Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.43

Colin Kilpatric is a great skull hunter. He found one on the side of a garbage truck. At convenience store in Santa Barbara, CA, he found some on food packaging. With a little searching, I found out it's the N'Joy Gourmet Oatmeal Kit in Crunchy Nut. If you've found a simulacra skull, please submit it to us. We love sharing what our skull hunters find!

If you are having trouble locating the skull, I've cropped it for you.

[BONUS] Skull Stencils In Use

Over the past few months, lots of you all have been submitting In Use photos of Noah's stencils. Here is a round up of those submission.

Antti Siitari from Finland, used the #9 Skull Stencil on the amp for an electric guitar.

Marty Busch also used the #9 Skull Stencil. He explained, "I've used the skull stencil on a lot of stuff, really killer stencil! But last month (June 2012) I used it among other stuff on the doors of my '49 Ford F-1 pickup. Built it from scratch... Used the skull, with the lettering on one, used same but different stencil for star - it's all spray paint. Took about 3 hours with an xacto knife to cut both out, but check it out! Turned out good."

Russell Jones used the #9 Skull Stencil on a t-shirt. He "took a short class in screen printing and here is a couple of photos of one of the t-shirts I made.  Kind of prototype at the moment but I think they came out ok."

Avery Dennis used multiple stencils to decorate a skateboard (skullboard?). He used the #9 Skull Stencil, #232 Stylized Stencil Skull, and #38. Quoth the Skull cut out.

Jessica Boudreaux used the #232 Stylized Stencil Skull to adorn a t-shirt.

Stacy Asher, Wisconsin said, "I loved the 'I Heart Skulls' stencil (Skull Appreciation Day Stencil) that you put out over the summer. I had been looking for the perfect place to put it when I realized that I could combine my 2 favorite things. Making quilts and collecting skulls. So this was my result."

We love seeing how you all use the Free Stuff that is available on Skull-A-Day. As you can see, there is always a great variety of ways to use the different skulls we offer. If you have made something using any of the Free Stuff skulls, please submit it to us!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.31

Today's skulls were found by Noah and I.

Noah said he "Found this happy guy when I was having a quiet moment in one of the lovely gazebos in my favorite place in Richmond: Maymont."

While traveling one day, I spotted this skull like logo on the back of a big rig truck.

While at Noah's house for band practice, I notice this skull on his rug. I lightened the photo, so the skull was easier to see.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

The next one was picked up by Stéphane from Montreal, Quebec.

and our last participant was picked up by Dave Silvaon on “a Dark desert highway somewhere past San Diego and near the Cali/Mexico border. We Caught this Smilin' Skull headlight cast on the Hwy as we ventured to our desert campground.”

R/C Skull Truck

Will C. from Las Vegas, NV said: “I was inspired by the skull-a-day site when I built and painted my r/c truck even the body posts are skulls holding the lexan body down.”

Family C says:

It looks like I found someone else who may be at the reunion this summer. What an impressive vehicle you have constructed. It is such an honor to hear when a site that I assist with inspires someone to do something creative. I like the paint job very much, it was interesting to see your use of different styles of skulls in the motif. Thank you for sending us your work and best of luck racing (if you run that circuit). I hear the odds are 2:5 that you will have the coolest truck there.

Super Saturday Skull Fest

Well, Skull-A-Day readers, this all started out innocently enough, but after a few emails back and forth it has gone full blown Skullmageddon! This is definitely not the norm for Skull-A-Day so please enjoy all of the pics. Hopefully it won't overload your skull.

Instigator and craftivist, Carrie Reichardt (aka The Baroness) has set out to cover London with all of her wonderful works. The first glimpse we got of her awesomeness came in the form of the "Tiki Love Truck". Carrie, Mr. Spunky, and the treatment Rooms Crew took what was a boring old truck and turned it into a rolling work of art that is still legally drivable.

In case you're wondering where she gets her skull tiles for the sweet mosaics- she makes them herself.

The mosaics can be seen at various locations in London covering entire walls of buildings. These skulls are the centerpiece of a mosaic wall mural titled "The Revolution Will Be Ceramicised".

Carrie also does a lot of work in ceramics including decorating them with transfers and adding her own skull touches to them. Currently she is helping to curate a show called "Renegade Potters and Extreme Craft" at the Ink-d gallery in Brighton, UK. It's running from March 12th-April 14th. She recently opened an Etsy shop for any of you who might be interested in purchasing something from the "Renegade Potter".

And last, but definitely not least Carrie is working on a beautiful elephant that I will let her tell you more about. "I am also very busy covering a huge resin elephant in mosaics. I am working with Nick Reynolds, and it is going to be part of the Elephant Parade , London in May. Nick has in fact, cut away half of the elephants head, and is setting back in a skeleton and I am making a foot bracelet in ceramic skulls to go round one of its feet. This event is being billed as the biggest ever public art event, when over 250 decorated elephants are exhibited around London in May. Further details can be found at Elephant Parade London 2010."

You can see a short video here that scratches the surface of the making of "Phoolan".

So in conclusion, thank you to Carrie and all of her crew for bringing us some of London's best skull makers. The art you do and the message you send is taking skull art a long way, and Skull-A-Day will be forever grateful for the creators like you.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 3.14

Another Sunday with Skull-A-Day finds us on the road again chasing down the skulls that surround us everyday.

First up is this 18 wheeler skull found by Sherry & John

Carol Feiner found this guy on Highway 101 south of San Francisco

And Meir from Tel Aviv,Israel found another cloud formation

Thanks to you all for these finds. Please be careful if you are skull hunting and driving at the same time. No simulacra is worth the price of you crashing your vehicle and putting your life at risk.

To all of you skull hunters out there, keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.
