In Memory...

The sister of a good friend of this project committed suicide this weekend. In her memory I am asking people that have been inspired by the Skull-A-Day project consider joining me in donating to a suicide prevention organization of your choice. Two that come highly recommended are SPAN USA and the Kristin Brooks Hope Center.

And more importantly if you (or someone you know) is in emotional distress, please call the Hopeline for help and support 24 hours a day: 1.800.SUICIDE

Fan Request: Skull Wedding

Hey folks, I got a note from a fan who's looking for some help with her wedding plans and I though maybe you would have some good suggestions. She says:
"my name is jen and i love skulls. i recently came across your book at barnes and noble and fell in love with it! i am getting married next summer and i was wondering if you having any skull wedding ideas? i want to incorporate skulls yet not have anything look halloween-ish... i'm thinking subtle, elegant, yet bad-ass skulls."
Leave your suggestions for Jen in the comments to this post and hopefully she'll send in some pictures of the results...

Skull-A-Day 2.0: Update

Hey folks, as we near the end of the first month of Skull-A-Day 2.0 I thought I'd check in with you all and give you an update of things here at Skull Central. I've received nearly 200 submissions for 2.0, since I started asking for them in mid-April! I thought it might slow down, but right now I'm still getting an average of 3-4 submissions every day! As long as they follow the rules and are in focus(!) I generally post everything I get, which has led to a problem...I've got nearly enough for half a year already and the ones I'm receiving today won't get posted for many months! I'm trying to decide how to remedy this situation (be more picky about posting, post more a day, have jumbo posts on the weekends), but I'm not sure what to do. I'm open to suggestions here, so feel free to let me know what you'd prefer to see.

Thanks again for all of your support. I'll be posting some updates of old skulls and letting you know about book news as it comes so keep checking back and telling your friends about the site!

Just 5 Words!

So I'm heading up to NYC soon to go to the Webby Awards (thanks again!) and if you didn't know, part of the deal is that I get to make an acceptance speech, but it can only be five words long! I've got some idea of what I'll say, but I'd love to hear what you would say. Post your five word speech as a comment, and who knows if it's better than what I have in mind maybe I'll use it!

Last Days

There are still several big ideas that I'd like to get done in the last 100 days of the project (which officially begins on February 24th!). If you can help with one of the following please drop me a line...

Do you own/rent billboard space?

Do you have access to the lights in a large building with many windows?

Do you manage/teach/coordinate a large group of people [100+, the more the better] (i.e. a big class of students)?

It would be helpful if you are on the East Coast of the United States, but I will travel further afield if need be.

Midterm!

With today's post I've crossed the halfway mark on this project!

I've got big ideas for some of the remaining skulls, but I'm afraid I might not get 'em done without some help, so that's where you come in. I'll post these ideas periodically and see if any of you have the connections to help them become a reality. Helpers will definitely get some special Skull-A-Day treats to make it worth you while. So here are the first few to get us rolling...

1. Do you have access to X-ray or CAT Scan equipment (or something equivalent) and don't mind donating a scan to art? *To clarify I'd like to get a scan of my own head, but I'm not opposed to making something out of your x-rays as well!

2. Do you have access to the light switches in a tall office-type building and don't mind freaking out the neighbors for a night?

3. Are you in charge of a marching band and up for making art?

I will travel to make these happen, so don't hesitate to let me know even if you're not in my neck of the woods.

Thanks!
