Halloween Skull Cake

Christie Medaglia from upstate New York, "made this skull cake for my son's Halloween party in school." She explained, "My son loves everything skulls. I found a copy of your book in his art teacher's class room tonight at open house, and had to go to your website."

I have fond memories of my mom making all sorts of awesome cakes for different events. However, she never made a skull cake...well I don't recall any skull cakes. I hope Christie's son's class enjoyed her deliciously spooky skull cake. Also, we love knowing how people find Skull-A-Day. I also found Skull-A-Day through one of Noah's books, "Skulls".

Birthday Skull

Cameron St.Gelais from Ormond Beach, FL created this Birthday Skull.

We all know that with each passing year, we grow older, and closer to death. However, there is still a lot of living to do before that day comes. Whether that day is next week, or 90 years from now, we don't know. Spend the unknown amount of time in between doing something you enjoy and celebrate your life, as if it was as amazing of a day to celebrate as the anniversary of your birth...your birthday.

Skull Scouts Party

Melissa Morrison, from Eureka, California, is a troop leader of Troop 202. If you aren't familiar with this troop, they are our Skull Scouts, with skull crests designed by Noah. They even participated in making skull quilt blocks for our quilt project last year. Like most people around Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, they had a party.

Troop mom, Karleen Price did the makeup.

The girls did normal Halloween activities and decorated sugar skulls, using skulls made from molds.

This is one group of very talented and festive ladies. The makeup that Karleen did is very soft and colorful. Pairing it with the hair flowers and Mexican style clothing helps complete the catrina costume. We don't normally post skulls made with assistance from commercial molds. However, the ones the girls made are so detailed, that I decided they deserved posting. This is one of the many the girls made.

It's not a SKULLS book release party until...

Last night was my SKULLS book release party at Fallout in Richmond, Virginia. The evening started out great, there were lots of fun skull-adorned folks and I signed a few books. However, just before it was time for me to judge the skull costume contest my friend dislocated her knee while dancing. We ended up having to take an ambulance ride to the emergency room at 2am. The funny thing is the ambulance driver had just read an article about my book and was very enthusiastic about Skull-A-Day and wanted to know all about it on the ride over! Of course everyone in the emergency room was amused to have a skeleton in their midst. If you're wondering, my friend is feeling OK, though her knee will take a few weeks to heal. I'll post pictures from the party once I get them.

Oh and her make-up is based on the fantastic work of Sylvia Ji.
