Buckyball Skull

Long time Skull-A-Day friend, Jay Butler from Richmond, VA made this. He explains, "Fiddling at me desk with these magnetic steel balls called Buckyballs.  Slammed 'em down and the attached arrangement arose!"

I've always liked these type of magnetic balls since the first time I saw them at the Science Museum of Virginia (here in Richmond). They are lots of fun to play with. I used to fiddle with them at my desk instead of doing my homework...which is sort of like Jay fiddling with them at his desk and not doing work. I could never get them to make a necklace or bracelet...maybe one day.

Tom & Frances Fraser in Australia told us “My husband spotted this skull on our driveway after we had been cleaning. We're both big fans of your site, so we're happy to be able to add our own skull.”
Katie Morrill Fontenot wrote: “This unexpected find came while mopping the kitchen floor. I had been gone and the puppies have their own door to the back yard. ”

Recycled Skull-eton

Jay Butler in Richmond, VA wrote: “My son's SKELETON art project that was turned in this morning. This guy is made from all recycled items such as a milk jug, a spackle bucket top, old PVC pipes, old wooden toys and blocks, old wooden thread spools, and a waste bucket.”

You know I have a soft spot for up-cycling found objects into art, but this is truly a masterpiece. It is absolutely amazing what you were able to accomplish with the materials you acquired. I had a good time going down your list and trying to find where they were in the art. I wonder if there are more to be made in the future. I would love to see a series of them that show off the uniqueness of what you were able to find that time around. Thank you for submitting such an incredible piece of work.

Ken & Heather found this one walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. He wrote: “I am a big fan and probably visit the Skull-a-Day site four times a week or so. I love the seeing the stuff that you share from all over the world. It is amazing to me that so much creativity can surround one single object. I enjoy it all, from the jewelry and crafts to the doodles and the skull images found in the oddest of places. I will be sure to share more simuilacrums as they pop up. You never know what you'll see when you keep your eyes open.”
