Macroscopi​c Skulls

These two tangled treats are courtesy of Berlin based  Meyoko.  Her finely detailed ink drawings take a closer look into nature while keeping the overall picture in mind.    

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice at making skulls out of, "Forests made of luxuriant
hair that are inhabited by tattooed flowers and plants ;by ravens and hummingbirds with strange silky bodies in place of feathers."

These are beautiful pieces that draw you in close to see all of the details. Don't be fooled though, they're featured on our site because they're still skulls. Impressive ink work, Meyoko!

Skull Birthday Cake

Craig Jacob's wife Alice had this cake made for Craig's 50th birthday. It was made by Blanca Combas. It contains five of Craig's favorite things; skulls, Starbucks, Macallan Scotch, Fat Boy Harley Davidson, and electrical connectors, which are all edible. The skull was made of chocolate mocha cake. The crate was vanilla cake. The coffee and scotch bottle were made of rice krispies cakes.

The ability to make sculptures using cake and icing has always fascinated me. Of course my favorite part of this particular cake creation is the skull. The chocolate mocha cake with the white fondant icing, is a nice and delicious combination. I hope Craig enjoyed his birthday and delicious looking cake.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.52

This week's round of simulacra are some of the toughest around. Being made of hardened material only adds to the fact that these are some stoniest faced simulacra that we may have ever seen....

Jess Sand saw this rough looking figure in the side yard near her old community garden and thought of us. You gotta love the way the plants are growing into it. Excellent find!

And Charlton Yu of Everything Burger rolled across this bumpy faced fellow on his skateboard on the street one day in Downtown Los Angeles.  Luckily he went back and snapped a pic for us.

Sophie's Skull Flash

Sophie Adamson has been here before with some great skull sketches, but now she's making her return as a tattoo apprentice at Art and Soul Tattoo in Plymouth UK, and presenting this battered brain case.

I'm really digging this piece because it reminds me of the Black Label Society skull.  The ink splatters give a wonderful blood effect that causes me to question the severity of it's demise.  Bloody and violent seems to come to mind.  A peaceful passing doesn't seem likely.  You're work is getting better, Sophie.  Thanks for keeping us updated, and please continue to do so.

Metal Art Skull Swag

Metal Maestros at THE RAVE 'N' IRON Giselle & Tim from British Columbia, Canada used reclaimed scrap sheet metal to create these skull treasures.

“Freckles are Fun!” Acid-etched and naturally heat tempered to ginger-goodness!

“I vant to suck your blud.” Just a creepy little Vampire pendant for all those fans.

Spacey Skull

Thomas Powell and Dmitry are back with an amazing sculptured named "Spacey".

The retro space look of this reminds me of classic tales of astronauts and space explorers, from the 1950s through the 1960s. This particular sculpture is reminder of those brave space pioneers that don't always return back to earth, forever lost in the cosmos.

"Still Waters" Skull

"AAAAARRRGGHHH!!!" I had to start off this post with a hearty pirate yell in supreme approval of the enchanted skull paintings submitted by Kay Larch.  Kay covers a lot of subjects from briny deep to the colorful afterlife.

The first piece makes this Trusty Shellback of the U.S. Navy (yes, I have my plaque and card) harken back to days on the ocean and the iconography of the Navy, and the life at sea.  I still love those styles and Kay's painting style adds a whole new effect of stained glass or tile, which is another favorite of mine.  Plus, that octopus is pretty badass, too!  Kudos for the great work, Kay!

Moss and Leaf Skulls

Shannen Fisher is a Visual Arts Student at the University of Salford, in the UK. She created a sculpted skull surrounded by moss and a skull cut into a leaf.

I always enjoy seeing the same motif made out of different materials. That's sort of the point of Skull-A-Day...skull art out of a variety of mediums and objects. Whether you are a student in school of education or the school of life, experimenting with new techniques and items is a never ending way to learn.

Hollow Thoughts: A Skull Show

Our skull hunters are in the kitchen today. Arming themselves with cooking implements and cameras has led to the great payoff.

Another watercolor style piece. This time I finished it with a clear varnish to increase the depth of the darker sections.
