Super Skullistration Saturday

John MDC is a "bone"ified bad ass skull artist.  Almost everything he creates is of the skull.  He's been featured on our site multiple times (here, here, here, and here) and that should stand as a testament to the multitude of skulls he has to submit. 

John's site is teeming with skull art.  Prints, jewelry, shirts, etc.  I don't know if I've ever seen so much skull art produced by one person, aside from our own Skull Master of course.  Thanks again for the great submissions, John!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 6.1

Rachel Bender told us “I took this photo when I was visiting my lil' brother in UT. We were going to through a slot canyon, and stopped to have a snack near this rock. I couldn't resist and had to photograph it.”

3-D Faceted Skull-pture

It brings such joy to be able to feature additional work from some of previous contributors. When I saw this, I immediately got an image of one of a crystal skull, but unlike those this faceted work made me consider something more. I couldn't help but imagine this piece done as a CZ diamond as a social commentary campaign continuing to bring focus on the worldwide trade in “Blood Diamonds”. Thank you for continuing to think of us and sharing your work once again with us.

I like seeing the varations in skull designs and mediums. That is how we do Skull-A-Day...different skulls, different mediums. I like how viscous the blood looks in the 1st one. The idea of seeing the four seasons in art, is something that I've wanted to play with. I like seeing this skull on a cherry tree and how the cycling of the seasons affects it. From Fall where it's shade of leaves falls, to Winter where snow chills it, to Spring where it's brightened with blooms, to Summer where the tree provides cherries, which will attract bird visitors. Makes me miss my grandparents' cherry tree from my youth. The last piece has a pop art quality with it's change in colors and a tattoo quality with the classic flaming skull. I love seeing this variation in work from one artists and all of our submitters.

Skull Trinket Box

Erica R. writes to us, "I've always had a fascination with Mexican art, and Day of the Dead art in particular. Occasionally, I'll paint skully things and sell them on my Etsy shop. This picture is of one of my trinket boxes that sold at the end of last year, and I just love the way it turned out."



Nicely done, Erica! It's too bad that I don't have any skull trinkets to keep in such a box, just the teeth of my enemies. Thanks for sharing.

"Don't Touch My Hair" Skulls

Artist and Illustrator Nik Scarlett cuts a new style with these two skulls. He writes, "Howdy! I follow your Skull A Day blog and I'd like to submit some of my work! I'm a lowbrow artist out of the Philadelphia region (and a regular skull fanatic). Here's a small screen printed duo I did recently that I call "Don't Touch My Hair" - a series of two different skull prints, a male and female counterpart."
