Skull and Flowers Bag

Holly Davis, submitted a bag with an interesting request for you all to participate for. She explains, "I run a UK based online company Holly and Ruby and I make handbags, of many designs, some of which are skulls. All of our work is original and our bags are handmade, one-off pieces. I am currently running a competition in which visitors to the site can win a skull bag (made by Holly and Ruby) by naming the bag and writing a short character description. I am currently a little skull-obsessed and I am working on other skull bags! The closing date for the competition is October 31, 2011 I welcome entrants from all over the world as I can post international. Details of the competition can be found on their blog, Holly and Ruby.

I've loved embroidery since the 1st time I held a needle and thread in my hands and stitched into fabric. This bag is exceptional. The details are amazing. There is a combination of machine and hand embroidery that highlight the details of the bag. If you would like to win this one of a kind bag, don't forget to enter the contest by Holly and Ruby.

“Skull-N-Smoke”

Mike Johnson from Stockton, UT shared with us a sketch titled “Skull-N-Smoke” that he drew.

Mirrors C says:

This is a wonderful eerie piece you have created. I truly enjoy the lightness and flowing nature of this. This is also such a thought provoking piece in that the material that you are suggesting created this skull can be dangerous in many ways. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

"Peachey" Bright Skull

Tattoo artist and painter Vinnie Peachey is here to show off his brilliant use of colors in this skull painting.

I love it when the images seem to literally POP off of the screen. I like your ink works as well, Vinnie. The color work is bright enough to notice from a block away, and there's no shortage of skulls in your portfolio. There's plenty more to see at Vinnie's site so be sure to check it out....only if you like great art! Thanks, Vinnie!

Fishing Skeleton

Mike Johnson, an artist from Utah, submitted this piece. He explains, "I've always been drawn to skulls even as a kid. I have made many sculptures, drawings, and miscellaneous art, here is one I thought you might enjoy. It is a shadow box it measures 14" X 17" the street lamp has an LED light it looks cool at night with the light on."

With the LED light on

Close up of human skeleton

The attention to detail is what makes this piece very interesting. I like that it's done in black, white and grey. It's adds to the late night fishing theme. The use of an LED light in the dock light is very smart and adds another eerie quality to the piece.

Unstuck: Sneek Preview!

I'm very excited to finally give you a first look at my new book Unstuck: 52 Ways to Get (and Keep) Your Creativity Flowing at Home, at Work & in Your Studio!

It's coming out in November from Voyageur Press who also published 365: A Daily Creativity Journal. The format is very similar to 365, but in Unstuck it's all about getting an immediate creative jolt from doing one of 52 short projects that are arranged by time commitment from 30 seconds to several hours.
And it's designed to be used by everyone from artists to professionals, from teachers to young people.

The book also features interviews with a dozen of inspiring people and how they deal with their own roadblocks to creativity.

In addition there are sidebars with even more projects to get your creative wheels turning.

And as with 365, Unstuck includes plenty of blank space to use as you see fit.

The book will be in stores officially on November 15th. As always I recommend supporting your local independent bookstore if you still have one, but if not you can also pre-order at Powells, Amazon.com, Qbookshop, Barnes & Noble, and Chapters/Indigo.

Too see even more of the book, check out the extensive preview HERE.

And I'll keep you updated as the release date gets closer and as book signing events are announced.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.15

If you suffer from cartilogenophobia, today’s simulacra are just for you since they are found in things that others may fear.

First up is our own Skullmaster who took a break from his day to show us arachnophobia. He told us that: “This spooky guy was right outside my door!”

Next Kris from Dullstroom, South Africa shows off pyrophobia with a Skull fire submission.

Last for the day is 8Skullz from Nevada who demonstrates agoraphobia or maybe claustrophobia with this window lock they found in a Las Vegas Hospital which might also make this Nosocomephobia.

Room 101 C says:

Thank you all for sharing your wonderful simulacra with us. Hopefully you have all found a safe peaceful place to confront your other fears, and in case you need some help naming your fears check out this list HERE.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

Super Vintage Skull Saturday

Greetings, skull lovers! Let me be the first to wish you a Happy & Healthy 09/10/11. This may not make sense to those of you who put the day first, but I know we have super smart readers who can figure it out.

These killer old school skulls come from Johann Gosselet. No descriptions were given in the submission email, but these are all so cool that I can't let them be presented with some commentary(especially since I couldn't post them all).

We'll start by celebrating the 100th anniversary for the 1911 recipient of the
"Best Beard In The Cemetery" Award.

This has to be an illustration of a truly epic tale of skulls, love, & WAR!
Maybe "The"Romantic Crusades of the Neurocranium".

We all know that clowns and skulls are both creepy so
this is really making me freak out right now.

A speed freak until the end, Reginald Knievel, would begin a
family tradition that would last for generations.

A sacrifice made in the name of discovery.
A pioneer executed by exploration.

I had to save the best for last, or at least a favorite of most of us male types. Who wouldn't wanna play some strip poker with these ladies? Warning though, they have some SERIOUS poker faces.

Thanks for the retro start to our weekend, Johann. I really enjoy the historic and antique look of your works. They all have such character unique to themselves, but still look wonderful as a collection. These just prove the fact that "Old school rules!"

[Flashback Friday] 5.14- Teddy Bear Skull

Welcome to another addition of Flashback Friday.** This year the guest editors, Citizen Agent, Azurafae, and myself, Tatman, are taking turns reflecting on 17 of our personal favorite skulls from the previous four years of postings. So please join us as we visit the archives and add our additional commentary on some of the original pieces.

Teddy Bear Skull

Stephanie Metz is the creator of this lovable little critter. Her needle felted works are amazing and deserve another look from our readers. There's a whole lot more to check out on her Teddy Bear Natural History page. The details to her works are amazing and even the Skull Master was so impressed that he didn't attempt to make one of his own during the 1.0 year. Consider me equally impressed with the warm and fuzzy teddy bear skulls as well as all of your work, Stephanie.

**Flashback Friday was a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week during year 3.0 The Skullmaster posted the original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3.0, all 52 can be found here.

Black Skull

Artist Jonathan Morgan currently in London,UK completing his MFA showed off a piece he did as an undergrad using Resin, Steel, Plywood & Synthetic Rubber Coating.

Good Year C says:

I am in awe by this piece. I like how you have created this hovering skull. The coating you use makes it still appear to be wet with what one could imagine to be oil. It makes me think about all the destruction that oil causes every year from the prevalent spills that impact our ecosystems to the more residual destruction of the battles that are fought over the rights to control it. Thank you for sharing this work with us.

Skull Flag

Deborah Carpenter said, "My husband requested a skull flag for the bike rack. I crocheted this one for him."

This is a fantastic flag. Reminds me of the one my great aunt made and put towards the back of her garage. She used it as a guide for backing up, so she wouldn't hit her work table. Didn't always work, but it did sometimes. Also reminds me of flags on bikes, so you can see them from a distance...or have a flag wave around as you ride. Makes me want to be a kid again.
