Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.41

Today's simulacra arrives in the form of Snow from Alex Arroyo in Brooklyn, NY.

Forecaster C says:

It looks like a 100% chance for a simulacra arriving today. Make sure you pack your ghoul-oshes if you go out.  It is hard for me to believe that in just a couple of weeks spring will arrive leaving our winter friend to be just a memory. Thank you for sharing this amazing find with us.

Keep sending those pictures in, we always love seeing what our skull hunters find. Anyone is welcomed to participate, it's fun and it's easy- if you see a simulacra skull, photograph it and send those pictures in to our submissions address with a little something about what it is really and maybe a little about you.

Skull-A-Day Press: Flow

The Skull-A-Day project gets a nice mention in the recent Simplify Your Life issue of Flow magazine from the Netherlands!

Here's a rough translation:
12. Set yourself achievable goals
Creativity requires action, says Noah Scalin, creative. "Stop thinking and start doing! The creativity is already inside of you, the secret is taking action instead of just thinking about making things. Give yourself small manageable creative goals (i.e. make something that fits in the palm of your hand) and then just do it on a regular schedule (daily? 3 times a week? Once a week?) without judging the outcome. Think of it as exercise for your brain. The more you make, the better you’ll get!"

Noah Scalin makes images and photos, he paints, writes and creates illustrations from  paper. Also he created the Skull-A-Day project: see how Noah made a skull every day for a year. "It was such a pure creative expression and I loved that something that at first seemed ridiculous and personal turned out to be so life changing for me and has reached so many people all over the world! " Noah's latest book The Design Activist's Handbook has just appeared. Noah's Skull a Day project can be found on Skulladay.com.

The article also features Darth Buttons image I created for the Star Wars Remix project!

Animal Skull Wall Vases

Don't worry, it's not as bad as it sounds. The good folks from Scaleworks in the Netherlands have no interest in exploiting wildlife for their personal design ideas.  These skulls, measuring 53cm wide x 76cm high x 30cm deep, are made from MDF, glass, and some optional pink and orange branches.

**Scale Works is an Amsterdam based prop design studio specializing in interior design, photo shoots, theatrical productions, unique gifts and home decor.  It was created in April 2012 by British born, Amsterdam based, visual artist Lawrence James Bailey as a means to distract himself from all the other important things he was supposed to be doing.  Much of the Scale Works output attempts to mix day-day banality with mysticism, occultist symbolism and cheeky rustic charm.

These wall vases are just a couple of the skulls found over at the Scaleworks website.  I truly appreciate the combination of biology and technology in these and other pieces they have.  It's a great way to celebrate the wonders of nature by using the man made products that came from the Earth first.  Thanks for sharing!

Turkish Skull

Visual artist Dunya Atay from Istanbul, Turkey shared with us a illustrated skull that she did.

Delighted C says:

I really appreciate the composition in this work the bright shape floating on a sea of tight black text invokes memories of the Halloween season as we spread out news papers under our pumpkins ripe for the carving. I wish I knew how to read Turkish it looks like an interesting read.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Terrifying Skulls

Clay Kasserman created two mixed media skulls. He explained, "They start as pen and ink drawings that I scan and then finish with Photoshop."

These remind me of horror movies I should have watched before bed. You know the kind with melting faces and dead people becoming alive again. I feel like these could eat my brains in one chomp...or just give me nightmares for weeks.

"Hell followed" Skull

Andy Hunt is an artist/designer from Chapel Hill, NC. He spends his off time designing & illustrating prints and t-shirts. This prophetic illustration brings a special kind of doom with it....

..."And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." -Revelation 6:8.

The prophecy rings true, my children! Skull art is still some of the best works on the interwebs and this piece proves it! And if you don't like this then you need to see Andy's other site. Especially this. Thanks for the excellent submission, Andy!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.40

Aubrey Thornock from Utah told us: "I found this skull today while eating breakfast in bed. My husband made crepes and I noticed this skull looking at me from my plate."

Ricky C says:

Don't think of them as crepes, think of them as really thin skullcakes.  Thank you for sharing this early morning riser with us.

Keep sending those pictures in, we always love seeing what our skull hunters find. Anyone is welcomed to participate, it's fun and it's easy- if you see a simulacra skull, photograph it and send those pictures in to our submissions address with a little something about what it is really and maybe a little about you.

Scott's Saturday of Several Different Skulls

Scott Middlehurst has been here before with this symbolic illustration, and now he's back with a diverse set of new skulls in all different mediums.

Scott knows how to keep his creativity flowing by switching up his game(love the hobo nickel).  He's a prime example of how even one person can do so many different works of the same subject.  It's almost like some kind of theme for a skull art blog I know of.......  Thanks again, Scott!

Data Skull

Steven Rodrig of  PCB Creations in Newport News, VA sent us this data skull made
from recycled printed circuit boards and components.

Next Generation C says:

Dead Media at its best. It is amazing to think about that just 25 years ago these circuit boards would have been considered too precious or too expensive to throw away and now they end up in the landfill by the truck load.  Thank you for finding a second life for these by-products of our modern-life and also for sharing your work with us.

Cuddly Skull

Mark Taylor's 9 year old daughter Hollee-Ann, from Luton, UK, made him this cuddly skull. He explained that she made it out of a bag of felt/fleece fabric, hand stitched it, and stuffed it with cotton wool.

I love seeing what kids create more than adults, because their vision and use of materials is so open and creative. My daughter also made a stuffed skull recently, so when I saw this, I instantly smiled. Sewing projects like these remind me of when I 1st started sewing as a young kid, but I never made anything as cool as a stuffed skull.

Zofsallonika's skull

Self taught artist, Zofsallonika, hails from Thessaloniki, Greece and is here today with this intricate and colorful skull.

I can't decide if this reminds me more of a fingerprint or a skull with worms crawling on it but either way I still like the intensity in the patterns.  Thanks for submitting it, zofsallonika!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.39

Somewhere in RVA Stacie Alvarado found this beautiful shell, and was kind enough to share it and this tongue twister, "Stacie sees skulls in shells by the seashore."

Try saying that 10 times fast. This first person who does will receive a renewed sense of confidence in their linguistic skills. Don't forget to share your hidden skull finds(and possible tongue twister) with us. Thanks for bringing us to the beach with you, Stacie!

Winged Skull

This "winged skull" illustration comes from Ryan Harris. A collage of geometric shapes patterned into a skull with some wicked headgear.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this in our inbox was a robotic style Mayan headdress.  The almost hypnotic symmetry draws you into a geometrical vortex of mathematical proportions.  Thanks for sharing your work, Ryan!

Reflective Skull

Cat Bruce from Scotland showed off this skull badge [pin] made with buttons, felt and reflective fabric.

Safety C says:

What a great way to incorporate a little safety with fashion.  I dabbled a little with the reflective material way back HERE, but never thought of using it to be the main focus of the design perhaps I need to revisit this material again in the future.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.
