Glowing Skulls

Vincent Lentzsch painted two deer skulls with glow in the dark paint and powder, then used them as props for photos. Some of these resulted from photo tricks and others for Photoshop. We get a lot of photographs of skull artwork, but very few that are artwork themselves. I love bioluminescent creatures. While deer are not naturally, it's magical to see a glowing skull of one.

Skull Love

One of my favorite things is to discover how people have used the things I've given away for free on this site. Recently I developed an Instagram friendship with Registered Artist after I discovered that he had created a stencil out of my Psychedelic Skull. This week he shared a couple of shots of another stencil based on my work. It's an image I created to promote Skull Appreciation Day 2012 in Philadelphia, which you can download as a free stencil to use yourself HERE. He's painting it support my currently running Kickstarter to created a book of all 365 skulls from my original project! If you haven't already please check it out HERE. "Beauty in Darkness" Skulls

You might recall that a few months back, Tim Tindall, shared his painting "Beauty in Darkness". Since then, he's reworked the painting, adding more depth to the skulls and foliage. As an artist, I totally understand going back to a piece and redoing parts of it. Often I stare at a piece for days, to the point of being dissatisfied with it, even though others like it. It's a classic issue for artists to deal with. Thankfully, if you walk away from it, you can often go back and resolve your personal problems with it. I love both versions of the painting, but the darker one does have great depth.

Throwback Thursday: United Skull of America

On day 10 of my original Skull-A-Day year I made a skull out of the 48 continental United States, a couple of years later I made an updated version out of all 50 states. Today I gave a poster of that version of The United Skull of America to William Fox Elementary school as part of a 5th grade graduation speech I gave this morning! Peccator Skull

Gurt Swanenberg, from The Hague, Holland, is "working on a project that depicts a modern version of the classic theme "Seven sins". I'm handpainting skulls or skeletons of animals or humans that symbolize a sin in iconographic art. The skulls are painted with modern day brands that refer to the sin." This piece is titled, "Peccator". I like the juxtaposition of skull and logos from consumer goods. This is an unusual way to use skulls in artwork, but reflects the death of our independent society when we're buried in mass consumerism. You can see more of this collection, on his website.

Skull Door Handles

Jules Andrault is a graphic designer from Paris France. He has been painting intricate designs on skull door handles. He has been making resin mold of human and animals skulls to have customized and bigger skulls. He is drawn to skulls because of a family fascination for them. I don't normally post artwork made with existing skulls, but these were exceptional pieces. I picked my four favorites from the ones Jules submitted to us. Looking forward to seeing this concept on a larger and more custom scale.

Buttons Skull

Simi Warah made this button skull for a fabric sketch book. I'm partial to any art involving sewing. This skull uses the variety of white buttons and tulle in a smart way to define the skull shape. A few years back we decided that our love of skulls should be shared by everyone so we designated, today, June 4th (the day the original Skull-A-Day project launched in 2007), as Skull Appreciation Day!

This year our gift to you is a new DIY skeleton toy designed by me!...

It's a jumping jack that will flail his arms and legs if when you pull his string. There are some basic instructions to follow, but feel free to modify and customize as you see fit. Please download, print, enjoy, and share! Get the PDF HERE.

Epistaxis Skull

RJ from Toronto sent us this image of a skull with an anterior epistaxis. This is, as RJ describes, "a water color that began as three red flowers on a field of green leaves, then it was rinsed under the kitchen tap to soften the outlines and was laid on the counter to dry overnight. It was the next morning when I began to think it seemed like two glowing red eyes in a skull with a nose bleed, which it became with some more red paint and pencil." Glad to see you converted your simulacra into the tangible. Thanks for sharing it, RJ!

