 in Richmond while I was visiting for the Skull Exhibit for Skull Appreciation Day.

Kmo...Góngora sends in this brain case look alike from a bustling boulevard. "Look what I found in a metal post on the streets of Usaquen in Bogota Colombia."

And pensive pumpkin shares these wonderful earrings that she found while walking the streets. "I did not make these, let me be clear. But I found them in a vintage jewelry shop (Alana in Seattle) and know nothing about them, so I am really hopeful that someone will know something. When I mentioned to the salesgirl that they were skulls, she looked at me like I was insane. But I know a skull when I see one, and I thought these were exquisite. Very understated skulldom, so I can wear them in the straight world and not get kicked out of boring courtrooms.

Keep your peepers peeled for those hidden skulls about you and submit them to keep the hunt alive. You never know where they might turn up. Except for every Sunday here on Skull-A-Day. That's a given.

Aged Skull Earrings

Jodie Vieira, of JoMarie Jewelry, submitted these earrings. She explains "I'm a jewelry designer from Nashville, TN and I saw a speech Noah Scalin did for Etsy about generating creativity.  It inspired me to embark on a project of my own where I create a new pair of earrings every day for 100 days, because Noah inspired me I wanted to pay homage to his Skull-a-Day by making some skull earrings.  I've attached a picture of the earrings I created, they were hand sawed out of sterling silver and aged with a heat treatment, and then adorned with swarovski crystals."

I love jewelry and of course skulls. I have multiple ear piercings. I have a seen a lot of skull earrings. I have a few pairs myself. This featured pair is one of my favorites that I have seen. I like the aged and discolored appearance of the metal, from being heated. The crystals pick up those color variations well. The style is a nice take on a traditional skull and crossed bones design. They are a good size to stand out, but not be heavy on the lobe. Too many great earrings are too heavy for my ears, which causes uncomfortable stretching. These don't look like they would, which is very nice.

To be entered in today's drawing to win a button just leave a comment below stating: What kind of jewelry do your adorn your skull with? I adorn mine with 3 pairs of dangle and stud earrings.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to include a way to contact you (either an e-mail in the post OR make sure your Blogger profile has an e-mail link for you on it).

NOTE: If you're reading this on Facebook, be sure to leave your comment on the original Skull-A-Day.com post if you want to be actually entered in the contest

Dia de la Abby #44: Shrunken Skeleton Earrings

These are inspired by anatomical skeleton and skull diagrams. The torso is inspired by a heavily corseted ribcage, which is similar to my own ribcage shape...only mine is natural.

I have lost my old pair of long skeleton earrings, so I decided to make some replacements, using shrink plastic. More commonly referred to as "Shrinky Dinks". I've worked with shrink plastic before, but this was different than past projects. There are a lot of pieces to drawn, shrink and attach, but it was worth it for a pair of great anatomical skeleton earrings. These are about 8 inches long, which was longer than planned, but they are fabulous. If you would like to make a pair of these, other jewelry, or scrap-booking charms using shrink plastic, see tutorial.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook

Skull Earrings

Sarah S. is here today to display these delightful skull earrings she made. "This is a pair of earrings I sculpted and painted. It's my own take on a Dias de los Muertos design."

Hanging skulls on lobes,
celebrating those who past,
with white, toothy grins.

These have to be some of the cutest little skulls out there, Sarah. Great work on the details. I know that our new editor Azurafae will be a big fan of them as well as a lot of others.

At the time that Sarah submitted these they were for sale at her Etsy store, but unfortunately they have sold since then. Maybe she'll make more if some of you ask her nicely enough. Maybe.....

Earring Skulls...Skearrings???

Paula Dunlop comes up big from Down Under with this sweet set of skull earrings. She writes, "Attached is an image of some earrings I made a little while back, as part of a costume for a friend's dia de los muertos party. I also made a few other decorations, as well as a puppet - you can see it all here".

My favorite part is the flesh and guts beads that you added at the bottom. Great detail makes for great art. I'd say you have an ear for it...or two. Thanks, Paula! The puppet you made was excellent as well.
