[CONTEST] Win a Set of Occult Christmas Cards

THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED! Thanks to everyone who participated.

Sean Tidy was unsatisfied with the same old Christmas cards he saw in shops, so he decided to make his own. He said, "They are a fun twist on classic Christmas themes, with a little black metal, church burning sprinkled on top." These are definitely not your average Christmas cards. They have skulls, skeletons, and some dark occult elements that remind me of other culture's Christmas stories. Sean wants to share his unusual Occult Christmas cards with you all. He's giving away a set of 5 cards to one lucky Skull-A-Day fan!

PRIZE INFO: One set of five Occult Christmas cards (one of each design). Each card comes with a brown, ribbed envelope, and they are individually wrapped in cellophane.

HOW TO ENTER: Leave a comment below telling us what unusual Winter holiday traditions you do. For example, my family opens all their presents on Christmas Eve vs. Christmas morning. "Santa" brings the kids more presents the following morning.

CONTACT INFO: If you win, we need to contact you. With your comment, please include your email, or make sure your Blogger profile has a working email link for you on it. Entries are only valid with this information.

WHERE TO ENTER: All entries must be made on this blog post, on Skull-A-Day.com. You CANNOT enter this contest by commenting on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+.

CONTEST CLOSES: 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time Saturday, December 22nd.

NUMBER OF WINNERS: One

PRIZE SHIPS: This contest is open to all skull lovers around the world.

IF YOU DON'T WIN: Don't fret. Sean's Occult Christmas cards are available for purchase in his store. The are available in sets of 5 and 10, or sold individually. Also, you can see more of Sean's artwork on his Website and Facebook page.

Skully Klaws

Lebotomy is back again with a piece he created named "Skully Klaws".

I know, I know, it's not even Halloween, and I'm already posting Christmas stuff. You know you've been ogling the abundant skeletons and skulls of Halloween merchandise, as much as the glittery ornaments and colorful trees as much as the next person...or maybe that's just me. The legend of Santa is of an immortal man that lives where no other person can go and delivers and bottomless sack full of presents to billions of children in 24 hours/one night. For those who believe in the legend, perhaps instead of one immortal man, there have been thousands of "Santas". Perhaps, they all look like Skully Klaws in their arctic crypt. Or, something less deep...this would make an awesome Christmas card.

[Flashback Friday] 5.29- Santa Skulls

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Tatman, Azurafae, and myself, Citizen Agent, are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

Joanne Dhody of Design Unlimited made these patches for everyone on staff at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia back in 2009

Longtime fan of Skull -A-Day, Larry Pearson sent us his Holiday wishes also in 2009.

Tatman’s, wife was in the Skullmas spirit as she made a Santa Skull sugar cookie on a snowy day back in 2009 to wish all a Happy Skullidays .

And to wrap up the skulliday season 2010, John Angelo spotted this sneaky simulacra. "This is a decorative coaster/holder my mother-in-law had at her house. It depicts Santa's jolly head, but when I saw it reversed, all I could see was a skull."

Slay Bells C says:

In doing today’s flashback I was surprised to find that we have a very limited offering of Santa Skulls in our growing archives. However, what we lack in Quanity we make up for in Quality. Thank you all for allowing us to share these wonderful creations/find once again to enjoy as we rest up for the next holiday ahead. As always, if anyone finds themselves inspired to make a santa skull or anyother holiday related skull please remember to send it in we love to share them.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here. During year 4.0 the editors had their chance to countdown their favorites Azurafae HERE, Citizen Agent HERE, and Tatman HERE.

Dia de la Abby #67: Embroidered Skull Ornament

Since it's the season for holiday celebrations, this is the perfect time to make a skull ornament.

I've wanted to do a hand embroidered skull for a while, but since I've been doing embroidery since I was a young child, I wanted a challenge. I choose to make this embroidered skull through layers of bridal tulle and stiffen it with a simple glue mixture. This was so the skull would be delicate looking, but sturdy. This is meant to be a holiday ornament, but could be framed or used as an applique. This thankfully wasn't too challenging, so I am able to provide you all with a tutorial.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  Facebook, Google+ and/or Twitter.

[Flashback Friday] 5.25- Holiday Skulls

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Tatman, Azurafae, and myself, Citizen Agent, are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

Since today is the “official” kick off to the holiday season I thought I would Flashback to some skullliday crafts from us as inspiration for something to give this year instead of waiting in line 18 hours for something to buy simply because it is “on sale”.

