[Flashback Friday] Noah's Choice
Now that we've seen the top 17 favorites of my original 365 skulls from Citizen Agent, Abby, and Tatman it was decided that I would do the first Flashback Friday of year 5.0.
I'm frequently asked what is my favorite skull, and that's a really tough thing for me to answer. Realistically I just enjoyed the experience of making them and my favorite was always the one I was going to make next. That said there are several that I particularly liked because of the specific experiences around them. Since the co-editors have actually already shown many of those, I though I'd pick a few that haven't been showcased yet to share a bit about...
357. Nude (but Safe for Work) Skull
I knew I wanted to do this for a while, but the logistics of it were daunting, so I waited til near the end to figure it out. I had initially wanted about 8-10 people to use in it, but on the day of the shoot none of the people that I enlisted showed up! Luckily I had two friends that had asked if they could come along at the last minute and so I ended up just working with the two of them. It made the shoot way more difficult since I really needed more people to make anything vaguely resembling a skull. The solution was to have them do two poses which I would put together in Photoshop later. Of course I didn't have my computer with me during the shoot so I just had to hope that they would actually work out. Luckily the image came together in the end. I particularly was happy that it's very different from Salvador Dali's well-known skull made of nudes.
329. Skull Ray
I knew I couldn't end the project without using my own skull at some point. I had no idea how I was going to be able to get an x-ray done though. And then at a party a friend of a friend revealed that they taught medical students how to use x-ray machines! Of course I immediately asked if they would be willing to x-ray my own head and astonishingly they said yes. We went after hours to the building, which was pretty eerie and I lay on the x-ray table (after doing a few tests with a special acrylic encased skull first) in my street clothes, which is definitely an odd experience. I wanted to include a prop to make it clear that this was really a one-of-a-kind x-ray and not just something I found. I actually taped an opossum skull (which I had gleaned myself from one that died in my backyard) to the side of my head to get this to work. I display it with an actual hospital lightbox, which is currently on the piano in my living room.
314. Skullevision
My friend Carol, who was a big supporter of the project (and actually provided the wall for another day's project) gave me this TV figuring I could do something with it. I loved the fact that it actually still worked so I decided to paint directly on the screen with acrylic and allow the image to show through when it's turned on. This is one piece you really have to see in person, it's incredibly captivating and every show is interesting. I've had it on (with the volume turned down) at parties and people can't tear their eyes away from it. I highly recommend you do this to your own television set.
101. Tattoo Skull, Self-Inflicted
After finishing my first 100 skulls I knew I had to do something big to celebrate the achievement. I don't remember how I came up with the idea to tattoo myself, but once I thought of it, I knew I had to do it. Luckily a friend who is a professional tattoo artist let me use their equipment and helped me with the process (including requiring me to wear latex gloves... in case I contaminated myself?). It didn't hurt at all and I was actually a bit surprised how easy it was to do. I'm very tempted to do this again. The best compliment I got was that the tattoo artist was impressed with how well I did on my first try and said that I could definitely be an apprentice if I ever wanted to start a new career! I love the fact that this is permanently a part of my body and a wonderful reminder of my crazy year.
So what are your favorites from year 1.0 of Skull-A-Day and why?

[BONUS Flashback Friday] Abby's Favorites
I'm doing one last Flashback to the original 365 skulls to welcome Abby, our newest editor, to the Skull-A-Day fold! She told me about three of her favorites that didn't make the original Flashback Friday series so here they are...
60. Flower Skull
This one actually ended up on the cover of Poetry Magazine!
109. Jumbo Lace Skull
You can actually see this one being made in a nifty video the folks at Etsy made HERE.
205. (Light As A) Feather Skull
The title comes from the party game "Light As A Feather, Stiff As A Board", as well as the title of a very catchy song by the Lunachicks, which I had in my head as I was making it!

[Flashback Friday #1] 66. Sparkler Skull
Flashback Friday has been a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I've been posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, and to mark the last week of year 3 of the project here at last is the #1 favorite skull...
66. Sparkler Skull
I spent a warm summer evening with my girlfriend on a grassy patch, outside of the pool I belong to, making these for an hour or two. It took about twenty tries to get about four decent looking ones of which this was my favorite. I had my camera on a tripod and most of the exposures took 6-7 seconds.
Here's what it looks like when the sparkler goes out sooner than you expect...
So if this wasn't your favorite of my original 365 skulls, what would have you made as number one?

[Flashback Friday TOP 5] 349. Secret Skull Wallpaper
Flashback Friday is a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I'll be posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3 of the project...
#2: 349. Secret Skull Wallpaper
My friends Carol and Dave kindly offered a wall in their house (in their utility room actually) to do with as I saw fit and so I decided they needed some wallpaper. They painted the wall in advance and then I came in with my stencils and a lot of gold spray paint. As with all of my stencils this one is available as a Creative Commons licensed FREE downloadable PDF to do with as you like HERE. Here's a bathroom where it was used already! Please do send along anything you do with it so I can share it on the site as well.

Flashback Friday is a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I'll be posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3 of the project...
#3: 222. Rorschach Skull
I considered making this one from actual ink, but after a few tests, switched over to creating it digitally using photos I'd taken of a plastic skull which served as the model for many of my pieces. My favorite outcome of this piece was to find out it had been tattooed on a fan of the project!
p.s. To see what else you can do with ink blots (and even spot another skull one) check out this video for Gnarls Barkley's Crazy.

