[BONUS] 428. Coffee Skull

When the Skull-A-Day Facebook page recently hit 50,000 followers I asked the fans to suggest a new material for me to work with. The most popular suggestion (that I hadn't worked with previously) was coffee and the kind folks at Death Wish Coffee Co. offered to send me a couple of pounds! My studio smells great now.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.24

Partaking in sustenance is a necessary requirement for our skull hunters, and this also happens to be a great time and place to find those sneaky little skulls around us.

Jennifer Dzielak enjoyed this cup of "pirate coffee"....

....and Cullen Paradise was grabbing pizza with a friend and noticed this little guy in the tile floor.

No matter where you are and what you're doing the skulls will find you. When and if you're lucky enough to catch an image of one then send it to us to be recorded in the Skull-A-Day archives. Thanks Jennifer and Cullen!

Barista Skull

Sean Mears, a barista in Melbourne Australia, created this set of tasty looking skulls.

Grande C says:

Coffee art is a truly wonderful and amazing gene of art.  So much care and energy is put into creating a piece that is just meant to last mere minutes.  If there ever was an art form in which the concept of making us remember our temporal place is stressed it would be that of coffee art.  Thank you for your eye opening work, both in and on top of the cup.

Sunday Simulcara - Version 5.26

Wait. Did you see that?!? It's this week's round of simulacra as captured by our skull hunters.

I caught a quick glimpse of this sneaky guy last Sunday while watching some good old American football. Thanks to my DVR for the assist.

Jason Hirschfeld snapped a shot of this smiley skull in his cup of joe.

And Casey Templeton of Richmond, VA caught this skull trying to hide behind a veil.

Thanks as always to the diligent skull hunters who keep this Sunday tradition alive. Be sure to submit your skull simulacra to add to our magnificent trophy room.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.22

With Halloween one day away, here are some skull items that will help you celebrate.

Mathieu took this photo of his Irish coffee, in a bar in Montmartre, Paris.

Mica (Noah's sister), spotted this in an NYC thrift shop window. Noah said, he is "very tempted to buy it for (his) house".

When I was baking my Pumpkin Skull Cookie, I baked more cookies using the drop method. When I was removing them from the cookie sheet, I noticed this one looked like a skull. This was the first one to be eaten.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

Al Frank in Austin, TX found this skull on the lid of his drink.

Stacy in Sasebo, Japan said "So, I pour myself a nice cold glass of Asahi, and this is what I found a few minutes later."

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.7

Today's skulls were left over from liquids.

Anny Nachtigall in Chandler, AZ, said "I dumped the grounds from my espresso maker and looked inside and voila! A little skully appeared to make me smile."

Kenneth C Martin found this "While cooking  on April 25, 2011,  I happened to look down at a droplet of water on a glass top stove and caught this image of a skull. Quite honestly it unnerved me for the moment, so I decided to take some pictures and post them to my site on Facebook."

Michelle in Monticello,  AR said, I was pouring some old buttermilk down the drain and noticed this skull clinging to "life" on the side of the jug!!"

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.24

A little bit of Simulacra sustenance for you this week.

First up is Christina who returns to Skull-A-Day with this find: “I had finished a cup of Greek coffee and I wanted to read my fortune and here was the skull looking back at me.”

“LF” was also reading what his food was telling him: “Here is potato salad that was about to be thrown out, I noticed the skull and took a picture.”

Last is Sharkie from NZ who said: “I was eating deep fried tofu just now, when I stumbled upon your website. After browsing through, I looked at my tofu cube and saw some possible patterns!”

Cleo C says:

This is an excellent collection of simulacra that we can add to the ever growing collection. Christina, don't worry it was just telling you that one was finished and you needed a refill. LF, potato salad, IMHO, is always evil this just proves it. Sharkie, thanks for stumbling upon us. You have already caught the simulacra bug, don't worry it is not fatal it just looks that way.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.22

Happy Halloween, skull hunters. Today's simulacrum have an extra bit of creepiness to enhance today's mood.

Shelik awoke to the horror of a bloody blanket one morning. "This skull was inadvertently drawn in my own blood. Long story short: Alcohol, cut my chin open, bled like mad, cleaned it up as best as I could, and then went to bed. I awoke to a bloody blanket and a skull smiling smugly back at me."

Angela Ramirez has discovered what must be a haunted outhouse. "The simulacra is my friend BMac's outhouse in McCarthy Alaska. You would not believe how many times I walked passed this simulacra before I 'saw' it."

And I'm gonna take you way back to Braincase XVII where we first got wind of evil's aroma when Phil and Mady found this devilish cinnamon skull lurking in their coffee filter.

Thanks as always to the skull hunters out there. I hope today's festivities find you in the presence of many happy skulls. Perhaps you'll even catch a simulacra of your own that you can submit. That would be awesomely ghoulish!

“Countdown To Halloween”
IT'S FINALY HERE! Happy Halloween, everyone!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 3.42

It seems that food and drink are some of the favorite subjects for our skull hunters. These simulacra fall in a long line of the edible skulls.

Sam Snoek-Brown sent us this, "drop of coffee that spilled on my way into the living room. Too good to pass up."

I guess you could say it was good to the last drop. (maybe not)

Next, Rafael Zentil shows us what I have always known- tomatoes are EVIL!

And this last bit of toasty goodness comes from our very own Skull Master. Of course we know that he sees skulls everywhere.

Thanks again to all of you skull hunters for the simulacrum. Keep sending them in to our submission address and we'll keep posting them to appease your skull appetites.

C-Rations: 0C10011

This week’s offering is Coffee
“Good to the Last Drop” approx. 4" X 4" fresh ground and whole coffee beans in a natural filter

Juan C-dez says:

I began thinking about the brutality that is inflicted upon this fruit for our daily pleasure; being roasted, ground, and covered in hot water can really ruin ones day. Here is a great answer to your questions about the life of a coffee bean from field to cup.

Remember each Monday during the 3.0 year I am posting an original skull design. My weekly offerings are nothing compared to the one-a-day massive project done by the Skullmaster in 1.0, but hopefully you will find some nourishment in these weekly offerings.

323. NYC Coffee Cup Skull

Crumpled Paper Coffee Cup. If you've ever spent time in NYC you'll recognize this as the classic paper coffee cup given out at bodegas/delis (why it has Grecian art on it I cannot say). Yes, I found this on the street, and no I didn't leave it there. On a side note my sister, who lives up here, said I really should do something other than skulls made of trash when I'm here since it might give people the wrong impression of this town we both love.
