Super Winged Skull Saturday

Angel Salavec is to blame for this almost overwhelming load of wonderful winged skulls. She apologized for sending so many, and it's not often that we post this many pics in one day, but I couldn't help but share the entire flock of cranial creations. These handmade paper mache and plaster cast wall skullptures are all so different yet the same.

Believe it or not, there are even more skulls to check out in Angel's Etsy store.  Even throughout a common theme she manages to create vastly unique characters.  The variety was demanding of display so I had to share them all with all of you.  Thanks for spreading your wings, Angel!

Shadow Series Skull

Artist Richelle told us: " This oil on canvas piece from my Shadows Series called 'Talisman' was done to show the bright side of the dark side."

Sunny C says:

I love that this skull has eyebrows, we don't get to see eyebrows on skulls too often. Perhaps this is the lighter side that we need to see more of in the future. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

[BONUS] Skullphabet #1 In-Use with Woodwork

Crystal, used the Skullphabet #1 to form her name with woodwork.

The finished piece

In the process of painting it

This font and the Skullphabet #2 are very intricate. I'm impressed that she carved her name using this font, into wood. The painting is also very precise and gives a nice contrast, so the font elements...letters and skulls...stand out.

We love seeing what people create using our available Free Stuff. If you make something using something from the Free Stuff section of Skull-A-Day, please submit it to us! We'd love to share it!

Laser Cut Skulls

Carl Stevenson in London, England, of Paperfiction, created this laser cut popup skull card and vinyl skull decals.

Lasers are awesome. These creations reconfirm that I need to play with a laser cutter. The precision they create, lend themselves to being used for fantastic designs like these. Carl shared these pieces with us, but check out his Etsy shop, Paperfiction, for more awesome creations.

Rainbow Skull

I know it might be hard to believe the title, but Ron Boyer has done a beautiful job of filling his skull full of color and life.

The radiating sun in the forehead adds light to the illuminating glow that shines with luster and reflectivity.  The colors are astounding in their boldness.  I never thought I would ever see all the colors of the rainbow create such an effervescent skull so full of anti-life while also making me crave some Lifesavers candy.  Thanks for sharing your work, Ron!

Collborative Snow Skull

Back in March, Lisa Nichols got a lot of snow in West Haven, CT. Her husband, Jeff Slomba, made this snow skull with his two boys, Luke and Henry.

I love seeing what people create out of snow, especially when it's a skull. This is a fantastic one! I'm glad this was a family creation, as something of this scale definitely requires teamwork. Though Spring has finally showed up here in Richmond, VA, I know several places still have snow. If you still have snow, we fully expect you all to create a snow skull! If you have, please submit it to us!

Sunday Simulacra: Version 6.45

Last week, I went to Grand Caverns in Grottoes, VA. It's an amazing cavern and unlike others I've seen. I took a lot of photos, because I love natural wonders. While looking through the photos on my computer, I noticed these 3 skulls.

This is looking from a dark section, through an opening, into a light section.

This one was hiding in one of the few reflecting pools

Again, looking from a dark area, to a light one. This skull is on a large calcium deposit column.

I found these three skulls there, but there could be more lurking. It's a very beautiful and mysterious place full of shadowy areas. Without the artificial lights, it's pitch black. Touring a cavern in always an amazing experience. If you haven't toured on, check out your local areas for public ones.

Keep sending those pictures in, we always love seeing what our skull hunters find. Anyone is welcomed to participate, it's fun and it's easy- if you see a simulacra skull, photograph it and send those pictures in to our submissions address with a little something about what it is really and maybe a little about you.

"Shayne Of The Dead" Skulls

'Shayne of the Dead' is an artist and professional Bon Vivant. He tries to do a 'skull-a-day' on his phone everyday and was kind enough to share two great and totally different pieces with us.

I'm not sure who the first bloke is supposed to be, but Mr. Peanut won't get out of my head.  Luckily the multicolored, tripped out skull group snaps me back to my own little reality.  Such great work is being done these days with technology that is still so new.  I wonder what Michelangelo would have been able to do with a Wacom tablet?  Thanks for sharing your awesome stuff, Shayne!

Skullboy Art

Skullboy in New Jersey showed us a pair of items that he created.

Fist Pump C says:

Jersey: that scary area between Philly and New York.  With the large number of Superfund sites in the state it is quite appropriate to cover the state with skulls.  Just teasing you, I know your are from Jersey so you can take it.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.

[BONUS] Paint by Numbers Skull In-Use

Anne Williams Gilardi of Pompton Lakes, NJ, used Noah's 167. Skull By Numbers to paint this skull.

This is a great painting! This is probably one of hardest available projects. I haven't see many people attempt it, so congrats to Anne for completing it well!

We love seeing what people create using our available Free Stuff. If you make something using something from the Free Stuff section of Skull-A-Day, please submit it to us! We'd love to share it!

Anatomical Skull Drawing

Manar from Lebanon, "drew this a while back for my sister's art project".

I always admire the anatomical skull artwork that comes into our submissions box. This one is particularly eye catching, because it's very well done. Manar is a very nice sister to do this for her sister. I hope the rest of the art project was as amazing as this is!

Stitched Skulls

Aj / Melia in the Colorado Rockies shared a pair of cross-stitched skulls that she created.  The first is a traditional sugar skull pattern and the second is a creation celebrating the winter solstice.

Diagonal C says:

I find cross-stitch to be a fascinating medium to create with.  The skill of using one repeating figure in different positions truly mesmerizes me in to looking at objects in a different perspective.  Thank you for sharing your creations with us.

Skull "Scope" Logo

Mark Redondo is a graphic designer from Sacramento, Ca who is currently working full-time for 5.11 Tactical.  He used the company's scope logo to create this "scope skull".

That is a good motto to have in life, and you can remember it more often with this.  Mark has more stuff to scope out here.  Thanks for keeping us in your sights, Mark!

Thomas' Trio of Skulls

Thomas Maguin is a French skull making artist here to show us his diversity with this trio of skulls.

“It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength."

True words spoken by someone you know.  Diversity teaches us to appreciate all things, and I appreciate you sharing yours with us, Thomas.  Thanks!

Sugar Skull Bunny

Dawn Donut told us: "I created some Easter coloring pages. That is if you like your Easter
sprinkled with sugar skulls."  There are more styles available to color HERE.

Hop-Along C says:

It certainly does not feel like spring has arrived in many parts of the country, but hopefully a weekend full of brightly colored eggs and sugar skull bunnies can make for brighter days ahead.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Skull Makeup Trio

Crystal Overland of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a makeup artist. She created these skull makeup looks.

We get a variety of skull makeup submissions from various talented artists, but rarely from an artist that specializes in makeup. I like seeing the different skulls that Crystal created. The soft shading of the two anatomical skulls add to their eeriness. The last one is modeled after a Dia de los Muertos sugar skull. It still has some soft shading, but the opaque paints help define the influence. You can see more of Crystal's work on her website and Facebook page.
