Anatomy of War: Match Skull

Another skull from my upcoming Anatomy of War exhibition opening this Wednesday at Krause Gallery in NYC. This one was made by arranging and burning matches directly on the work surface.

Burning, Rotting Corpse

This mixed media piece from Ed Preater came to us untitled, but I figured that the title of today's post pretty much summed it up.  Ed tells us that it's made from "matches to build the bones, epoxy clay, shiny beads, seashells, bits of colored glass. It’s about 2ft high."  It's also one of the most awesomely grotesque pieces of art that I've ever seen.  A vicious way for any person to meet their demise.  The Gods did not smile favorably upon this soul.  Thanks for making the rest of MY day look a lot better, and seriously, thanks for sharing your excellent work, Ed!

[Flashback Friday] #304 (Don't Play With) Matches Skull

13. #304 (Don't Play With) Matches Skull





It would be my assumption that people who like skulls(like me) also like similar things(like fire). I've been a long time believer that you can't go wrong with skulls and flames, just ask Ghost Rider. With that said, let me quote the dimwit Beavis when I say, "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE IS COOL!" Noah got it right with this combination. I'm sure a skull of fire came up as an idea somewhere in the brainstorming stages of the original year, and Noah came up with a great way to acheive the look with the matches. 304. (Don't Play With) Matches Skull

Arranged Matches, Unlit and Lit (16in x 24in [41cm x 61cm]). Hey kids DO NOT try this at home, seriously! This was done on the cement floor of my well ventilated garage (though I still ended up smelling like burnt wood), with a fire extinguisher at the ready. The red paint visible underneath the last image is actually from one of the attempts at this skull. I shot some footage of this as well, which I'll eventually edit and put online. And remember...