Sky Skulls

Robyn Rivers from Fayetteville, TX, took photographs of sunset and storm clouds. She manipulated them with symmetric fx and skulls appeared. I take lots of nature photos, and often of the sky. I rarely see a skull in the sky, but these photo manipulations give me an idea to play with future photos. Robyn's photos are gorgeous with or without the skulls.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.53

Mosaic Skull Heart

Silvia Rosenfelder-Schechtel is back with a mosaic skull heart she created with costume pearls and glass. I love the variation of textures and shine, making both the heart and the skull stand out well. The gold glass teeth are an amusing addition. I could see this used indoors or outdoors, where the sun glimmers off the shiny glass and pearls.

See No Evil Skull

Dan Lane aka Mechanica, creates artwork "based around natural elements i.e. skulls, animals, humans and plants that have taken over, or some how being kept alive by mechanical intervention.  All the pieces are made up of unwanted or thrown away items, people give me anything from old typewriters to fruit bowl! I then create these surreal wall hanging sculptures. The paint effect I use makes the pieces look like they have been cast from metal but the pieces are made up from all sort of different materials." This piece is titled "See No Evil". I love seeing artwork made from old things. This is a great example of how something beautiful can be created from junk. Moose Antler Rings

Scott Middlehurst is the man behind these marvelous moose antler rings. I wish Scott had included where he was from, but I'm assuming it's somewhere that moose antlers are readily available. At any rate, I hear that moose can be pretty mean if provoked so maybe these are some seriously true symbols of danger. Thanks for sharing your craft with us, Scott!

Skull Drawings

Umeko from Edinburgh, Scotland, drew these skulls during a recent visit to the Musee national d'Histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History) in Paris, France. I love seeing non-human skulls. The conjoined skull is a great specimen to sketch, as it's a rare natural occurrence. Makes me want to bring along my sketch book on my next trip to a natural history or science museum.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.52

Noah Scalin found this skull on a paper covered post near the VCU campus. If you are familiar with these sort of posts, they are telephone poles covered with layers of paper and staples from old flyers. This one appears to have a hole bored into it, which exposes the depth of paper layers. If you've found a simulacra skull, please submit it to us. We love sharing what our skull hunters find!

Memento Mori Skull Rings

These kick ass skull rings are brought to us today from Yukee Chen of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Currently he is expressing his art in the form of making custom jewelry. These memento mori skull rings are forged from various metals including brass, sterling silver, and oxidized sterling silver.  I love the way the bottom jaw is detachable.  It might even look like it's talking when you're moving your fingers.  Thanks for the sharing these, Yukee!

Skulls of Stones

Alexis Karl, creates amazing skulls using a variety of stones and naturally found elements. The 1st is "Genus Rose Quartz", made of Quartz, himalayan sea salt, rose quartz, sellinite, marble powder, and resin. The 2nd is "Genus Mahagony Obsidian", made of Mahagony obsidian, jasper, smoky quartz, onyx, resin, and red earth. The 3rd is "Genus Open Jaw", made of Quartz, sellinite,marble powder, and resin. The skulls are part of "Hybridas Morte: Artifact From Tomb of Forgotten Reliquaries", which is currently on display at Warehouse 623 gallery in NYC.

Birds and Skulls

Dan and Anna Barrett, of ChuckleTree, collaborate on a lot of their artworks. Anna explained, "The Crow piece was colored with charcoal, and this has also been made 3 times because my husband is a perfectionist. The Pelican Skeleton was originally created for an art challenge. But we had always wanted a pelican skeleton because every household should have one of those. This was inked by hand, digitally colored, cut by a machine and assembled by hand." I love that they create such wonderful artwork together. I agree, everyone should have a pelican skeleton in their house. Especially if it's as cool as this one. Nuclear Fission Skull

Today's skull from Raik Dalgas is a bit more abstract than some of our usual submissions. Raik writes, "I'm an artist and writer of aphorisms. The skull symbolizes a nuclear fission process. The reasoning to this was the appearance of the man-made nuclear fission process and the impact on nature."  Deeper meanings seem to lie behind almost every skull. Thanks for sharing yours, Raik!
