ARTmuffin's skulls (from the Book Of Gosh)

Sometimes the hardest part of being a Skull-A-Day editor is trying to decide which piece(s) of art to display from the submissions we get. Espcecially when any one artist decides to submit a whole handful of wonderful work. So, sometimes you just gotta say F*@k it and do what feels best(which is a pretty zen thing to do actually, thank you Sarah!) and post all of them. Today is an excellent case in point from ARTmuffin. These pieces are just a small assortment of what lies ahead for you to discover on his site. I'll let him tell you a little more, "My art is created with the concept of being pages from a lost book or temple from another culture in another dimension. The work is often human, alien, or animal anatomy with what appears to be a kind of hieroglyphic writing and symbolism accompanying the subject. The pages vary from anatomical description to ceremonial preparation to the preservation of a history. All pages are from 'The Book of Gosh'."

ARTmuffin hits it dead on the head for me. I love skulls, Geometry, ancient history, and mystery. He's got all of that going here as well as a myriad of other skullacious works that could fill a month's worth of posts for us. It's a great collection of awesome work. Plus, ARTmuffin is doing more awesome work by donating a portion of any of his sales to the charity of your choice.  He's letting your love of art go directly to helping others.  There's no better way to serve humanity while indulging into some fantastic skull art.  Thanks for sharing all of these, ARTmuffin!

Feathered Skull Ring

In case you were checking our site today to be blown away by some magnificent metal work then today is your lucky day. Vitor Costa of Hallandale, FL submitted this finely feathered skull ring that he made 20 years ago. The eyes are made of emeralds.

This beautiful ring takes it over the top worth the excellent emerald eyes. You can feel the essence of it's soul when you gaze into the gem filled sockets. This is awesome work, Vitor! Thanks for sharing it.

Dia de la Abby #58 - Feathered Skull

This skull was inspired by working on millinery recently.

If you don't know, I don't make only skulls. I make way more hair accessories. In the past year, I've taken up millinery, as a way to expand my skills. I've been hand sewing since I was a small child, so this wasn't a far reach of skill expanding, but it's a new application for my skills. I have a varied collection of feathers, but I've been working with black feathers recently. This is an arrangement of some of the black fluffy feathers. It's a bit reminiscent of Noah's 205. (Light As A) Feather Skull.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  Facebook, Google+ and/or Twitter.

Dia de la Abby #32: Quilt Block Inspiration Skull

This skull is for inspiration for a project we would love for you all the help with. In March 2010, I met a woman, Becky Lee, who runs Becky's Fund. She helps victims of domestic violence in many ways. Though I've been fortunate not to have been a victim of domestic violence, I have some very close friends that have. I wanted to do something to help prevent domestic violence. I decided to make quilts, auction them off and donate the funds to Becky's Fund.

I'm enlisting you all to help. I would like you all to make quilt blocks for us. They need to be 12" by 12" square. They must have a skull on it. You can use any materials you want. Think outside the box. This is an art quilt. For my inspiration piece, I used fabric, fabric flowers, sequins and feathers. Please leave 1" around free of decoration. I recommend using cotton fabric as a base. I will be sewing the blocks together to form multiple quilts. I will need to iron the seams flat, so I can quilt the blocks to the backing. I don't want your fabrics and decorations to melt when I iron the seams. Please include your name, current location (state, country, providence, city, etc.), and a good email for you. I plan on emailing each of you to let you know that we received your block.

This is a project that anyone of any skill level can do. Pass it along to your friends. It's an easy way to get involved in a great project. After you all have made your blocks, please mail them to us at:
Skull-A-Day
PO Box 73236
Richmond, VA 23235

We can't reimburse you for the shipping. I do recommend if you do this with a group, send them together. I know in the US, we can send thing in a flat rate box through the United States Postal Service. I used this type of shipping a lot and it cuts down on shipping costs. The boxes come in multiple sizes. The more blocks you ship together, the more money you save on shipping.

Details on the auction are in the works. I will definitely post those details when I have them, just in case any of you would like to purchase one.

If you have any questions about this project, please email me at abby@skulladay.com

I'll be posting reminders and updates as the project progresses. You all have until Saturday, May 28, 2011 to send us the blocks. This is one week before our Skull-A-Day anniversary and Skull Appreciation Day.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook.

[Flashback Friday] #205. (Light As A) Feather Skull

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Citizen Agent, Tatman, and myself, Azurafae, are taking turns counting down our personal favorite 17 skulls from the Original 365.25 Year. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

#10 - #205. (Light As A) Feather Skull

I chose this one for two reasons. One, yesterday was Thanksgiving, so this reminds me of the many turkeys that were consumed yesterday. A feather skull, seems appropriate. The other reason is that simply it's a beautiful and delicate piece. Feathers are temperamental to work with. I make fascinators and other hair accesories, where I use feathers. You might have lots of down on you when you are done, but you also have a beautiful delicate piece to be proud of. I like how Noah used the natural curves of the feathers to shape the skull details in the face. The side and back of the skull have a lumpy texture, but I've never seen a smooth skull, so this works well too. I have the sudden urge to break out the messy feathers and make more hair accessories. It's like Hermes for your head.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.o. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here.
