Oddly, polystyrene is quite recyclable: it sublimes, and can then be re-polymerized, even up-cycled into ABS if you're willing to do some distillation of the styrene that sublimes away.
It's just too cheap for anyone to bother right now. But peak oil should make PS recycling much more profitable.
