Potato Skull

Clay Kasserman was peeling this potato back on Halloween and noticed that he was really peeling A SKULL!

Normally skulls have meat on them, but this one has the potatoes instead, and now that I mentioned both of those I'm getting hungry. Thanks for the spud skull(and the munchies), Clay!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.12

It's time to feast again with our skull hunters for this week's round of yummy simulacra.

Killer Zombie Robot pondered whether it should be Skullapeño or Jalapeñskull when he "Found this guy baked into some cornbread. He was tasty."

This salty skull was found by Keltie in Kingston, Ontario who writes, "This is a potato chip skull that I found while eating some President's Choice Lemon Chicken chips. I offered it to my daughter after taking the picture but she started throwing chips on the floor so I ate it instead."

And to wash it all down Nicole Clak sent us this Japanese soda skull bottle and this note, "I had posted this picture on your FB page. I can't remember the brand name, but it is a Japanese soda that we get quite often. Instead of the pop top we are used to, there is a small marble sealed in the top, and you use the stopper provided to push the marble down into the neck of the bottle. This time though, when I turned the bottle to the side, I noticed it looked a lot like a skull!"

Thanks again to everyone for a tasty way to spend our Sunday. If you find yourself about to devour a skull in your food then snap a pic and send it to us before you get to digesting it.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.24

A little bit of Simulacra sustenance for you this week.

First up is Christina who returns to Skull-A-Day with this find: “I had finished a cup of Greek coffee and I wanted to read my fortune and here was the skull looking back at me.”

“LF” was also reading what his food was telling him: “Here is potato salad that was about to be thrown out, I noticed the skull and took a picture.”

Last is Sharkie from NZ who said: “I was eating deep fried tofu just now, when I stumbled upon your website. After browsing through, I looked at my tofu cube and saw some possible patterns!”

Cleo C says:

This is an excellent collection of simulacra that we can add to the ever growing collection. Christina, don't worry it was just telling you that one was finished and you needed a refill. LF, potato salad, IMHO, is always evil this just proves it. Sharkie, thanks for stumbling upon us. You have already caught the simulacra bug, don't worry it is not fatal it just looks that way.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

De patata de los muertos!

Peace Schuyler from Denver, Colorado sent us this: “This lil' potato never made it to my mouth with butter and sour creamy goodness, but as you can see it begged to be arted! A little gesso, sequins, and apparently some cat hair gave it it's moment of glory. After the photo op, however, the threat of flies and that black potato goo that you find in the bottom of the bag when you forgot you still had potatoes at the back of the cupboard ended the “patata de los muertos’ ” carefree life as a performance artist. We will always have these mem'ries.”

Before being Arted

Solanaceae C says:

It seems that for some reason potatoes and the season go hand in hand, but it is deeper than just the harvest connection, maybe this might explain it. I am so glad that you took some “mem'ries” because this is wonderful. After checking out the artwork at your link I know understand your skill of taking an object and artin’ it up to make something special. Thank you for submitting this work for us to share.

[BONUS UPDATE] The Fate of #262 (Alas, poor Mr.) Potato Skull

On February 20th my skull for the day was a carved potato: #262 (Alas, poor Mr.) Potato Skull

One day later I posted a picture of how it had aged:

In the intervening five months it has sat drying out in various places in my house, most recently on the mantle (along with a bunch of other skulls I haven't put into storage yet). It's only carved on the one side and I left the peel on the back side. That side started to grow a few eyes, but then dried out and sucked inward making it concave! Aside from some flaky pieces around the edges which are breaking off the majority of it is now rock solid (and about 2.5 x 2.5 in [6.35 x 6.335 cm])...
