Skull Studded Jacket

Masayoshi Yoshino collaborated with leather artist Robert Warner, to create this jacket. Masayoshi made all the studs and buttons, totaling about 700 skulls. Robert is known for making custom leather jackets for rock stars. I love the texture all the skull studs and buttons great. Each one is finely detailed. It does remind me of the stacks of skulls in catacombs. You can see more photos of the jacket, here. I spied some other skull adornments on Masayoshi's Pinterest.

Buttons Skull

Simi Warah made this button skull for a fabric sketch book. I'm partial to any art involving sewing. This skull uses the variety of white buttons and tulle in a smart way to define the skull shape. A fabric sketch book isn't something I see often. You can see more of Simi's work on her blog, Buttons and Paint.

We want to share your skull art! Be a part of the Skull-A-Day project. Details are HERE.

[CONTEST] Win a SATURNS EP Prizepack

THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED! Thanks for participating!

SATURNS is an electro-pop band from Toronto, Canada. They have a 4 track EP featuring their brand of dreamscape music. Their mascot, which travels with them, is a giant pink skull. They want to share their music with the world. We're big fans of great music and skulls here at Skull-A-Day. To help share their music, they are giving away an EP Prizepack to one lucky Skull-A-Day fan!

The EP

A t-shirt

Buttons and Stickers

"SATURNS is Toronto cousins Lukas Cheung and Bryan Sutherland whose collective creativity emerged spontaneously over a weekend, days before moving out of a cat ridden house. Using two dysfunctional laptops and one broken synthesizer they sculpted beats late into the night and upon playback at sunrise, agreed to pursue the partnership -- both are allergic to cats.
Their melodic debut may disguise them as electro-pop but their lyrics spell a different story. The EP explores themes of dream travel and escapism in a fashion that sculpts a world entirely their own. The opening track DIAMONDE constructs a fantasy palace which lures those who lust after riches to their own demise. "Diamond doorsteps stay the same as the warriors decay, scriptures peeling off the walls, there's no echo in these halls". The Zen-like metaphors may leave some listeners scratching their heads, but the catchy melodies will balance out the experience."

You can find out what the band is up to on their Facebook and Twitter pages. You can hear their music on their BandcampLast FM, and YouTube.

You can also hear the EP here.

Reflective Skull

Cat Bruce from Scotland showed off this skull badge [pin] made with buttons, felt and reflective fabric.

Safety C says:

What a great way to incorporate a little safety with fashion.  I dabbled a little with the reflective material way back HERE, but never thought of using it to be the main focus of the design perhaps I need to revisit this material again in the future.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Button Skull

Karl Bentley showed off this button skull.  He said: "Love the site, love skulls"

Sewing C says:

Buttons are such a wonderful medium to work with, their diverse type, texture, color and shape make the possibilities endless on what can done with them. For example, the jagged edge of your skull magically turns into an illusion of a much smoother looking edge.  Thank you for sharing your work with us, and for more button skull inspiration, be sure to check out The Skullmaster's 288th skull from the original project.

[Flashback Friday] 5.42 - 288. Button Skull

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Tatman, Citizen Agent, and myself, Azurafae are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

288. Button Skull

[skull288.jpg]

This button skull is one of my favorites because of how playful it is. Buttons are something that many of us use daily to close our clothing. They are can be both decorative and practical. My daughter was given these buttons one day to play with, as we were meeting about the 1st Skull Appreciation Day. She was entertained by admiring their differences and making things with them. I have an extensive button collection, but my version of playing with them, is seeing what hair accessory or clothing I can use them for.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here. During year 4.0 the editors had their chance to countdown their favorites Azurafae HERE, Citizen Agent HERE, and Tatman HERE.

Dia de la Abby #57: Skull Buttons

Pin Pals is having a show. You have to register and make 5 button designs. Pin Pals will make the buttons. One of the buttons will be on display at Gallery 5 during September and sold to benefit Art 180. The other 4 will be distributed to other participants, which also means you will get 4 buttons from other artists. This is a simple project to get your creativity flowing.

After printing out the template on computer paper, I used a drawing pen and water color pencils to create the design. The artwork needs to be flexible enough to be molded into a button. Using pliable mediums like ink and thin paint, is the best for this project. I'm also excited to eventually get 4 art buttons back. I collect buttons and adorn my car sun visor with them, so these will be a unique addition.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  Facebook, Google+ and/or Twitter.

The Skull Quilt Project: Paper Cloth Skull

Jennifer Gorman of, Art Every Day, sent us this skull quilt block. Per her related post, this is made with "floral black base square topped with skull paper cloth, embellished with buttons". The textures and colors of it are more amazing in person. I'm still in awe of how she made this.

I'm enjoying seeing the variety of skulls, using different techniques. This project is definitely about experimenting with different mediums, that are applied to a 12"x12" cotton square. Leave 1 in around for seam allowance...this means you have 10"x10" of working room. Remember, these blocks are for art quilts, vs. the kind that keep you warm. They will be made to hang on walls. I'm looking forward to seeing more beautiful blocks.

If you would like to participate in this project, send your finished skull quilt squares to:

Skull-A-Day
PO Box 73236
Richmond, VA 23235

On a note sent with the piece, please include:
  • Your name
  • Your city, state and/or country
  • Your email...so I can tell you when yours arrives.

If you have any questions about the project, feel free to email me at abby@skulladay.com

The deadline for the skull blocks is Saturday, May 28, 2011, Skull Appreciation Day. We are currently working on a Richmond, VA event for this, which should have the quilts displayed. Afterwards, the quilts will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to Becky's Fund, which is an organization that helps victims of domestic violence.

Dia de la Abby #33: Zombie Attack Button Skull

My friends at Zombie Attack let me come over to make a skull out of their buttons.

As you can see, I used mostly buttons with a similar color palette. This was a bit difficult to do, as all the buttons are the same size, so it's not like fitting a puzzle together, like the Shell Skull was, but having a friend who lets me look up an anatomical skull for reference is really great. I don't know how many different buttons I used. I did buy a few to put on my car visors, which has many of their buttons. It's where I display my collection.

No tutorial for this one, as it is an arrangement skull, that just requires objects and time.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook.
