Leather Faced Skull Flasks

Three IS the magic number, and not only do we have 3 skulls on leather clad flasks to share today from Enrique Camacho, but this is also his third time appearing on our site(here are the links to his painted shelf and burned leather bags).  I do have my own skull flask, but this set is way cooler.  Enrique let us know that they were labeled before he put the skulls on them, but it adds a level of vintage that you want from a leather clad glass flask.  Thanks again for sharing your work, Enrique!

Embellished Skull Sculputures

Victoria Stafford, from Brighton, England, creates these one of a kind skulls. Each one is handmade from start to finish. She has a lengthy creation process. She starts with rotocasting each skull in several layers of resin in her self made mold. Skull Portraits

Marcus Wemyss, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, painted these Day of the Dead skull portraits. They are oil on canvas and were painted in 2012. I love these portraits, which capture traditional Dia de los Muertos skull makeup. We often get submissions of skull makeup, which are all great. French Sk8 Shop Skulls

Nico, aka- 345, is a French artist with this exhibition on display at a skate shop. The pieces are displayed all horizontally, but due to pixel constraints I stacked them so you could get a better look.  I still love the way skulls look when painted on natural wood(here and here).  Awesome stuff. Oversized Skull

Mel Rudgley from Sydney, Australia, is back with this painting she created using left over Dulux house paint and framed in reclaimed timber. It now hangs above her bed. Huichol Skull

Jake Maughan recently finished his 1st Huichol Skull. He explained "We saw this beautiful artwork in Mexico and it was one of the few things that we could not barter on. I decided I would save several hundred dollars and make it myself. It is done by covering something in Beeswax and then pushing seed beads into the wax with a needle, one at a time. In the end it took 4 months, and approximately 25,000 seed beads to complete." A Huichol Skull is on my art collection list. Because it takes so long to make one, they are expensive to purchase. I appreciate that Jake took the time to do this correctly and learned a new craft.

Watery Ink Skull

Tuesday with Trudeau

This Tuesday is a special one with a great artist from Winnipeg, Canada(Go Jets!)- Danielle Trudeau. She has submitted a pair of fantastic skulls that may surprise you with their size.  The first is titled "Kiss of Life"; done with ball point pen and acrylics, it measures only 4" x 6".  The second is a gold leafed beauty titled "Glamour" measuring 8" x 10" on a wooden panel.  Great work on both mediums, and thanks for sharing, Danielle!

Momento Mori

Owen Priestley of 20three, created this "Momento Mori" screenprint. A momento mori is an artistic or symbolic reminder of death. It's often shown with skulls or skeletons, which represent death. Owen's print shows various skulls, which is a reminder that everyone dies at some point. What is more important is that everyone lives too, so use your time wisely, so when it's your time to depart this world, you leave with no regrets. Today's skulls were found on food. Reed Peckerson said he "Spotted this green apple skull in the trash can at my house." Kristina Newton of Columbus, Ohio, explained "This skull happened when the donuts stuck together from all the fresh, gooey chocolate! Love these finds. Cybermechanical Skull

Simon Lejeune is a freelance illustrator, web and graphic designer based in Berlin Germany. He specializes in biomechanical, cyberpunk drawings that captivate your imagination.  This magnificent skull below is 21 x 29.7cm (8.26" x 11.69") and done with only a ballpoint pen on thick paper.  Shading, depth, and detail are all wonderfully present in his work.  Thanks for sharing your skull with us, Simon!

Maori Lava Rock Skull

Christopher Soprano of Sop Art Studio, created this sculpture. He was inspired by facial tattoos of the New Zealand Maori warriors. He explained, the "skull appears to float on a bed of simulated lava rock. The base of the wall sculpture is cast in a translucent resin. When hung in a window or in front of a light source the stones emit a molten glow." Tattooing has a long history and I love seeing it still used by centuries (and eons) old cultures, continuing their traditions.

Peter McKeown of Melbourne, Australia is "playin' with the Queen of Hearts" (sorry, I can't help but think of that song). Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.48

Skeleton Cardboard was being very observant when he spotted today's map simulacrum. This is a boating lake in Victoria Park, London.  By looking at the words on the map as a reference I can see that this skull is not running North and South, but more Northeast to Southwest(or vice versa).  Either way, it should be renamed "Skull Lake".   Thanks for sharing your awesome find, S/C!

Conjoined Skulls

Rachel Quinlivan of Alabama, is back, with a painting of conjoined skulls. I'm fascinated with skeletal deformities, since I have a few myself. Conjoined ones are extreme deformities, from the cells not fully dividing for twins. The most famous conjoined twins are Thai brothers, Chang and Eng Bunker, who were attached at the chest and shared a liver. They lived to be 63, and had families. The term "Siamese Twins", comes from these two brothers being billed as when traveling with P.T. Barnum.

Metal Skulls

Gille Monte Ruici, from Paris, France, is back with skulls he created with kitchenware utensils, lids, and brooches. He explains, "The vanities of the 17th century represented in paintings meant: memento mori ( remember you that you're going to die). I illustrate in a contemporary way by: Some day you're going to die...it can be because of the junk food." Too true. I like seeing a modern take on memento mori. His work reuses every day objects as reminder that life is short and to live well.
