Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.33

Tim Andrew of The Rave 'N' Iron, "took this photo this summer while hiking with some friends at The Pinnacles in B.C., Canada."

Keep sending those pictures in, we always love seeing what our skull hunters find. Anyone is welcomed to participate, it's fun and it's easy. If you see a simulacra skull, photograph it and send those pictures in to our submissions address with a little something about what it is really and maybe a little about you.

[BONUS] Escape to Skeletube Mountain

Recently I spent a few days in the mountains and three of my Skeletubes decided to come along as well. Here are a few pix I took of their forest explorations...

[BONUS] 384. Mountain Retreat Skull

I spent a long weekend at a beautiful modern mountain cabin, and at the owners' request created a temporary skull on their property...

It was a gray and rainy day, but not too cold or wet to spend a few hours arranging leaves on a hillside below the house (you can see the house in the middle to the right).  Good thing I did it when I did, since the next day was bitter cold and windy and I doubt I would've gotten much done that day!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 3.50

As skull lovers we all know how bones can resemble stones and today's submitters are here to prove it.

First up is Diane who sent us this great looking rock. She writes, "Yesterday I found this awesome rock with a hidden skull face in it at an exhibit of bonsai and rock gardens, and thought immediately of your blog. I hope you like it!"

Next up is Josh Hartley who made a great discovery on a hike. "I saw this Skull rock, that before being buried, or as soon as the soil erodes was or will be a full skull rock. I thought it was quite interesting seeing as it was half buried and the spring flowers were coming up in front of it’s nose. Symbolic? Hey, they say we see what we want too. I will leave that up to you. The location of this photo is in the Alabama Hills, just west of Lone Pine, CA. and just East of Mt. Whitney. I like to call this one “Ole’ 1 eye has yet to show his face”"

And lastly Amanda Hicks brings us what might be one of the largest skull simulacra ever. She wonders, "if the people of Portland see it driving north on 205."

Thanks to all of you for catching these stone faced skulls and sending them in. It really makes me wonder if Mother Nature is trying to show us her rougher, tougher side with these. If any of the rest of you catch a skull or two on your next outdoor excursion then be sure to submit it. We love seeing what the great outdoors has to offer.

[Flashback Friday] 168. (Escape To) Skull Mountain

Flashback Friday is a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I'll be posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3 of the project...

#37: 168. (Escape To) Skull Mountain

After seeing the original Star Wars movie I became obsessed with becoming a special effects maker. I would buy model kits and then customize and photograph them. It was fun tapping back into that skill set to build this. The mountain is papier-mâché, the snow is cornstarch, the trees are moss used for train set models, the ground is sandpaper colored with pastels and the water is an old mirror. I took it to a local park so that I could shoot a photo with an unblocked sky in the background and actual sunlight on it. I guess it did the job since several people have thought this was an actual place.

UPDATE: This skull has been added to the Send-A-Skull application on Facebook.
