Alexander's Three Skulls

Alexander,  from the Ukraine, sent us these 3 pieces. "I like to paint in various techniques and most of the works are a skull."

Vendetta
"This work was done in PhotoShop."

4 Season
"Drawn with colored pencils on A4."

RGB Skull
"This is my vector work done in Corel draw."

I like seeing the varations in skull designs and mediums. That is how we do Skull-A-Day...different skulls, different mediums. I like how viscous the blood looks in the 1st one. The idea of seeing the four seasons in art, is something that I've wanted to play with. I like seeing this skull on a cherry tree and how the cycling of the seasons affects it. From Fall where it's shade of leaves falls, to Winter where snow chills it, to Spring where it's brightened with blooms, to Summer where the tree provides cherries, which will attract bird visitors. Makes me miss my grandparents' cherry tree from my youth. The last piece has a pop art quality with it's change in colors and a tattoo quality with the classic flaming skull. I love seeing this variation in work from one artists and all of our submitters.

Dia de la Abby #38: Bleeding Skull

I have been playing with blood splatter on a few hair accessories, but I wanted to try it on canvas. I recommend doing this outside, as it's messy. Also, cover your work surface or you will have splatter where you don't want it. I laid the canvas flat. I used different shades of red paint (red + black in different amounts) with water to make the paint splatter better. I used a paint brush because I wanted large splatters and drips. I tapped the handle of the brush on the side of one pointer finger to control the splatter mess. If you wanted something finer, you could use an old paint brush and rub your thumb across the paint dipped bristles. I made sure the shades of red splatter overlapped each other, for added interest. After I was satisfied with the coverage and used up all my alloted paint, I stood the canvas up and leaned it against the railing of my balcony. The paint immediately ran and a large pool of it formed at the bottom...sticky much like real blood. After the paint had stopped running, I laid it down to dry, away from the pool of paint on the covered work surface. This is definitely one of the creepier paintings I've done, but the way the reds flow together, is really beautiful.

Every week in the 4.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby posts as well as a tutorial with instructions on how I made my piece. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on Facebook.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.22

Happy Halloween, skull hunters. Today's simulacrum have an extra bit of creepiness to enhance today's mood.

Shelik awoke to the horror of a bloody blanket one morning. "This skull was inadvertently drawn in my own blood. Long story short: Alcohol, cut my chin open, bled like mad, cleaned it up as best as I could, and then went to bed. I awoke to a bloody blanket and a skull smiling smugly back at me."

Angela Ramirez has discovered what must be a haunted outhouse. "The simulacra is my friend BMac's outhouse in McCarthy Alaska. You would not believe how many times I walked passed this simulacra before I 'saw' it."

And I'm gonna take you way back to Braincase XVII where we first got wind of evil's aroma when Phil and Mady found this devilish cinnamon skull lurking in their coffee filter.

Thanks as always to the skull hunters out there. I hope today's festivities find you in the presence of many happy skulls. Perhaps you'll even catch a simulacra of your own that you can submit. That would be awesomely ghoulish!

“Countdown To Halloween”
IT'S FINALY HERE! Happy Halloween, everyone!

Bloody Face

Today is Independence Day here in the U.S.A. It is a day that we here celebrate for gaining our independence as a free nation. But, like anything worth fighting for, it comes with a price. Matt Gregg from Dayton, Ohio has created a fantastic piece titled "Bloody Face".

Never forget the bloody faces that have tried to make this world better, one way or another, for one reason or another, with their sacrifices. "Death be not proud, though some have called thee". Awesome work, Matt!