Flashback Friday is a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I'll be posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3 of the project...
#4: 25. Introducing The Skoon (skull + spoon)
I have to admit I was a bit surprised this one made the top 5, not that I don't like it, just that it was done fairly crudely. I had hopes that one day I'd get back to it and make a much nicer one, but two much better versions of it were made by fans of the site before I got around to it, so I'm happy to have theirs share the spotlight...
The USMC Skulz made their own spoon skull and then set it on fire!...
And then Pinky Diablo made these seriously gorgeous ones out of vintage silverware!...
Perhaps one day everyone will have a special section in their silverware drawer for a Skoon!

#5: 72. Papercraft Skull (with Articulated Jaw)
One of my favorite parts of this project has been seeing what happens when you give things away for free! Not only have people clearly had a lot of fun downloading & making their own, but I've been entertained and inspired seeing where my work has gone! To join in the fun download a PDF for yourself by clicking the image below or going HERE...

Or for a blank version click on the image below or go HERE.

.
And to see what the finished skull looks like in action here's a video I just found online!...
And finally here's a tribute to the great opera singer Pavarotti, that was made for him shortly after his death by Daniele...
As always, if you make something yourself please send it in so we can share it with the other Skull-A-Day fans!

#6: 46. Soy Sauce Skull
I cook a lot with soy sauce so it makes sense that it would eventually end up as part of the project. I also use chopsticks a lot so they were my go to tool for arranging things, though obviously it made perfect sense to use them on this one. This skull was actually trickier than it seemed, since the plate wasn't perfectly flat and if I moved away for a moment to set the camera up the image would change and so I had to remake it a few times before finally getting the shot I wanted.

I really didn't know what I was going to make this day and then I noticed the plastic bag just sitting on a chair and realized the opening for the handles would make great eyes! Like many things in the project there was a lot of serendipity involved!

#8: 10. United Skull of America
It was only when I finished this that I thought about the fact that I had used a map of the continental US only and had left out Alaska & Hawaii. I felt pretty bad about it, but in the midst of the project I didn't have the time to return to it and try again with all 50 states. Finally last year I free moment and set to the task, and lo and behold I think the results were even better, go figure!...
This version is available as a limited edition silkscreen poster.
I even made a 9 foot tall wooden version of the original skull for my exhibition: After Life, that was at Quirk Gallery in Richmond, Virginia...
I plan on one day making the revised skull that way as well! So if you're interested in having an installation of the full 50 states as a skull in your museum, school, office, or gallery please get in touch!

#9: 14. Cutest Skull Ever
This was inspired by Japanese cartoons & toys in an effort to make the closest thing to a cuddly skull I could think of. Little did I know that cuddly skull animals would actually become a reality! Here's a blue version I never posted that I made specifically for a friend of mine who wanted to contribute it to a baby quilt!...

#10: 192. Ornament(al) Skull
I had no idea when I was making this one how popular it would be. In fact this image was actually used without my permission and sold on T-shirts at a major retailer! Luckily a fan in Texas discovered the shirt and with his help and the help of my lawyer I was able to resolve the situation positively. I displayed the documents related to the case at my exhibition After Life and you can spot a bit of bootleg shirt in this photo.

#11: 126. Stained Glass Skull
I specifically took a two-day class on stained glass making to learn how to do this one. Luckily the teacher was a friend of mine because this went well beyond the parameters of her beginners class (including doubling the maximum number of pieces we were supposed to work with)! The process was made even harder by the fact that the milky glass I chose is actually harder to cut than regular colored glass. The piece is back lit by the sun in the above photo, but you can also see what it looks like lit from the front in the original post.

#12:129. Skull of Bones
I'm surprised it took me so long into the project to think of this one, it seems so obvious! I ordered a random assortment of artificial bones from a medical supply company and had no idea what I'd have to work with. It's actually just around 50% of a nearly complete skeleton, minus the skull of course!

This was the third piece I'd created for the project and the one that most of my friends saw first since I didn't announce the existence of the site to anyone until that day. The reason I chose this specific cassette was it was the first white one I encountered when I was looking through my old tapes in the basement!

As the project neared its end, I started doing a lot more collaborative skulls. In this case I'd been talking with my friends at my favorite local sushi & tater tot restaurant about the project for a while and they kindly offered to let me come in and play in the kitchen with their ingredients! Check out the original post to see the skulls that my friends who were working there made while I was making mine. Sadly this hasn't become a regular item on the menu.

#15: 268. Skull Island
I love maps, so it seemed an obvious choice to make one of a Skull Island. Of course any good map needs place names on it. I decided to made things in tribute to some of my dedicated friends, fans, and fellow bloggers. You might recognize a few names on there, though it seems like it might be time to make an updated version with some of my new pals. Maybe a print of this is in order, would you be interested in one?

This is actually the style my doodles tend to take when I'm unconsciously scribbling on a piece of paper, though admittedly I'd never made one this extensive or in a specific shape before!
And yes, this is just one line. Can you find the beginning and end points?

#17: 310. Googly Eye Skull
This was one of those skulls that came about because I was scouring the craft store for materials to work with and was on the lookout for large quantities of small objects that were inexpensive. I first made it without eyes in the sockets (which you can see on the original post), but clearly it cried out for its own googly eyes!
