Super Vintage Skull Saturday

Greetings, skull lovers! Let me be the first to wish you a Happy & Healthy 09/10/11. This may not make sense to those of you who put the day first, but I know we have super smart readers who can figure it out.

These killer old school skulls come from Johann Gosselet. No descriptions were given in the submission email, but these are all so cool that I can't let them be presented with some commentary(especially since I couldn't post them all).

We'll start by celebrating the 100th anniversary for the 1911 recipient of the
"Best Beard In The Cemetery" Award.

This has to be an illustration of a truly epic tale of skulls, love, & WAR!
Maybe "The"Romantic Crusades of the Neurocranium".

We all know that clowns and skulls are both creepy so
this is really making me freak out right now.

A speed freak until the end, Reginald Knievel, would begin a
family tradition that would last for generations.

A sacrifice made in the name of discovery.
A pioneer executed by exploration.

I had to save the best for last, or at least a favorite of most of us male types. Who wouldn't wanna play some strip poker with these ladies? Warning though, they have some SERIOUS poker faces.

Thanks for the retro start to our weekend, Johann. I really enjoy the historic and antique look of your works. They all have such character unique to themselves, but still look wonderful as a collection. These just prove the fact that "Old school rules!"

[Flashback Friday] 5.7- Historical Daredevil Skull

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Citizen Agent, Azurafae, and myself, Tatman, are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

Historical Daredevil Skull

I was recently thinking of this sweet piece or art from Dan Springer of Skulluxe. It's a great tribute to the daredveil motorcycle riders of the early days, more specifically Lillian La France.

I recently purchased my own two wheeled mode of transportation that I have found a new love for. Motorcycle riding is something I should have gotten into a looong time ago, but hey, better late than never. Still, I only enjoy a smooth comfortable ride and I'm too old for the daredevil ways that used to thrill me. That's probably a good thing. I'll leave those thrills to any of you adrenaline junkies out there who have the guts to to do the stunts. More power to ya!

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here.

Welded Nut Skull

There are custom built choppers made from unique parts and pieces out there, and then there are choppers literally made from parts and pieces. Josh Welton gets as original as they come with his custom built statues made from stuff found in most garages. The true artist in him revs the engine when he tig welds a custom skull light.

Josh writes, "This is the final sculpture in my Year of the Chopper project. You can read more about the project on my blog. The skull/headlight was tig welded on a nut. All 52 pieces are sold or are being sold for charity."

You really inspire me to get back into my garage and rummage around for skull art ideas, Josh. You do a great job of not only building these complex pieces, but you also manage to create style and grace with all of your choppers. I feel like I could really see this bike rolling down the highway, looking for adventure, in whatever comes it's way. Good luck with your charity sales, Josh.

If you would like to help Josh support his favorite charities then feel free to stop by his Etsy store to pick out a cutsom chopper statue of your own.

Historical Daredevil Skull

Our friend Dan Springer just turned me on to an awesome skull-related historical figure I knew nothing about: Lillian La France was a motorcycle riding daredevil in the 1920's who wore a nifty skull and crossbones sweater and was apparently one of the most popular female "Wall of Death" riders of her era!...

Dan was so inspired that he created this lovely illustration to honor her...

Check out more of Dan's awesome work on SKULLUXE. And find out more about Lillian La France on The Selvedge Yard.
