Skulls of Stones

Alexis Karl, creates amazing skulls using a variety of stones and naturally found elements. The 1st is "Genus Rose Quartz", made of Quartz, himalayan sea salt, rose quartz, sellinite, marble powder, and resin. The 2nd is "Genus Mahagony Obsidian", made of Mahagony obsidian, jasper, smoky quartz, onyx, resin, and red earth. The 3rd is "Genus Open Jaw", made of Quartz, sellinite,marble powder, and resin. The skulls are part of "Hybridas Morte: Artifact From Tomb of Forgotten Reliquaries", which is currently on display at Warehouse 623 gallery in NYC.

Crystal "Clear" Skull

Bart DeKeyzer created this skull and image to remind us that hindsight is 20/20, as long as we have eyes to see that.

Okay, maybe that wasn't Bart's message in all of this, but I thought it sounded pretty good. It's always clearer at the end when you can reflect and hopefully learn from what you just experienced. Jeweled Skulls

Artist Joanne Davidson from Aberdeenshire, Scotland told us: “I wanted to learn how to cast with resin and after a few practices with resin and marble powder I realised how much like bone it came
out, no surprises that a skull would be the next thing I created.  I then sculptured a skull from terracotta clay and took a silicone cast of it.”



Joanne continued: “I love pointillism and monotony so casting plain skulls soon became mundane, I needed something a bit more challenging and like other artists out there I wanted to try the Damien Hirst Jeweled Skull. Using 5000 4mm rhinestones and 20 hours later I finally completed the skull.”
 

She went on: “Having now made quite few plain Jeweled ones I thought I'd try them with colours. The results were great, so I moved to do a little more complicated one. The leopard print one took a bit longer to do than the plain ones, but I loved doing it.”

Ceramic and Crystal Skull

Erin Finney from Chicago, IL made this skull and shared it with us. She describes it as (from her Etsy listing) "This is a ceramic skull that has been over laid with several black and cream semi translucent patterns. It has beautiful purple, red, and teal Swarovski crystal detail. It measures appox. 9" x 7" x 7"h."

With the print on this, I thought it was made of fabric. I had to go look at her Etsy listing to see what it was made of. I'm not sure if the pattern is made with paint or printed paper, but either it works very well with the shape of the ceramic skull. The carefully laid colorful crystals look like little flower buds along the vine and fern like pattern. Since I originally thought this was made of fabric and stuffed, I pondered if the mouth was a zipper and that it would be an awesome purse. Since it's ceramic, I want to put glass vials in the eyes for flowers and use it as a beautiful vase.

In Erin's submission, she suggested we have a Skull Appreciation Day in Chicago. This might good place for next year maybe. We have chosen a different place for this year's Skull Appreciation Day, on June 4th, 2012. It's not going to be in Richmond, VA this year. It's going to be somewhere farther North, but I can't tell you yet... See what I did there...

Rhinestone Skull Mask

Long time fan of the site, Kathleen Conahan in Portland Oregon told us: “This last year for Halloween I decided to combine my love of skulls and everything shiny, so I was Damien Hirst's ‘For the Love of God.’ Did you know you can buy rhinestones by the pound?”

Aged Skull Earrings

Jodie Vieira, of JoMarie Jewelry, submitted these earrings. She explains "I'm a jewelry designer from Nashville, TN and I saw a speech Noah Scalin did for Etsy about generating creativity.  It inspired me to embark on a project of my own where I create a new pair of earrings every day for 100 days, because Noah inspired me I wanted to pay homage to his Skull-a-Day by making some skull earrings.  I've attached a picture of the earrings I created, they were hand sawed out of sterling silver and aged with a heat treatment, and then adorned with swarovski crystals."

I love jewelry and of course skulls. I have multiple ear piercings. I have a seen a lot of skull earrings. I have a few pairs myself. This featured pair is one of my favorites that I have seen. I like the aged and discolored appearance of the metal, from being heated. The crystals pick up those color variations well. The style is a nice take on a traditional skull and crossed bones design. They are a good size to stand out, but not be heavy on the lobe. Too many great earrings are too heavy for my ears, which causes uncomfortable stretching. These don't look like they would, which is very nice.
