Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.8

Today's skulls were found while looking up.

Randy Latini from Somerdale, NJ found this skull formed from tree leaves and the sky. I included both versions, so you can see the full skull effect of the leaves against the sky.

Vitor Costa of Hallandale, FL said "This Photo was taken inside of a church during a trip to Brussels, Belgium at 6:45PM , March, 07 2011. Me and a couple of friends had been walking all day and just wondered in to take a look, I did not get the name of the church, and just realized that the organ looked like a skull after I got back from the trip."

 Louise from Zurich, Switzerland found this skull in the clouds.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.26

Today's simulacra all come from Skull-A-Day friend and team member, Phil Cheney of Richmond, VA. He was going through some files and found a few that he was compiling for us:

"The first is from a miniature pomegranate tree that we have. It had produced a fruit (actual size is about a quarter coin) that I didn't get to pick before it dried out on the tree. I thought it looked like a skull with a giant head."

"The second is an aerial shot of the High School in Petersburg, VA. This semester I have been look specifically at public land design in Petersburg and found this complex of buildings particularly interesting."

"The third is part of a design on my wife's purse. It looks to me like a sad clown skull with a flower nose."

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.40

Today’s simulacra were found with teamwork.

Dr. Matt in from England wrote: “My girlfriend spotted this awesome skull in the road recently, and we immediately knew that you needed it. :)”


Next Lise said: “This photo was taken by PA and I while waiting for the ferry to Tobermory, Ontario!”


Lastly, Susan Scofield told us: “My friend Jess McPherson spotted this/these skulls - it sort of looks like a conjoined skull - on a column while we were out for dinner after my Gallery Reception at McCleary's Pub in Marietta, PA. ”

Skull Tower

Seeing the ladder and lights brings out the inner kid in me. I'm tempted to climb up in it and use it as a tree house. It's a bit sinister and architecturally beautiful.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.20

Today's skulls were found outside.

Frances Martin, Richmond, VA found a "Skull Rock on the James River.  It is along the coast of Brown's Island and I found it this summer when I was exploring with my sister.  It is about 6 feet by 4 feet I think.  I'll have to go and find it again some time to see how it's doing!"

Doniel from NC, said "My 7 yr old, Stella, found this near the I-40 exit as we were leaving a restaurant.  Knowing my love of skulls she exclaimed about the tree that looks like a skull."

Åke said "I was visiting an old fortress in Kungälv, Sweden called Bohus Fortress. Inside the big tower thats called Father´s Hat, I found this skull shape."

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.50

During my recent travels, I've found a few simulacra skulls.

In April, I was in Falls Church, VA for a friend's birthday. I randomly found this skull by taking photos of clouds out of a car window. I thought it looked like a pirate with a large mustache.

Last week, I went on vacation with my family. While we were walking around Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure in Orlando, FL, I saw this building top in the Dr. Seuss area, that looked like a skull.

Later in the week, we went to Myrtle Beach, SC for a few days. While walking along the beach to a restaurant for dinner, my husband John found his rock that looked like a skull. It was hard to photograph, but it reminded me of those classic sci-fi drawings of aliens.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.22

Happy Halloween, skull hunters. Today's simulacrum have an extra bit of creepiness to enhance today's mood.

Shelik awoke to the horror of a bloody blanket one morning. "This skull was inadvertently drawn in my own blood. Long story short: Alcohol, cut my chin open, bled like mad, cleaned it up as best as I could, and then went to bed. I awoke to a bloody blanket and a skull smiling smugly back at me."



Angela Ramirez has discovered what must be a haunted outhouse. "The simulacra is my friend BMac's outhouse in McCarthy Alaska. You would not believe how many times I walked passed this simulacra before I 'saw' it."



And I'm gonna take you way back to Braincase XVII where we first got wind of evil's aroma when Phil and Mady found this devilish cinnamon skull lurking in their coffee filter.

Thanks as always to the skull hunters out there. I hope today's festivities find you in the presence of many happy skulls. Perhaps you'll even catch a simulacra of your own that you can submit. That would be awesomely ghoulish!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.16

Sam Snoek-Brown is fastly becoming the most celebrated skull hunter here on Skull-A-Day. Pretty soon we'll have to open a trophy room solely for all of his skull captures. All of this week's finds come from Sam starting off with "A skull I found in my breakfast cereal one morning"...

followed by "A piece of toasted bread my wife and I got with dinner in Rockwall, Texas"...

the third "is a building in Amsterdam"...

and as a bonus "I discovered it on the breakfast table one morning. I’d tossed my sunglasses down after a shopping trip the previous afternoon, and quite by accident, the landed near a pack of new batteries in a way that looked skullish to me".

Sunday Simulacra - Version 4.1

To kick off the new 4.0 year I wanted to share some really good simulacrum to start the year off right.

This first find is from skull hunter Scott Bolan who found it in an appropriate place. He writes, "These are two photos of a cemetery in Huaycan Peru. I was there working with a non-profit organization called the Light and Leadership Organization. The picture is from zone Z in Huaycan Peru. A settlement outside of Lima Peru that was created to escape a terrorist organization call The Shining Path."



Second, skull hunter Jeanette Bueno Verastegui sends greetings and a skull from Monterrey, NL Mexico. "I have several photos of a skull shape that I saw when I was about to drink my beer. I love skulls, but I sure I did not manipulate it."



And last we received this from skull hunter Matthew Gibney who simply states, "These are spots on Bobby's pup Sarah."



Thanks again, skull hunters, for keeping your eyes open and submitting these for us to show. If any of you other skull hunters out there find some simulacra then please submit them and we can keep this Sunday tradition alive(and dead). Just remember that it may take a little longer to get posted since we only do this once a week.
