Newton's Skulls

Nicola Newton is a tattoo artist currently working in Bournemouth, England.  Her skulls are amazing, and I'm blown away with the softness she achieves with only a pencil.  Be sure to check out more of her skulls and awesomeness here.  Thanks for sharing, Nicola!!

Cybermechanical Skull

Simon Lejeune is a freelance illustrator, web and graphic designer based in Berlin Germany. He specializes in biomechanical, cyberpunk drawings that captivate your imagination.  This magnificent skull below is 21 x 29.7cm (8.26" x 11.69") and done with only a ballpoint pen on thick paper.  Shading, depth, and detail are all wonderfully present in his work.  Thanks for sharing your skull with us, Simon!

Dia de la Abby: #87 Scalin Family Portrait

Noah's daughter had a birthday recently. I was trying to think of a present to make or buy her. While flipping through my sketchbook one day, I came across the Skeleton Family Portrait I'd done for my own family. It dawned on me that this concept would be perfect for the little Scalin family. I included their three cats, since pets are furry family members. I drew this with pencil, inked it, and painted it with watercolors.

Blinded by Love? Skull

Today's skull is from Kayleigh Sparks of the UK. She submitted this for Valentine's Day, but unfortunately we did not get to it in time. Luckily, we show the love for skulls EVERYDAY here on Skull-A-Day so this is a perfect piece for any day of the year. Thanks for sharing the love with us, Kayleigh!

Sunset Wedding Skulls

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of these two skulls as well as the art of Mike Leemann. This fun drawing from Mike has me wondering if this couple will still include "til death do us part" in their vows. Either way, they are destined to spend an eternity together on paper. Thanks for the submission, Mike!

Dark Butterfly Skull

This drawing is from an artist known as 'Short Fuse Lies' located in The Netherlands. There is a lot of drama felt in this piece.  I can't help but think of a certain mid-90's song either.  One that carried a lot of drama with it as well.  Colorless and losing life, this skull is a grim reminder indeed.  Don't let life shoot you down.  Thanks for sharing your work with us, Lies.

Geometrical Skulls

This 2 for Tuesday is courtesy of Poohvis Thanathammakoon in New York.  I'm loving how these geometrical skulls are so well planned out.  I can't tell if I'm looking at a flow chart, a wiring schematic, or some sort of tribal decoration pattern, but regardless of what they look like I'm a fan.  Thanks for sharing these, Poohvis! See more on Tumblr & Instagram.

No Evil Skull Trio

Kayleigh Sparks aka Umeko, of Edinburgh, Scotland, drew these three skulls. She explained they are "a set of see (Mizaru), speak (Iwazaru) and hear (Kikazaru) no evil skulls." If you are familiar with the tale "Three Wise Monkeys", then you know where See, Speak, and Hear no evil comes from. I recall reading the tale when I was a child, and have always enjoyed seeing artwork inspired by it. There are various interpretations of the story's meaning. I like Kayleigh's variation with the censorship bars. There are certain "evils" in our culture we are commonly encouraged not to see, speak, or hear about, and these remind me of those.

Skeleton in the Furrows

Sarah Ménal of Nantes, France, drew this skeleton as part of a larger drawing in her "Terre de Sillons" series. I would have loved to see the larger drawing this segment is from, but I couldn't located it on her website. I do like that it's a little hidden gem among other whimsical designs.

Wallpaper Skull

No, I'm not talking about the kind of wallpaper for your desktop.  Sorry.  This elegant work of art comes from L.A.W. of Dundee, Scotland.  You might remember her awesome entry into our last stencil contest(see here).  This floral arrangement was done with pen on a wallpaper sample.  Thus the cycle of life continues to move on from one form of matter to another.  This sample piece was lucky enough to be transformed into something much more beautiful.  Thanks again for sharing your great work, L.A.W.!

Deer Skulls

Local Richmond, VA artist, Bizhan Khodabandeh, created this dear skull image. It is a pen and ink illustration that was digitally colored. If you live in Virginia, you are probably familiar with the symbolism of the cardinals and dogwood. I love how these elements are incorporated into the deer skull, along with details commonly found on our forest floors. I love the seamless blend of life and death...the cycle of our world. Visit his website, Mended Arrow, to see more of and purchase Bizhan's artwork.

Sharp Looking Sharpie Skull

Generally our submitters contribute their own works of art, but in this situation a proud parent gets to display their offspring's talent. Today's skull is a beautiful drawing by Christopher Ryan. His Dad, Tony Ryan, is about as proud as any pop can be of his son. Christopher hopes to entertain the world with his art some day, and if he continues to create more work of this caliber then I'm sure Tony will be first in line at Christopher's first gallery show. Thanks for sharing this super skull with us, Tony AND Christopher. Keep up the good work!

Grey Flowers Skull

Nathan Callender of South Carolina is the man behind the skull in this beautiful work.  It was done a few years ago by pen sketching and then scanning and converting to vector.  An elegant picture of diversity while using just a few colors.  Thanks for sharing it with us, Natahn!

Mask of a Skull

Raven Arbuckle is passionate about bones and skulls, and loves putting them her in artwork. We get a lot of human skulls submitted. Animal skulls are a rare treat. This is a beautiful combination of an animal skull with a human wearing it. This drawing is very mystical, and brings to mind stories of ancient ceremonies. With Solstice and Christmas happening soon, this ceremonial drawing seemed fitting.

Dia de la Abby: #85 La Calavera Catrina Doll

A few years ago, I started making a La Calavera Catrina doll. I crocheted the doll, but never finished decorating it. Last week, I starting participating in a 30 day drawing challenge. Today's challenge was "Dolls or Puppets", so it was the perfect time to play with finishing up my doll concept. I drew everything with a pencil, inked it, and used colored pencils. To see what other projects I'm working on, follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Crafty Lady Abby. To see the other 84 skulls I've created over the years, go here.

Microsoft Paint Skeleton

Sarah Ripley of Richmond, VA, made this skeleton using Microsoft Paint. I have to say, despite digital drawing technology being fantastic now, I still love playing with old school Microsoft Paint. Sometimes, I just turn on some music and doodle freely on it. However, none of my doodling has ever produced something as nice as Sarah's skeleton. It has such nice details and shape, that I wouldn't have known it was created on Microsoft Paint, if it wasn't for that pixeled haze around the lines! Hate when that happens no matter how many times it's corrected. I guess that's a reason to be thankful for better quality drawing programs.

Karith's Skulls

Karith is a Polish born artist currently working in Worthing, England.  She's a mixed media artist with a photographic background.  These two gems show her versatility from sculpting to drawing, as well as photographing each.  Variety is the spice of life, and we thank you for spicing up our day, Karith!

Hygienic Zombie Skull

Randall Ensley is a definite "been there, done that" contributor to our site, and he's back again with a new and different piece titled "Hygienic Zombie". This is a large 18" x 30" drawing on paper done with a technical pen.  The concentric circles are mesmerizing to say the least.  Thanks for sharing this entrancing smile with us, Randall!
