Der Dackel Waldi Skull

Karen Kuttner is an Austrian painter of skulls who works with mixed media also. This piece is her favorite one titled "Der Dackel Waldi ist auch tot". She adds, "I hope you like my little dead dog!" Of course we would rather have a little live dog, but the way she has resurrected this dog and skull show is quite impressive. Thanks for sharing it, Karen!

A Suicide Skull Study

Shawn Burke is plying his artful hands to a mixed media base for some wonderful paintings including a few that feature our favorite subject.

"Suicide Skull"

"Skull Study"
The natural color selection that Shawn has chosen strengthens the realism dimension he achieved with both of these.  Each piece was created with different tools yet a similar effect is portrayed.  A great study of skulls indeed.  Thanks for the lesson, Shawn!

Dia de la Abby: #70 Skull Mail

Recently, Wenchkin and I decided to trade mail art. She made me this piece, so this is my art for her. It will be mailed off today.

I made this mixed media piece using water color paints, water color pencil, salt, ink, flower images from a gardening magazine, and thread, on water color paper. I wanted to do something reminiscent of the sugar skull and flower styles in past pieces, but with layers of patterns, mediums, and texture. To find out how I made this piece, read the tutorial.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  FacebookGoogle+ and/or Twitter.

Skull of Adam

Raye Mayo submitted her "latest skull painting, 'Adam.' Mixed media on board."

Most of you are probably familiar with the tale of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Eve tempted Adam into eating an apple from the tree of knowledge. Because of that act, they were both cast out of the garden by God. I suspect with the addition of the apple, and title of this piece, this is about that story. Creation stories exist in all religions. They have similarities. Some seem plausible and others seem more fantasy than reality. Regardless, they are meant to entertain us with stories of how life on Earth was created, because none of us truly know.

Richmond, VA Skulls

To get the countdown started with only 10 days left to Skull Appreciation Day a collection of Richmond, VA artists.

First up is Lindsey O'Hara who wrote: “I thought your website was so cool! I actually draw/paint skulls often.”

Next, Stacy DeFreitas Boyer said: “This is a mixed media piece...charcoal drawing with layered text and stitched skull titled ‘I hold my tension in my face’ .”

In addition, Robin Selby told us: “I saw these all over Italy, in cathedrals, paintings, sculpture. Even in St Peter's Cathedral. I am taking a drawing class and our last still life was a skull!! So I took a couple of liberties and made mine a Memento Mori.”

Finally, from Randy Toy who wrote: “Thought about you when I ran across this skull doodle I made on my ipod awhile back.

Skull Flower Bulb

Bnko made "a Skull bulb, or flower depending of your point of view".

I like this use of mixed media. There is a skull flower on the multi-tonal wood with the small vase sitting separate. The use of the pink, white and light grey against the hard canvas of the wood, balance the soft and hard of the piece. The glass, though a separate piece, looks almost painted on because it shares similar tones to the paint. To me it looks less like a flower and more like a pink poison has exploded in the lab of some mad scientist, causing a burn on the wooden cabinets. I wonder if this is a love or doom potion....MWAHAHAHA.

Super Skull Saturday (Mixed Media Style)

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is home to Paige Reynolds, a visual artist who tells us, "Most of my art is dark, surreal and macabre and I frequently use skulls in my artwork." Her mixed media designs consist of visual artwork, paintings, photography and visual effects. She's done a great job of filling today's post with some excellent images that are stunning and should not be missed by skull lovers everywhere.

"Skull Card" - 22" X 30" Mixed Media (Acrylics on canvas + Digital)

"Above Suspicion" - 8" X 10" Digital Paint

"Defrost" - 18" X 24" Mixed Media (Acrylics on canvas + Digital)

These are just 3 of the images Paige submitted and I must admit that I loved everything she sent us. Her site is filled with more of these macabre images that are dark, ghastly, creepy, and most of all- AWESOME! I think the "Skull Card" is my favorite. The King Of Skulls seems like a character that could trump any Ace and would make a fitting groom for the Queen of the Dead. Thanks for keeping it dark and bloody, Paige.

Mixed-Media Skull

The artist “BoneWerx” from Portland, OR said: “I have been enjoying your site for almost a year now and would like to make my first submissions! ”

This first piece is done using staples.

Next is a collage using found objects

Herringbone C says:

I really enjoy the Calavera series you are currently making, and the staple skull is also very good. Thank you for taking a minute and submitting your work with us.
