Distorted Skull

Jens Harder, from Berlin, Germany created this lovely anamorphic skull, a tribute to the classic one in the Hans Holbein the younger painting, for an upcoming book about the history of the Earth!

Simulacra Sunday - Round 11

Shelik discovered a couple of eerie skull simulacra. He says, "The Skull In Water pic happened thanks to my girlfriend and I hating to do the dishes. A bowl filled with water and leftover cupcake batter produced a haunting skull from the depths. We were both amazed.
The Skull Receipt was made from a Yoshinoya receipt and a lighter. This was totally accidental. I was bored after eating my beef bowl and thought I would have some fun with a lighter and the thermal paper on which the receipt was printed."...

Skull-A-Day The Book!

I am extremely happy to announce that SKULLS, the book based on the Skull-A-Day project published by Lark Books, will be officially in US stores the first week of October!


The book, which is dedicated to the fans of Skull-A-Day (yes you!), features 150 full-color images from first half of the project (it had to be completed in February to come out now!), including 4 DIY skulls with directions and a selection of fan skulls!

The handy seven inch square softcover book is already available online at all of the usual places: Amazon.com, Powells, Barnes & Noble, though I encourage you to order it from your local independent bookstore (if you still have one) which you can find via Indie Bound.

If you do buy it online, please take the time to leave a review, it will really help with promotion. And if you know anyone who can review the book for a publication, let me know and I'll make sure they get a copy!

Simulacra Sunday - Round 9

Kate Kelchner, a graduate student working in a nanofabrication lab at University of California, Santa Barbara, spotted these fellows using a scanning electron microscope! She says, "The 'skulls' are all less than 100 microns wide, or 1/10th of a millimeter. The patterns come from a photo-sensitive polymer that bubbles up around the edge of a sample.  A pattern is transferred to the polymer during a photolithography process, which is then transferred to the dielectric SiO2 layer underneath during a plasma etch process."

Sequin Skull

Taylor Hummel and Josh Coursey of Houston, Texas made this absolutely fantastic sequined skull! They say, "he's made out of a carved styrofoam wig head, sequins, sequin pins, some ribbon for his teeth, and glitter-glued craft store flowers. he's about the size of a real skull... if a real skull were cool enough to be covered in sequins, of course."
