FaceOff: Skull Appreciation Day 2013

I'm very excited to announce the details of this year's celebration of Skull Appreciation Day!

Skull-A-Day and Street Anatomy have joined forces to bring together the greatest collection of skull art, to celebrate the 3rd Annual Skull Appreciation Day! The resulting exhibition of skull inspired art works co-curated by Noah Scalin and Vanessa Ruiz will be on view at the International Museum of Surgical Science, in Chicago May 31 - December 31, 2013.

Featuring

In addition to showing their existing work, each artist has been asked to complete a frontal view of a skull in their own style using a template we provided. These skulls will then be split apart (digitally) and combined with other artist’s skulls to create a dynamic and unique collection of skull art prints. Each skull will be comprised of the work of two different artists, one from Skull-A-Day and one from Street Anatomy. At the end of the exhibition the respective skull halves will be brought together allowing us to see each artist’s complete skull piece. To kick it off, Vanessa and Noah have created their own original mash-up for the show poster!

The show opens with a reception on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5-9pm. Hope to see you there!

And stay tuned for more details on how you can participate even if you're not in the Chicago area!

March for Skulls! (April Fools 2012!)

After a successful event last year here in Richmond, Virginia we've decided it's time to go bigger with our campaign to have the skull receive it's proper recognition: with an official designation of Skull Appreciation Day as a national holiday!

And what better to way to get the attention we need for our cause than a march on Washington DC!?

Artist Rendering

Considering that 100% of the people in this country have a skull we think it's a no-brainer and we're sure to get a million or more people marching around the Downtown Mall shouting "Whose Skulls? Our Skulls!"

We've tentatively set the date for a year from today on April 1, 2013 so we have the proper time to work out all of the specifics. In the meantime we hope you'll mark your calendar and plan to attend.

Click to Download PDF

We are planning to produce some official signs that people can use while they are there (see above example), but we'd love to get your suggestions for what slogans to put on them. Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below and we'll choose our favorites to produce!

And we hope to see you all in Washington next year!

[UPDATE] APRIL FOOLS! Sorry, no march on Washington (or anywhere else) is in the works, but we hope you'll still celebrate your own Skull Appreciation Day this June 4th wherever you are. Us? We'll be at Philadelphia's Mütter Museum this year with an all day celebration/art exhibition! If you're in/near the area I hope you'll join us that day. More details soon.

Cabinet of Curiosities- June 25th, Asbury Park, NJ

New York/New Jersey friends please come out to this special event that we are co-producing with our good friend The Lady Aye...

Skull-A-Day & The Lady Aye Present

Cabinet of Curiosities
Burlesque Show & Art Opening

A ballyhoo, burly-q wunderkammer of the arts
June 25 at Asbury Lanes

On Saturday, June 25, The Lady Aye invites New Jersey audiences to step right up and gaze in wonder at the finest collection of strange girls and curious customs ever gathered under one roof. In addition to this display of anatomical wonders, patrons will be shocked and amazed as they gaze at a live demonstration of Skull-a-Day skills presented by the chief headhunter himself, noted artiste and educator, Noah Scalin.

This tempting ten-in-one of burlesque ballyhoo includes delights such as: Legs Malone as the shocking Miss Electra, Cassandra Rosebeetle with her shaking, shimmying dances from the exotic East, Bambi the Mermaid as God's mistake, The Lobster Girl, and Bunny Love as the What Is It?! All presented by noted talker, the flame-proof, pain-proof Lady Aye.

Plus, for just a slight extra charge, patrons are invited to purchase for their own home enjoyment one of the many works of art created by Prof. Scalin for just this occasion that will be on display throughout Asbury Lanes.

209 4th Avenue
Asbury Park, NJ 07712-6067
(732) 776-6160

The Lady Aye is a professional sideshow performer (rare double blockhead, fire eater, escapist, pain-proof girl, sword swallower, and grinder girl.) and MC, who has performed up and down the East Coast, been chosen as a finalist for Stoli Originals Casting Call competition, appeared on Discovery Channel's "Oddities" & the WB's "Gossip Girl", set records at Ripley's Believe It or Not, been hired for celebrity parties, opened for hot indie bands and created sold out shows for Coney Island USA. In addition, her press accolades include USA Today, Bust Magazine and the Village Voice's Best of NY issue in fall of 2006.