In order of appearance:

First up is The Skullmaster with his 239. Wire Ball Skull

Balled 24 Gauge Metal Wire (2.5in x 2in x 2.25in)

Next up is Tatman with Tuesdays With Tatman #27

Next is by myself, Citizen Agent, with C-Rations: 0C11100

“Sarah Cous” approx. 4" X 3" Fresh orange pierced with cloves on a leather hanger.

And last is Azurafae with Dia de la Abby: #27 - Skullflake (Skull Snowflake)

Simply C says:

Wishing all of you Happy Skullidays. If you are inspired to create some skulltastic gifts or decorations please make sure you record your greatness and send the results this way to our Submission Box.

Skull of Flowers

Douglas Considine submitted these photos of a skull made of flowers and the Christmas tree they came from. He explains about the two pieces. "After spending much of 2009 collection artificial flowers to construct the 2009 Christmas Tree' I found, once yule time had passed and the tree deconstructed, I had a garbage bag filled with post Christmas blooms. I chucked it into storage until February this year when I thought it was time to unpack the posies and construct a Blooming Skull...hope you like it."

Indeed, I do like both pieces. I love flowers. They are one of the most beautiful things on this planet. I love how versatile they can be in creating with them. These pieces remind me of the Rose Bowl floats that are made of flowers and other plant materials. I'm always amazed at the uses of texture and color to create amazing images. For these two pieces, not only is the color variety amazing, but the use of shapes to fill in all the void areas to make compact pieces. The tree is a refreshing take on a traditional pine tree. Winter can be very gloomy, so bright spring like colors are a welcoming sight. I like that since the flowers are artificial that they can be reused for many things...from tree to wall hanging. I can also see these flowers strung together for a colorful Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Dia de la Abby #48: Jelly Belly Bean Skull

This past Sunday was Easter. For part of the day, I made a skull out of Jelly Belly Beans.

In a way, this was a family project. My parents and brother insisted on making me wash my hands before touching the jelly beans that mom had already been touching with unwashed hands, so I did. I requested a piece of plastic wrap, so I wouldn't be spreading jelly beans on an unclean surface. Mom ripped me off a large piece. She suggested that I used a cookie sheet instead of her counter top, so the skull would show up better. I dug a cookie sheet out of the drawer, laid the plastic wrap on it and dumped jelly beans on the work surface. I started pulling out the dark colors, so the skull would be bright. Russell (my brother), said I should separate the colors out. I could have done that, but I've seen some great ones with separations, and didn't want to do that same things. That, and I wanted to finish quickly, so I could watch Alex hunt for eggs. Also, there was pie waiting. Pie is good. After I was done arranging them, while my family watched and snacked on jelly beans, I put all the beans I touched, back in the jar! This was a tasty project.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook.

Dia de la Abby #29: Skull Vase with Poinsettias, Holly and Berries

With fresh snow on the ground and Christmas quickly approaching, I thought I would make something a bit festive.

I'm busy making presents, so I wanted to do use a medium that I was really familiar with. I used a regular #2 pencil and a handy skull model to draw the skull. The Poinsettias, Holly and Berries were drawn with colored pencils. I've been drawing for a large portion of my life...over 25 years, so I've had a lot of practice. However, I'm not expert. I used basic shading and shapes to create the plants. Those don't take as much practice as drawing a semi-realistic skull does. I decided not to write a tutorial on this one, because even though I've been drawing and coloring for many years, I always have to play with the colors and shapes till I get something that I like. I recommend you play with any new or old medium until you like the results. This is also a good way to stay busy should you be snowed in...like I might be when I check later.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will be post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook.

Dia de la Abby: #27 - Skullflake (Skull Snowflake)

Every Winter, my daughter and I make paper snowflakes to decorate the windows of our house. This year I thought I would challenge myself and make a more intricate one using a skull and flower motif that is reminiscent of Dia de los Muertos. I haven't decided where I'm going to hang this one. If you would like to learn how I made this one, so you can make your own, see the tutorial. I would love to see your finished ones. Send them to our Submission Box.

Holiday Skulls

It is never too early to start thinking about the winter holiday season. Here is a little tool to help you keep track.

Our first contributor Jen wrote: “I made a batch of paper mache skulls for our holiday tree. This is one of my favorites. We'll see if my husband ever lets me decorate the tree by myself again. ” One can find more pictures of decorations here.

Next up is James Robinson at Fire Cat Studios who told us: “This was the ‘angel’ on our x-mas tree. Made from a white glove, black fabric, and part of a clothes hanger.

Tree Trimmer C says:

I really like the idea of a momento mori themed holiday tree especially when those decorations are handmade. Thank you both for submitting your work and Happy Skullidays to one and all.
