Teddy Bear Skull

Artist Stephanie Metz shared one of her amazing needle felted pieces: Ursulus lenis 4.5”x 6.75”x 5”, 2007. She says Ursulus lenis is her, "made-up Latin name for this particular species of teddy bear, which translates to genus 'Small bear' species 'smooth', so named for the source teddy."

I actually encountered her early on during my year of skull making and I think I was so impressed by how great her work was that I didn't even try doing a needle felted skull of my own! See more of her fantastic work HERE.

Are You A Space Pirate?

Hey folks, at long last I'm able to give you a sneak peek at my new project: League of Space Pirates!

Casual Skullday

My friend Phil Cheney brought my book SKULLS to his work and it inspired a round of creative skull making by he and his fellow employees! He says, "The tin-foil skull was done by Charity Newton an art student at Richard Bland when she is not working Full Time as the Senior Food Service Specialist..."


"...The candy skull was done by myself and is made from skull/bone shaped candy. The candy came from someone in another department who happened to bring it in today..."



"...The Willow Oak leaf skull was done by Sharon Denmark who is a poet by trade when she is not working part-time here as a Retail & Admissions Assistant."

[CONTEST UPDATE] Skull Tattoo Results!

Katrina in North Carolina got her tattoo! To recap Katrina asked Skull-A-Day readers to submit skull tattoo ideas for her and she would choose the winning one to get as an actual tattoo! The winner was Tim Phelps at Eternal Expressions Tattoo in Rome, Georgia and he and all of the participants are now being sent prizes from Katrina for their efforts!

As far as getting the tattoo done Katrina says, "Holy crap it hurt, it's in a different spot but my gosh I love it! Christy at Blue Flame Tattoo in Raleigh did some fabulous shading and added a bit more to it for a fuller look."...

Are You A Skull Fanatic?

As a new feature this year I've decided to do a periodic feature on you, yes you, the skull fans! If you want to be considered a "Skull Fanatic" send an image or two of your personal skull/skeleton collection and tell us a bit about what makes you so crazy for skulls, how many skulls you own, and whatever else you think is pertinent. As a test case, here's Jeremy, who just happened to share a nice use of my Skull Stencil as well a bit of his own collection...

"I'm from Prince George, British Columbia Canada, had a thing for skulls ever since i arranged all the dog cookies (shaped like bones) we had into a skeleton when i was like 6 years old (damn i wish i still had a pic of that). I used a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of printer paper, then I sprayed the skull on an old CPU tower that just kickin around my place, now a piece of art lol, as for total # of skulls...including string of skull lights....34...i even have a skull led tail light on my bicycle. I also made 2 of the skull papercrafts one on a harder cardboard backing the other on standard paper (standard paper worked better for the articulated jaw)."
